    Hello Josh. May i ask you a question? Took my truck from shop after they did rebuild with Platinum rebuild kit on my C12 (2KS). My oil pressure is approximately 37-39psi on 1500 rpm, is it normal? Can I use Lucas to improve breaking-in? Thanks in advance.

    A local construction company had a fleet of Kenworths with the first 3176 engines. They hauled trash to their landfill in special built semi trailers. They had so many issues. CAT did free rebuilds on almost all of them. I think some got 2 free rebuilds. CAT ended up putting brand new engines in several of them. This company ran 100% CAT equipment, so they needed to keep them happy. The 3208 startled as a collaborative effort between Ford and CAT. They were designated as an 1160 and were painted Ford blue. They were later painted yellow, and I think I have seen a few painted white.

    I bought a new KW in 1990 with a 3176, after most of the sensors failed in the first 6 months i had few problems after that. One thing I watched carefully was the coolant makeup due to the combination of aluminum and cast iron in the bloke...I saw many others have devastating problems because of the lack of maintenance of the coolant. All in all i got good service and excellent fuel mileage from this engine. My next two Cats were the venerable 3406-E 550's and thats a success story all in its own. Retired now and given the crap thats out there these days im not missing the business one bit.

    I worked for a company in the 1990s which had a fleet of Kenworths. The dealership had convinced them into buying a T-450 tractor with a 3176E and nine speed. It was a short wheel base twin screw tractor. The only thing they liked about it was the fuel mileage. Driving it took getting used to as it seemed to have a delay between the hot foot and ECM. Even the Jake seemed delayed. It actually pulled really well. But it also had a top speed of 63 mph @1950. One day it caught fire on I95. The cooling fan clutch malfunctioned and ignited the plastic fan ablaze. I was told that i should have let the truck burn to the ground. White it was in the shop being repaired,they ordered a T800 with a 3406 E. I always have thought that the 450 was speced poorly for the application we were using it for. The 3176 was at least as reliable as the earlier N14 electronic wise in my opinion. I don't remember it just shutting down on us for no reason. It always started even in the dead of winter. If i remember right it was getting nine mpg average.

    Cat ran that engine in quite a few of their machines like graders and excavators…I ran them a lot and don’t really remember having much trouble with them but as with pretty much all cat engines, they seemed to work better and were more reliable in construction/industrial environments!..even the 3208’s worked great in the equipment and marine applications…not so much in the trucks…I started in the business in the mid 90’s so I started work at a time when all these engines converged and I could see how they all performed in comparison to each other…to this day I would have to say the 3306 was probably the best for its time and was a very capable engine…only issue I would say about it was it was hard on fuel…when the C9 came out, it pretty much blew the old 3306 and 3176 out of the water in terms of performance and fuel efficiency!..cheers

    My only experience with the 3176 is when a truck had pulled in with a miss. We hooked the computer to it and it blamed cylinder one. Turns out there were no issues with that cylinder, but it was still missing. I asked my foreman "what if it's reading the cylinders backwards and it's really number six?" He agreed, and after further diagnosis it was confirmed to be number six.

    If it had more time in the development stage, customers would have liked it more. By the time the 3176B (9CK) came out, the 2YG and 7LG, had hurt the engines reputation.

    I worked in a Fleet environment in The late 90s early 2000s they had a good amount of these engines , We had okay, success. We were a light load Fleet. We did have some fuel leakage from the ECM's on the earlier models And occasionally the aluminum spacer plate would create some problems, The last time I put hands-on one internally was probably around 2008 I can't believe there's many left on the road.

    I also worked on the 3176 when it first came out. They were never meant to be used as over the road long haul. They were designed to be used in vocational applications to replace the 3306 and 3208. The 3176 was lighter by weight and could have more horsepower. The 3208 was always a throw away engine that rarely ever lasted into high mileage or hours. Customers always tried to use the 3176 like a baby 3406. That NEVER worked out well. We were always getting updates by mail weekly. We also would have meetings about every two or three months at the Cat dealership by satellite with Cat Headquarters 3406E and 3176 engineering teams. I would walk away with a stack of recalls and diagrams. Biggest problems I had was they had a aluminum spacer block between the block and cylinder head. The spacer block could not handle the influx temperatures between metals at start up and cool down. Head gasket nightmare!! Also the spacer block would get pitted due to incorrect coolant DCA mix. You had to remove the spacer block to replace the injector cups. Head bolts/block thread recall was a nightmare. I believe they were first all metric bolt/ thread engine released by CAT. I remember replacing flywheel housings due to customers trying to use the truck for the wrong application. So much for saving weight. I think there was a aftermarket company that made steel housings. You had to be extremely careful when removing the fuel lines off the ECM. If they broke you would half to replace ECM and swap the PM, re calibrate engine sensors add customer parameters. I recall replacing and installing new updated chips in the ECAP about once a month. LOL just found my master 7LG shop rebuild manual. Think I may have to go back into therapy after reliving these nightmares LOL. Well at least they didn't have a PEEC system.

    At the time the 3176 was a new engine, I was a driver for a fleet that had lots of them. Somewhere near 1988 or 89. They were an enjoyable engine to drive. The torque was so good the engine felt strong for it's horsepower rating and ran smooth. The cat engine was always one that tried to maintain RPM base on foot pedal position, where a cummins you would have to push the pedal down to get it to work harder. So as a driver it was a different experience to keep you foot pedal in the same position, and the engine would ramp itself up to use more power when needed. Somewhat like an electronic cruise control. They were nice engines when new, but we understood them to be a non-rebuildable engine from the start. That feature that did not allow an overhaul, caused these engines to leave the marketplace just as quickly as they were introduced. After these trucks got 7-800,000 miles, they started being parking lot queens outside the shop. When they were used up, they were gone. It was a fun engine to drive though.

    Heck of a learning curve going to electronic controlled engines..Many early engines were not good.. The 3406 PEEC in a Freightliner was a disaster..but in a K W or Pete worked much better..wiring problems? The 3306 Cat was a fanrastic engine. Lasted forever and had very good power for a small two valve engine 627E scrapers had them and they did a heck if a job

    Josh I have one of these in a 96 kenworth t800, it's been a great engine! It's rated at 365hp. It's backed with a 10 speed with 4.11 gears. I would have to say it's not big on power but, totally reliable, it's approaching 800k and still going strong! When it does fail, I would like to replace with a C12 since it appears the architecture is the same. I have another truck with a C12 set at 435hp that is really strong so I think that would be the best choice!

    I do enjoy these engine background videos. I've never owned a 3176 but looked at a few vehicles that did have them and considered it. In aviation we have the saying "Never fly the A-model of anything". Usually the designs are fine, but whenever you have something that is the first days of a new technology with a lot of more "revolutionary" features, some problems are generally going to come with it. Now I own a DD 12.7L Series 60 (DDEC IV) and while I wish it was a C-15, it's pretty good. It's interesting comparing the thoughts from two mechanics who worked on 3176s, both when they were brand new and then midway through the life cycle. I've found that a lot of times this sort of bipolar view happens. I used to work on Jaguar V12s, commonly known as notorious problem engines. However I was working on them when they were in the range of around 7-25 years old, well out of production. I worked on probably around 50 of the things and owned several myself, putting 30,000 miles on the one in my first car during my freshman year in college. I found the things overall very reliable if you knew how to work on them and what they needed. In general, new designs take these first few years to get the kinks worked out and often the second owners have a better time with them than the first ones. Hope to see more wrenching videos again soon, but I do enjoy ones on engine details as well. As an engineer who used to do engines for a living (both piston and turbine) I'm a bit of an engine guy.

    I drove several trucks that had 3176's. Most with 13sp, some with 8LL. The only repetitive problem that I recall, were failed injectors, either the tip would break off, or the entire injector would fail. We had one in a WhiteGMCVolvo, it suffered a fuel prime issue, and on a bad day if you got into heavy traffic, you needed a helper to jump out, open the hood, prime it with the hand primer, slam down the hood while you kept the revs up, and take off again. If the revs fell off, she'd suck air. Anyways, no, they were not BIG power, but for the most part, were pretty reliable, save for injector issues.

    Those are the ones that you would see holes in the liners so that's when coolant filters and the DCA came to be. Now because of the different technology it's something that never happens anymore because of it. I'm sure that there are still the odd one where you can see cavitation in the liners but no where near the way it was. Again ty for the good channel I really enjoy it 👍🇨🇦🔧

    Had mixed luck - Had the fuel leaking ecm issue on one, had a 3196 in an 85E that failed due to oil ingestion. after a turbo failure at 1500 hrs, a 75c that had 8000 hrs before traded with no issues, and an A and a B that ran went over 500k with no issues. Loved the reliability of the 3306 but at 300 hp were under powered for my liking unless used in a more vocational application. Correct me if I am wrong anybody but when I went through tech school in the 90's I seem to recall that there was an intention of being able to turn around an in frame OH in a faster time by exchanging out the spacer as a unit. Failed on that dream. Sounds like I was very fortunate.

    My entire background is marine engines, and 90 percent pleasurecraft, as in the high horsepower ratings- the 3196 was the gateway to the mechanical electronic unit injected engines- the 3196/C12/3412E etc. Now, the old 3300 series was reliable, BUT in yacht generator applications they were dirty and smoky. Nobody wants black soot all over the pristine white yacht or the neighboring pristine white yacht. Lots of "fixes" like specially drilled pistons, catalytic heaters on the mufflers etc, the electronic injection took care of lots of that! The 3208 was great in a 375 horse app but the 425/435 had this giant aftercooler (afterthought?) I HATED. JUNK! I am SO GLAD they are now rare and OUT OF WARRANTY so I don't deal with that crap anymore. :)

    We've had two 3176 engines for around 20 years. One is in a Cat 75C Challenger, the other in a 375 Peterbilt. Both 1994 models but there are some differences. The Challenger 75C (An Ag tractor) was made with the much larger ECM than the truck. Reliability of the engine in the truck has not been good. We had a cam follower fail and had to pay the local cat dealer to replace cam, spacer deck and related parts. They had the truck 3 months. Two of the brand new cat replacement spacer decks were warped out of spec on arrival to the dealer. Apparently they were very hard to get 10 years ago. I'm guessing there not even supported now. The 75C has been reliable but learned a couple weeks ago that the ECM is leaking. I'm not sure what we're going to do. Between the ECM and labor to reflash I'll probably have over 5K in it.

    The first company I ever drove for had a boat load of KW’s and FreightShakers with those little popcorn engines. They were literally giving them away to the drivers. I opted to not participate but if my memory serves me they were 5yo trucks and if you agreed to drive it for 2 years they’d had you the title. I had a buddy that did and they were so desperate to get them out of the fleet they weren’t even holding the guys to two years. He got his title just over a year in and he said CAT had just rebuilt it. I never heard exactly why they were just giving them away but I always assumed it was because they had zero trade value so why not get some recruiting value out of the trucks.

    The 1990 T450 I drive has a 3176, the engine has well over 1.5 million kilometers. Its not big on power, it pulls like a Cat engine should. Its good on fuel. The jake isn't very strong. The engine had the computer replaced it took 3 months to get one.

    The leasing company that I worked for bought 100 1990 Internation 9400 day cabs with the 3176 in them. The majority of them were dumping coolant into the oil before they even got put in service and Cat was denying warranty on them. Not a good showing for us.

    I drove a truck with a 3176 in 2019 until california banned it It was rated @350 hp and 1350 ft lbs iirc. It was a miserable engine. It wouldnt pull any hill with an empty flatbed. Theres no way it put down that kind of power. I had a 1962 pete with an old 280 Cummins with 780 ft lbs that would run circles around the 3176.

    I ran a 3176 that ran decent. But the 9 speed paired with it was pathetic. Especially hauling sugar beets. High gear was useless. I just let it buck 2300 rpm in 8th and held my foot to the floor. All in all I didn’t mind it. It was just gutless and would not fire off without ether. Deffinetly would prefer a 3406 but it wasn’t too bad

  • @johngoldsmith6629

    @johngoldsmith6629

    It would be close to what Cat has. Your 9CK has a forty pin ECM. C10 or C12 is a seventy pin. Cat makes a harness to adapt to the newer engine, or you can make one. Also your old engine the fuel supply is at the rear. The newer engine is at the front. Intake, exhaust piping and radiator hoses might need some work. Go to your Cat dealer and get this document, REHS0416.

    I am having a hard miss when the engine is up to temp. I removed valve covers to troubleshoot injectors and discovered mayonnaise and unmixed coolant. We water pump is currently leaking so I am going to pull oil pan and pressurize to see if it’s the water pump but I don’t think this would cause the miss. But I don’t want to put new injectors in something contaminated

    We have a Challenger tractor with the B version of the 3176. At 8K hours it is still going strong. From the sounds of this, I hope it hangs in there for another decade to wear the tractor out. Best tractor we have ever had on the farm by far to date. Would love to try the truck program for the 3176 in this tractor!

    Reason it lives, is a tractor, like a marine engine. Start it, after it warms, set the power level, and it lives. Vary the throttle, like a truck, and YMWV.

    Had a customer ( a logger) who had a 3176 , it broke a head if I remember correctly, it’s been 20 plus years ago , we couldn’t find a head , so made a c12 head I believe , fit it , used several parts between the 2 I believe I used the 3176 injectors, really cant remember. Any way I made it run, customer came back to my shop and said I’m not sure what all you did , but there’s nothing out here that will out pull my truck!, no one can out run me !! I said well good but hold on sooner or later there’s going to be a big boom probably, it lasted 2 years I’m guessing around 100,000 miles. And he scraped the truck after that..

    Can anybody explain what FTS and what FLS settings are?

  • @johngoldsmith6629

    @johngoldsmith6629

    2 ай бұрын

    FLS = Full Load Setting or "intercept". It is the HP curve from TEL "Top Engine limit" to rated HP. FTS = Full Torque Setting or "slope". It is the HP curve from Rated HP, RPM to Peak Torque, RPM. So when I test a Cat truck engine on the dyno and do what is called a PAR run. One of the main measurements is fuel rate reading measured in GPH. HP = Fuel rate (GPH) x density (Weight of one gallon of diesel fuel in that tank) divided by BSFC ( Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). So if the fuel rate is low, 0.5 GPH or less on readings at 1800 & 1200 RPM's, I can go online at Cat and enter the info and make an adjustment back to factory setting. If over 0.5 GPH, I can send it to the factory and they can issue new FLS/FTS numbers. On certain engines, usually 475 HP and under, Cat will allow what is called a fuel MAX out. For an extra fee (around $100.00) Cat will put the GPH at max tolerance. If the EUI's are worn, sometimes you might not get a full fuel max out.

  • @AdeptApe

    The 3176 and 3196 were essentially the same other than the 3176 was a 10L truck engine and the 3196 was a 12L equipment engine. The C12 a later version of the 3176 where the block was redesigned and it's a 12 liter engine.

    You can get a ECM, two types. The older ones are very expensive and you have to calibrate the speed timing sensor with a ECAP and timing indicator group. The newer ones are more friendly to work with.
