    When I was a pup, learning at Dad's side and asking 20 questions, my first "E-clip" was called a "Jesus clip" by my Dad. I asked why that was and he said: "Because, if you don't catch it when it comes off and flies across the floor, you'll be saying Jesus, where did that go?". Lesson learned.

    I'm a hydraulic mechanic in the Netherlands. Those are some steep prices for a simple cilinder, probably its even cheapest to get a new tube sawn of, welded and turned at a specialist shop and keep the ram but it'll be close to a brand new cilinder. You can also get your self a secondhand one, the stroke doesn't matter that much to be exactly the same. You can use a two way cilinder aswell and put a breather on it.

    In theory, no fluid--or very little fluid--would be on the top side of the piston. Piston seals are bypassing, because of the pitting, allowing the fluid to leak the piston until it's forced out the ram seal. That top seal isn't a pressure seal but is primarily to keep dirt/water/etc. from getting inside and ruining the piston seals. But that cylinder is toast! Someone previously tried to replace all the seals, but the cylinder negated any new seals.

    Hey buddy. I would try to find a long ball hone and clean that up. Worst case scenario you own a new tool. I would also replace the seals. On the end of the rod is the piston. Underneath that piston seal is an o ring. Even if the outer seal looks good the o ring could be cracked. There may even be an o-ring on the inner part of the piston, which seals it to the rod. That brass part is called the rod guide. It keeps the rod straight in the barrel. You’re correct, that’s a dust seal or wiper seal. The lower part of it that you said was gouged is more than likely a split bushing, at least that’s what it would be on all the Deere cylinders I’ve built. One more thing. DO NOT USED COMPRESSED AIR TO DISASSEMBLE A HYDRAULIC CYLINDER. It turns into a missile quickly. I know this because I shot a rod right between a group of people talking one time.

  • @seth256
    @seth256Ай бұрын

    Good luck on being an indepent tech! I am a John Deere tech and have had to reseal quite a few cylinders, just so you know, its unwise to use compressed air to disassemble cylinders with compressed air. They can shoot across the shop and damage things while flying. If one is stuck and dont want to come apart i usually hook it to a hitch of a pickup and yank it with a forklift or pickup, with a pallet or something under it to catch it.

    That’s a steal for 1,500 dollars. I would have loved to have that when I was doing engines all the time. I had to use a forklift or my crane on my truck. I have an automotive size engine hoist for gas engines. I would have rather had one like you have. Nice find! When ever I rebuild cylinders like the one on your lift, I ditch any rubber seals and opt for urethane seals for both gland cup and wiper seals, and piston seals. And I’d probably run a hone down the barrel. Of course with it disconnected so to be able to flush out honing debris. And I’d chamfer that pin hole with a rol-lock scotch brite wheel.

    Time 357 , that square block at the bottom of the cylinder is a velocity fuse. This is used to block the ram if a hose fails / the lowering valve is wide open the arm does not fall to the floor. This is also used on forklifts and other equipment.

    They can click it like this--> 3:57 Back around 2004 or so, we had the "nut end" of the ram snap off inside the main boom cylinder of a backhoe which DROPPED the entire boom and hammer attachment INSTANTLY to the ground. Can't remember the hour meter or warranty details but dealer service fixed it good as new. They tell me now that since then, that design has been eliminated and changed into a rigid safety spec & it's impossible for "free fall" anymore. I never learned why. Always fascinated me due to this accident. Maybe that velocity fuse idea is now integral in the big rams. But I still won't allow ANYONE under a raised boom. ANYWHERE. EVER. (Yep, I'm "that guy" on the jobsite lol-I don't care what they say-nobody under raised booms) Cheers!

We have 2 trucks in our home shop and 3 more scheduled out for complete overhauls. Plus the “simple” jobs of DOT insp & oil changes that get squeezed in. 😊 I’m so happy you became independent. The price for a ram seems high, might look at a whole new or reman unit. You will still be ahead. On a side note, given the good terms of your separation from Western States, they would be exercising sound business practice in utilizing you in subsequent contract work.., or at least giving you a call. Great video Thank you sir.

    I don’t know if you have them in your area but Agri Supply down here in Georgia carries an extensive selection of cylinders at a decent price. Our heavy haul shop has been using them for years with good results. Love the videos….keep up the good work

    I know you were working one handed but, to speed up the process in the future, you can lift the boom by hand, it will suck hydraulic fluid into the ram, and it stays in place of where you lifted it. Makes having things up a lot quicker. Same for floor jacks. 🤘

    Really good quality hoist you have there. It warrants the cost of repair in any case. We had trouble with the hand pump and two stage valve on ours. We put a five ton ram on in place. It works but no where near as well as the original setup. I personally would call a local hydraulic shop and see what they have to offer. Some have small machine shops that can over bore the cylinder and then oversize the seals. Nice purchase none the less. Hard to find good quality like that today.

    "Lip seal" is a wiper seal and, you guessed it, it's there to keep stuff out, not in. That bronze bushing looked shot as well, gouges are bad. Take it to a hydraulic repair shop, they can build a new one pretty easy. All in all you're looking at still paying less than half price for the hoist, so not a bad deal overall.

    OTC is excellent stuff....money well spent here! I know from experience some stomach butterflies come with opening your own biz But adrenaline too!....The kind you can't get any other way...and the self satisfaction you get at end of day at home. It never goes away...refreshes with every customer phone call..'what 'cha got?' Whole family is bound to be energized! And your kids get to be a part of whole thing.....they're far, far more likely to be independent themselves!

    We've got the same one at work but it does have an electric pump. All it does is gets moved around the shop to make room for projects lol. We do have hoists so they get used instead. Plus it isn't going to reach things on the stuff we normally work on.

    We have one of these in my Freightshaker shop, bought from Gray, its air/hydraulic. Weve only used it once to pull a DD5 from a school bus. Otherwise we use the small picker for heads and such, or the forklift for engines 😂

    Most of those cherry pickers are hydraulic up gravity down and so the piston seal to barrel are the bad one and the oil coming out when ya get to the top because that's how much oil is sitting on top of the piston your likely going to tell us that i am only couple minutes in. mostly making a comment to help channel! GO JOSH GO.

    You can get cylinder barrels sleeved. I'm from Wisconsin and the Amish are good machinists. Just find a place bring the barrel and piston in and they will fix it up

    As far as it goes you could either rebarrel that cylinder or possibly rebore and make a new piston. Provided the wall thickness allows sufficient material remains. You do not want to eliminate the drop safety valve on the cylinder

    The chrome plating is why cylinders are expensive. Also the seal on the brass piece is called a wiper seal it's just meant to keep dirt and debris out. Looking forward to your future endeavors!

    Josh, all your content is interesting. Don't worry about the subject, just make your vids, they're all great. Best wishes for huge success with your new venture in wrenchin' on your own. Not a hydraulics expert myself, but I bet a hydraulics shop would refurb that cylinder, up-size the glands and seals, and move forward with it. Not sure how much could be removed from that inner wall without affecting the rating of the ram. Curious how much damage happened to it on the inside.

    Used air one time on a 235 stick cylinder. Rod went through the shop wall, killed the air compressor and a bench grinder on the way out.

    It may make more finacial sense to simply replace it in its entirety. You see if the honing process would sufficient to try and correct the problem in the barrel. It would be oversized so a new ram may need to be fabricated, the current ram would need to mic"d to ensure no wear spits on the exterior, plus checked for straightness... but that only if the chrome itself isnt overly damaged, and through the camera it looked a bit rough. You would also need to do complete reseal, and oversozed for the barrel. I dont know machine shops near would charge to check it and spec it out. Simply replacing the entire thing, and then somewhere down the line think about a complete rebuild of this one. It would get the lift up and running sooner than later and save you a bit of money in the mean time. Thank you for another wonderful video, and praying for much success in your new emdeavor.🙏💜

    Talk to your local hydraulic/machine shop maybe they can replace the barrel for you, or perhaps maybe a generic cylinder from an ag dealer might do the trick. But, yeah, I expect OTC will want mega bucks for a replacement barrel/cylinder.

    Just had an idea…….find a combine feederhouse/header lift cylinder. Probably have to make some modifications on it to make it fit, but they normally have the big rod that’s same as cylinder bore like that one. Most other cylinders will have smaller rod that would probably be fine but if you want one like that, JohnDeere combines in most salvage yard will have ones like that. If you get me bore/rod diameter and stroke I can measure a couple that are what is likely to be available in salvage yards and see if it’s an option.

  • @typrus6377
    @typrus6377Ай бұрын

    Dunno what the machinist scene is like up there, but you might be able to have a new barrel made for half that if your rod is in good shape. Pocatello used to have the Navy's large-bore gun factory, and a bunch of supporting industry, but thats been a long time ago.
