Up in Norther BC, we used to start our diesels in the winter using propane. Propane is very compression friendly. Also works like nitrous for a diesel. Make sure to add a water/ethanol mix with it, to keep the exhaust temps down.

"Don't" is definitely too firm a statement. It absolutely CAN, but that does not mean it always will. Caution is still advisable. Exactly as Josh said, too much or used improperly it can cause damage. Intake heater grids or combustion intake heaters are a recipe for the intake tract burning with improper ether usage. Blown apart filter housings were real common on 7.3 Powerstrokes, particularly the OBS versions, back up in NoCo. The baby intake heater coil could light it and blow back. All of that being said- I've used ether on a wide variety of diesels with zero negative issues. Just be alert to the possible risks and work around them. Easy enough.

The modern "flaming rag" is to bore a hole in the metal intake manifold, tap it and screw in a Thermostart "Flame heater"... that uses 12VDC to heat a coil of wire and open a small built in valve to drip diesel onto it and cause a flame in the intake,,,, This is all controlled by a push button on the dash... button off after engine starts and the coil turns off and the little valve closes.... ready for the next start... I used to be a member of a small Volunteer Fire Dept in Upstate NY, and they used to have a 1974 Dodge C 900 Pumper that had a 555 Cummins V8 Engine. The easiest way to get that Triple Nickel Engine to start was to give the intake a couple short blasts of ether. I fixed this issue temporarily by starting, and running the truck once a week for about 30 minutes. Some of the older Members didn't like this, and told me that it was not fixing the issue, but, in reality, it was fixing the issue, because it was keeping the batteries fully charged, but long story short, they made me stop running the truck on a weekly basis, and within a few short days of not being started and ran, they ended up having to go back to using ether to get the truck started. I noticed this, and went back to running the truck for 30 minutes on a weekly basis. We had a call come in one day for that particular truck, and I warned the incoming driver that the engine was already hot from having just been shut down, and that he would not have to use ether to get it started. He ignored me, and gave the intake 3 long shots of ether, turned the engine over, and blew it up.

Several years ago (before we had field service) a customer called in because his motor home ran out of fuel. He was trying to save $0.05 cents by getting to another station. He talked our supervisor in sending a tech out to get it running. The tech called back and said "The engine blew up". After arguing back and forth, the boss asked "How do you know it's blown up?" Which the tech replied back, "The push rods are sticking through the valve covers". The tech was labeled the "Either Bunny" for awhile. Needless to say the motor home was towed in, engine & trans dropped down to the floor. Motor home lifted up and we pulled the engine out and rebuilt it. The joys of saving a nickel a gallon.

Good video if someone can learn from it. I’ve been trying to get the non English speaking so the say mechanics to stop using it but no luck Someday when the blow the intake off the engine they might listen.

We'd usually see at least 1 7.3 Powerstroke come in with a popped filter housing every cold snap back in Northern Colorado. My favorite though was the Duramax that spun to the moon and destroyed its valvetrain. "No, we didn't use ether!" The distinct odor coming from your intake tract and 2 empty cans under-hood says otherwise.

A diesel fires right after commencement of fuel injection. You spray either in it and it fires pretty much uncontrolled (way early) that is severe detonation. That is why you hear all that banging when those idiots are doing cold start videos and spraying tons of either. It's way hard on engine components. Do things right and preheat, block heater, glow plugs in an IDI, manifold heater, whatever. I've torn down lots of engines from guys that love either, broken rings, upper ring land broken off the top of the piston, etc. All the detonation is hard on stuff

Can't forget the banana shaped connecting rods I've seen alot o those there is a right way and a wrong way to use ether... Light spray while cranking over the air cleaner as that slows the dispersion combined with disabling the glow plugs/grid heater while using the ether... It's always better to crank the engine more than to use too much ether as the cranking actually will warm the engine up via air compression in the cylinders so that the light ether can be effective without dealing damage.

Sounds like you have fuel draining back out of the injection system. Fit a cheap knock off Facet style click click 12VDC fuel pump inline between the fuel tank and the fuel filters. Operate the pump with a momentary on (push style) switch on the dash... and fire up the pump to run for 15 seconds BEFORE you hit the starter switch....and until the engine runs. This momentary switch can also be used by a helper while you bleed any and all bleed valves all the way to the injectors... positive fuel pressure at the push of a button after a filter change etc. When the engine's own lift/injection pump sucks up fuel it just sucks it through the inline pump without restriction even while the Facet is not running... If the engine needs a lift pump (having broken down on the job) the Facet pump can get you home so to speak... or allow you to keep working until you get the lift pump replaced. See marty T Yt channel I bought the cheapest loader in New Zealand what could possibly go wrong... he also deals with refitting a Thermostart Intake Flamer heater...you might like that as an alternative to ether??? @@user-ul7jb8cl7g

Unless you’re in subzero temperatures, a diesel that requires ether to start has a fuel system issue. Or the compression is so low it can’t fire. I worked at a place called Evans Equipment for 20 years saw over 1000 diesel trucks come through there. Every single one that required ether to start, was found to have some sort of fuel system issue. We would fix those things because nothing would impress a customer more than a big diesel engine, starting on a 10° day without any ether. I watched my bosses brother spray half a can of ether into the forklift to start it. That little Perkins engine blew the rings out of three cylinders straight out the exhaust pipe.

Cans of carby cleaner are usually cheaper and works well also, WD40 or any spray lube generally works and is a lot softer on everything or a little petrol on a rag draped over/near the air intake.

Never knew (hey I am a gas-engine guy) that it is possible to load one up so full of ether that the starter can't crank it AT ALL. Taking the injectors out and cranking it, changing oil and usually the starter and battery - aaand: "good as new" !

I've got an 86 6.2 Detroit that will lock up if you micro bump a can of ether. If I disconnect the glow plugs, it will kind of work. It broke the starter once, and the ring gear another time, so I don't fool with ether anymore. Now I just fix the actual problem. Usually fuel issue.

No glow plugs or grid heaters or turbo on those girls back then. -20C and gotta clean the lane of snow, you need a boosting vehicle or the battery charger and a snort of starting fluid to get it to go. Doesnt need it when warm just when cold as balls. Even got the factory manual too telling how to use it. Almost 50 year old motor, still factory sealed. Probably could use a total rebuild but aint got the time or money. Just gonna use that ether as the manufacturer recommends!

Well, timing is critical for any engine, and diesels especially. Your ECM or injection pump takes care of timing, it injects fuel in precise moment. When using starting fluid, it may (and will) ignite at any random moment, causing knocks and detonation. It may (and will) damage Your engine over time...

The places I've worked at don't let you use ether underground, due to the potential hazard of it leaking, accumulating in low areas and exploding (same as gasoline and propane). On the other hand there is a lot of underground equipment with multi colored air intakes, spray paint works too.

I took a pete into a truck stop to get serviced since I was way over due. It had an isx 15 in it. The prime pump was bad but the o ly time it wS an issue was when the filters were changed. I carried a 12v aux pump like found in most shops for priming and let them know I had it and if they didn't have one they could use it.they told me they won't use customer tools and they will get it done. I came back a couple hours later and they were using starting fluid to prime it. I could hear it from the other end of the building. There were 4 empty cans on the ground and were running it on the 5th when I came into the shop. ended up having to rebuild motor. And I was going to have it sold the next week. I had 2 scored and 1 cracked liner. Was blowing white smoke within a couple of hours of leaving. I went in with an average of 8.4 mpg and by the end of the trip (900mi) I was lucky if I was getting 4mpg and a gal of coolant per day. I fought 5hem over it for awhile but they insisted starting fluid isn't t bad and it must have been like that when it came in... The only times I e used more than a quick k shot or 2 while. Ranking is when it was sub zero Temps and no jumper cables around or when pulling something that has been sitting in a field for a long time.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a factory that had a gigantic emergency Backup Diesel generator. The owner of this company put his fresh out of college Son in charge of the generator crew. It was the crews practice to fire off the diesel Monthly as is best practices. WELL, one month the diesel would not start. They Tried everything. The checked all there was to check. FINALLY, the bosses kid Calls the shop helper over gives him some $$ and tells him ‘Go find 2 of the biggest containers of ether you can find’. After a short time, this kid returns with 2 1gallon jugs of ether. The bosses kid climbs up on a ladder & pours the whole 2 gallons down the diesels throat. The crew was horrified. Everyone scattered looking for something to hide behind. The kid climbed down off the ladder, hit the start button & all that ether lit off. It created SO much pressure, the heads lifted off the block a bit, coolant shot out, then the head slammed back down onto the block & the diesel roared to life. !

I like either, The only argument I’ve heard that i can agree with is, If the starting fluid does not have any lubricants in it, then it would a solvent and possibly cause low/no lubrication in the combustion chamber, and then cause small cavitation in the cylinder walls, and with repeated use would then cause the cavitation to get bigger and bigger (even though we are talking about ten thousandths)

If we're talking about a worn engine that needs ether to start, and gets worse over time, whose only fix is a rebuild of the entire engine, I would call that "addicted to ether". A rebuild isn't a simple issue to just fix. It's a major repair.

Have been using ether in engines long enough to have used ether capsules, Detroit diesel used to have a cup with a large needle to pierce the capsules, this was obviously factory approved. More recently, was doing a PM service to a refrigeration unit, I found the air filter burnt and all of the filter media gone, it had been burnt and only the wire frame of the filter was left, I replaced the four glow plugs, the filter housing and air intake hose between the manifold and the housing, someone overdid the ether, it backfired and caught on fire, somehow the engine is running fine. I don’t know how.

Hi Josh, Marine diesel engine guy here in Ireland, with over 40 years pulling and dragging with diesels from 10 to 1000 hp on boats of different sizes. For what it's worth, my experience with ether ("easy start" over here) is that it's most definitely addictive. I cannot give a rational explanation for this, someone told me once that the small end bushing in the con-rods gets damaged ( wrist pin bearing?) ... I don't know, but I do know that using it more that a couple of times leads to addiction in a short timescale on most engines. Maybe some older American engines are designed in such a way as to tolerate it better, but I'm always going to strongly avoid it.

One thing that I feel should be covered on the topic of ether is spraying it before the engine is rotating this is the biggest cause of damage when using either and is far too common I myself am guilty of this. The problem with spraying before the engine rotates is it allows the ether to settle in whatever cylinder has an open intake valve and when you go to start it that ether is only acting on 1 or 2 cylinders and is creating excessive cylinder pressure and strips any lubrication on the upper cylinder wall, this in turn can lead to ring failure or worse.
