Back at it. Plan was for 2 videos a week when I went independent, but ended up working more this week than at Cat!!! Good times though. 3:04 glad I am not the only one who remembers the cool aid man
I wish you all the success in the world. Being a small business owner has never been more difficult than today BUT the only thing worse than failing at something is the regret that comes with never trying. 👍
This channel is getting much better. It's much more informative when you work on the engine while narrating
I can’t wait for that 45mph zone to be finished already! It feels like one of the longest lasting projects in all of ID/WA.
That is as bad as the removing the ECM on a Thomas EF, had to remove the starter and pull it down that way. Took most of the day to remove and then replace. Why can't they remote mount those ECM, better yet why can't they make something that last.
Great video Josh. Learning alot and entertainment. Thank you for the shout out. Happy my pics were on time. Love helping out the channel. So much different topics keeping things interesting. Cheers man. Support as always. 👍👊💪💪🚚💯
I like the variety, It will help people having these problems too. If you do the same things all the time there's nothing to learn. I'm excited for your new journey. I hope you keep as busy as you want to be.
Very rare an ECM fails that way. Remember FRC is higher than Rated Fuel Limit, Fuel position is equal to Rated Fuel Limit under full Load. If FRC is lower than Rated Fuel, you have a air problem. If Fuel position is one MM lower than Rated fuel you are in a fuel derate. Had one on the dyno, no codes active or logged. 15 psi boost on his gauge, 3 on ET. Had great HP on the dyno the day before. Went to replace the boost sensor and the five volt wire was broken on the harness at the sensor.

Yep very rare occurrence and that 5 volt supply that’s broken can short back to the ecm and fry that pin and lead you to believe it was a bad ecm . I’m not saying Josh is wrong by any means, just saying these types of fixes sometimes come back to haunt you.

@@jaywyatt7476 A short to long on any system can damage other components. I had one that I did and EUI click test, cylinder five was shorted. Found the EUI arm broke and was laying on top of the EUI solenoid. The driver kept running the truck, until it failed the driver in the ECM.
Just a note for some power issues... My 2007 Peterbilt started losing power...almost like the fuel was not getting to the engine soon enough and with enough pressure a C15 ACERT, after installing a new fuel pump, a FASS fuel system and many other sensors being installed. It turned out being the fuel pick up tube in the older fuel tank, Peterbilt dealer said the fuel tanks should be replaced every 7 -10 years due to many issues that happen with AGE...like our bodies... too much wear and tear on the tanks cause leaking and other problems. My tractor, a 379 started sucking air at 3/8 of a tank of fuel. which caused it to run out of fuel. After replacing the tank with a new one, 150 gallon, all of the power issues are resolved. Thank you Josh for the many informative videos and information that you have the knowledge of.
Big jobs are interesting for sure , but these small problems are more common in the life of an operating truck . By watching you trouble shoot and followed the quickest route gives me a better understanding of Cat systems .
Love to see you independent Josh! Hope you're doing well
Another great vid! Thanks for sharing my Koolaid man meme. I'm sure glad the ECU is way easier to get to on my Kodiak. Sterling really crammed a bunch of crap in there.

Oh yeeeah! Good stuff, that raised a smile all the way over here in France.
You are the man. Love your skill and the pride you put into your work.
Such beautiful country up there! Passed through there while on an 8,000 mile, 11 state motorcycle trip with my wife a couple of years back from So Cal. Also my brother lived on the Clark Fork river in Clark Fork. ✌🏽
There is more soul in your videos now, keep them coming please 💥
Nice find man. But remember check your short to grounds, open circuits and load test your wires before replacing ecm. I learned that on an accelerator pedal signal wire the hard way. I fried a couple ecms not realizing it was the sensor/module wires causing the ecm failure…..oops.
Wow! I will never complain about working on our Sterling with C7. It’s older so maybe why I’ve got more room to spare? Still has the crappy panels and failing fasteners not to mention crumbling dashboard. Made the old Ford L9000 3208 Vactor truck seem like an eternal tank.
Packaging nightmare. May as well be a cabover. I may have said less than good words doing that job.
Very generous on your comment regarding working on sterlings. Nice semi to drive but a nightmare to do any work on thing. ( never again will I work on Sterling trucks)
Glad to see you still enjoying turning wrenches.
I enjoy these videos because I used to do field work. I don’t need to see engine work every video. I enjoy the variety, keep up the good work!
Good to see you staying busy!...no doubt your skills are in demand. Wish I lived closer.
The new format is great!
Enjoying your videos .....hope that you succeed !!!!
You think those steel beams were long you missed all the wind turbine blades we moved from Lewiston up 95 thru coeur d'alene all the way to bonners ferry, across highway 2 through Montana back to Canada. 300 feet long! we moved 50 of them via that route! Just insane
G'day Josh, I feel your pain working on a Sterling. We still have one in service in the fleet I maintain. The plastics are horrible. Need a handfull of flat washers and long panel screws before you even start. The Freightliners are no better. Cheers from Down Under.
I'm loving the variety in this new setup. Also really cool seeing your journeys, not being from the US.
Very enjoyable video. Looking forward to the next engine repair video. Sam
Those vac trucks provide a nearly endless supply of mud for me and Larry to push downhill. Mostly Petes with Cummins though.
Worked at an International dealer for seven years , then Peterbilt for sixteen years ,quit and started my own business. Best decision I’ve ever made 9:54 9:54
I just enjoy watching the variety of your jobs, Josh. Heavy or light.
ECMs fail more often than people think. I did two this week. Often you will see weird symptoms that could have you chasing your tail. Some coworkers threw $50k in components at a 992 hydraulic complaint and it ended up being the ECM.
I'll never understand the location decision on some of those ECUs...all types of vehicles.
I work in a large integrated steel mill, over 500 acres and at least 20 contractors suck trucks on site at any time
Those pesky airlines blocking the way. I had the same problem with TWA😊😂
I had one do that and it was the oil pressure sensor. No code gauge in dash read, but the cat et showed no read when lap top was on it
Josh that Sterling look like in a possibility almost do anything too. Couldn’t get to anything. I’m sure the engineers that built it didn’t think about having to work on it. Do they ever?😂😂😂
Love these vids! Keep them coming!
That is crazy tight in that engine. Good video
Cool seeing the scenery as well! Keep it up bro!
Thanks for sharing your adventures
Another great video with good Explanations of everything. Thanks!
Hey Josh..been fixing Cats for 40 years..yes C-7 could have various issues other than injectors..seen dropped valves, failed cam followers, loose electrical connectors.injector holdfown bolts etc. Best to check under valve cover...
Man, Idaho truly has some beautiful scenery.

It certainly does
I like the new way things are going on your channel! Mixing it up.
Thanks for the video Josh.
Thanks!
Josh I enjoy the variety of things you do so keep it up. I drove many service vans like yours, I liked having a working door in the cage, got use to go through it on windy cold days to get things set up so I did not need to stand outside of the van reaching for things and getting wind up my back. Stay safe and healthy. Mobile service you will pile up a lot of miles, make sure you have a good camera on the front and back for when someone hits your van.
I pulled the starter and dropped mine through the bottom, after I had pulled it before out the top.
And that my friends are why I take my dozers to mechanics, I don't have the patience.
Always enjoy your videos
Your channel is much improved. I wish you success. Alex
Woot! Nice work my man.
Great job !
A friend of mine has a 3406E 6TS engine in his Peterbuilt. I did an in chassis 11 years ago and it was just shy of a million then. Just lost the #6 rod bearing and scored the crank all up. The other rod bearings actually looked great with very little copper showing except for the grooves from metal from the failed bearing. Never had a bad oil sample, Cat filters always with Shell Rotella. Last oil change was April 19. Just 900,000 miles since the in chassis. We were going to do a bearing roll in in July.
Pulling an ECM in 30 degree weather, dam near killed me watching it
My father has five 2006 ISX Cummins engines, they love to do a silent derate, once dad drove a truck for over a month before it came back to life, and these newer engines has a silent AI, they self tune to your driving habits, god bless you guys and stay strong
Nice 😊
Fantastic Josh 👍🏻🏴
I work for a water district and we have a few of those vacuum trucks, mostly Freightliner or Kenworth from what I remember. All CNG Cummins engines due to state regs. I always feel bad for the heavy truck shop we send them to when they have big problems that we can't handle in our shop.
Today I’m working on nothing, my quail are hatching so I’m just watching and waiting
I have a service truck with the 6 Oh no powerstroke. I built the engine so mechanically I have never had an issue since but recently chased a VERY similar issue. Changed the ficm and ecm at the same time recently and fixed it as well. Sucks to struggle on some of these electronic issues and know it almost has to be but you can't have a smoking gun before pulling that trigger on the parts cannon.
👍👍‼️. Oh and Garrets truck looks great.
At one of my old jobs we had a little Isuzu cabover that another employee was driving, he had no power on the highway and they replaced everything trying to fix it, turbo injectors etc, one day we picked it up from the mechanic and I heard a whistle behind me in the passenger seat I looked behind me and the air intake was collapsing, it turned out the air filter was totally plugged, literally nobody thought to check it
While I enjoy the engine teardowns, I'm just glad that you've found (hopefully) enough work to keep you employed at a level that meets your needs. Of course, seeing the scenery of my neighbor state is always a good thing (I do a lot of summer motorcycle rides in those areas just because of the scenery).
Them looked like our trucks, we have built more then a few bridges for idaho this year.
Carry a VAL6 heater ( 50,000 BTU ) and a small Honda generator in your service truck ! Would like to see your service truck set up on a video !
I wished I knew where your shop is I have a 2007 International 9400i with a C-15 Cat that need some work done on the motor

I suspect that some work with your favorite search engine will get you the general area (North Idaho) and contact info.
Hope you have good luck on your own
There is a reason i have an extended hood 379. I don't want to tear the truck half apart just to work on something simple
All this driving hopefully you are billing drive time and mileage man
We have a lot of good cat mechanics go on their own at our cat dealership too
Love the goat so funny!!!
Love that goat screaming thing 😂
Steerable trailers help move things that long
Probably easier to pull the cab!😂😂
On those sterlings they have a doghouse you can remove alot of times to gain more access to that area of the engine
We still have about 10 sterlings in our fleet and they are just absolutely miserable trucks. Especially anything interior wise with the horribly brittle plastic. Did not know they came with cats though
the Kootaneys some of the most beautiful country on the planet
The ecm probably had a failed solder point which is very common. i repair many modules myself.
An old guy once told me, "in the past, a mechanic once got caught sleeping with an engineer's wife and everything that followed has been payback".
I drove a dumpster truck with a similar set up and I think the ecm was having issues like this if I remember right
Diagnostic is way more interesting than an overhaul.
On my sterling i got to the ecm through the doghouse fairly easily
I would like you to finish the cylinder.

Me too, I see it in the shop and cry every time LoL
Well, Sterling is just a Ford after all...!!! I'm surprised they're not putting EcoBoost's in the new ones...!!!
i dont think you can say your introduction line any faster bro 😂😂
No wonder I’m always stuck behind those vac trucks, they only have a C-7 and they are heavy
We have the 1998 Ford Louisville with the 3406E in it. Actually has more room under hood than the 2005 sterling with the Mercedes mbe 4000. Sterling shouldn’t have shortened the hood and crammed things more. We also have a 2008 freightliner M2, that’s even worse than the sterling. Small hood with a two turbo C13 in it. The people that built these trucks don’t have proper engineering skills. They pat themselves on the back for a job well done at getting every complicated part to fit which buries the engine.
Imagine the intake temps with that thing blocking the intercooler. Poor bloody thing.
I hack the same truck with a c13 in it. Im feeling your pain!
welcome to the life of a mobile mechanic ( tech )
🙌
Tell those guys to keep their belts tight😂😂
Failing Capacitor in ECM ? Symptoms are pointing in that direction..
Ahh ...you make it look easey....last mechanic job i had boss wanted me to replace head gasget on a Ford with half the engine in the cab....when i told him it might take awhile because i basically had to disassemble the truck he didn't believe me
Enjoy your evening with all your family around you, Adept Ape Can't wait for the next video Carry a bottle of water in your vehicle 👍 INTVITIVE, Adept Ape From Nick Ayivor from London England UK 🇬🇧 ⏰️ 23:06PM Good Evening
