If you had a podcast where you talked to other big names in the diesel industry I’d listen to that
I have an old book on the history and biography of Rudolph diesel and development of the diesel eng. It is definitely worth reading. Funny thing, the book was given to me from an old mechanic who passed away in 2015. He used to work for Mack truck in P.A

I didn't know anything about Rudolf Diesel, but the story sounds about right. History is replete with individuals who've done the most to advance humanity being marginalized, killed, or "disappeared". Boy I sincerely hope we're finally growing up as a species, I'm so weary of our immaturity the more I learn about history.
Before electric Motors, line shafts driven by an engine were quite common to power factories and shops. Our Amish neighbors have diesel engines that they run every morning to power their properties
MAN diesel survived from Rudolphs era part of original company. Rudolph Diesel was a good guy who was against his engines being used for war machines .
I really , really enjoyed your recounting of Rudolf Diesels Life! Very well done!
This is the best video ive watched in a while thank you this was awesome i love history and learning
Really enjoyed this video. Thanks
Fascinating ! Thanks , Man ! 👍
Very well done. Concise and informative.
Thanks for this video, very interesting and informative.
I bought that book for my dad for his birthday. Fascinating stuff
Great video. Love learning something new and expand my knowledge.
Great video! Your conclusions give me food for though, especially the possible Canadian connection! The fire piston is just an excellent demonstration showing how Diesel engines produce ignition.
The Douglas Brunt book was fantastic! Loved reading the book as a heavy duty mechanic.
EXcellent, I just got the audio book. Thank you, Josh.
Excellent episode.
Great topic!
The first chapter in our theory books was dedicated to him. It claimed that he burned his hand while picking up the air pump he had just used to inflate a bicycle tire with. His engines ran on peanut oil. Robert Bosch is credited with designing the first practical fuel injection system for a Diesel engine. Thank you for sharing
Thanks!
excellent video thanks
I love your channel man
Thank you Mr. Cummins and Mercedes-Benz.
Very interesting story
reading Diesels book now thanks for the suggestion
Just read the book, pretty good read. I wished it had a little more technical information on the earliest diesel engines, but that's available elsewhere. The book was a pretty good biography. The disappearance was very mysterious.
Always enjoy your videos , diesel engines very interesting . I like them have a Cummins 5.9 and a Mahindra Roxor 2.5 turbo jeep.
Nice video...watched it sitting here on my restart 34 HR break with a real diesel, a Detroit dd13 running. I just changed all my filters last week myself with genuine DD parts, and I have noticed a stumble at idle since the procedure. Idle just feels weird, and because I changed parts, well look at what I changed. Turns out my Davco 485 bowl is sucking air.....off to find some silicone!!!! Thanks to your guidance I'm almost ready to do my first overhead! LOL Great vid....
My 1942 AEC Matador was badged as having an oil engine. The term diesel I understand was frowned on during certain times. Thanks Josh.
I had heard about Rudolf Diesel, not this much and it was very informative, another name that I remember is Bosch that supposedly developed the first diesel engine injector pump to be able to control diesel engines in smaller craft ie trucks
Internal fire and the diesel odyssey of clessie Cummins are 2 good books that combine lots of history with diesel engines. Both by c Lyle Cummins and both worth a read…
I knew of A.D., but not this information. Great video! Thanks!

Ammonia is still used in refrigeration. The most common application I know of is RV refrigerators which run on propane (many times with other heat sources too). Engines, both gasoline and diesel, also were an environmental breakthrough as they eliminated all of the horse waste in cities as the main short haul source of locomotion at the time was the horse. Just think about what kind of emissions horses have. Good story. Keep the good stuff coming.

@@jamesgarner4127 It’s a lot smarter than raping diesel motors with DEF and overpriced filters that require us to destroy the food and water supplies of other countries.
Very good video
There is an audio book/book out about him and the stuff surrounding it. Its a great listen!
Great show Josh. He was up there with Tesla on creativity.
I also listened to this book on audio. A very good book that talks about the man and the time frame he lived in. Sure would like to know what really happened with his disappearance.
Good history video. Maybe one day you could do one on the history of Caterpillar.
great video, just ordered the book...

I think anyone with an interest in the subject will enjoy it.
Maybe you could touch on some oddball diesel engines, like the semi diesel engines used in Lanz Bulldog tractors.
I recommend reading the Diesel odessy by Clessie Cummins good reading.
This was different, but I found it very interesting 👍
Wow, this guy invented the ice machine! There is no way he committed suicide! His plan was to have the diesel run off any type of bean plant that could make a spark.
Josh, you have always been great about suggestions. I would love your opinion on Fass or bull dog andother fuel aftermarket pumps to improve fuel mileage and cleaner fuel and less air in the fuel. Thanks

If you follow patent announcements, Toyota is today working on an ammonia engine. While I’m certain Diesel wasn’t really driving towards emissions… the exhaust of an ammonia engine is water and Nitrogen. 78% of the air we breathe is nitrogen.
Remember, the English King, Kaiser Wilhelm, and Crar Nicholas were first Cousins.
The plot...... it thickens
Awesome video. I have a unrelated question. What's the best to contact you? I have a 1999 w900l will a cat 3406E 1lw engine with the brake saver but the computer screen says no data link communication but the truck runs fine but the abs light is constantly on when you turn the key . So you know anything about this problem? I have a 2007 kw with a kcb c13 and when that computer says the same thing it will not run at all just cranks over . But I'm stumped?
Not trying to direct traffic away, but check out Find Hansen, he has multiple videos on building model diesel engines entirely from scratch as Diesel would have.
19:23 ohh man, the ironie
Please do something to let the world know how efficient a diesel engine can be over the alternatives.
Hi Josh, probably my question is off topic to todays discussion. But l would want to ask on C10/12 jacobs brake mechanism, since jacobs operation does depend on oil pressure. Does the oil pressure sensor play a role when it comes to controlling the ECU's jacobs solenoid switching? My reason is, will the jacobs operate if oil pressure is low?
Hey Josh what's the product code on that red packman logo cap? cheers JB
His earliest engines burned coal dust. That time there wasn't any gas, mineral oil or anything like that. Lamps still burned whale oil and it was expensive.
I believe there was some challenge to his patent. If you are familiar with engine indicator diagrams, as designed the diagram was suppose to resemble a steam engine's diagram, but in the real world it more closely resembled an Otto Cycle diagram. I believe this had something to do with the ignition delay and how the pressure rose. Some say that challenge was the reason for him killing himself
Not just engines but fuel would it be named diesel fuel without him ?
I know about that since 19 87 when i was in the schol
7:00 this demonstration also explains the Taco Bell effect.
Ammonia coolers yes
Great video thanks for sharing
Woow interesting video. I'm not sure, but I read that the original diseal engine designed by Rudolph Von Diseal was to run off peanut oil? Strange...
@typrus6377

The original was intended to run on blown coal dust. That's the one that exploded on him. The first successful iteration could run on peanut oil, yes.
Its an intresting story here in europe there is alot of diesel engines around even some lawnmower style engines on generators etc 😅 and small 4 cylinder diesels in cars. Its not uncommon to find a car whit a 1.6 litre turbodiesel
I have read lots about him also Not many people know anything about him
Did everyone forget photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide?
GM engineers, in their boundless wisdom, caused America to become enthusiastic about light diesels decades later.

Maybe you should say un-enthusatic with the Oldsmobile 350 diesel, a real piece of junk!
Interesting although I knew the story. A good follow on would be how A Busch held the patent for quite a while in the early years...diesel engines with the AB symbol on them. Lol. You said it just I thought of it. Early on, not just burns C10H20 or so...you could jam many different fuels into the thing...even olive oil. Not anymore. Do that now and you destroy $10K+ worth of very complicated fuel systems. History is fun. Is diesel worth it anymore? Not from an automotive(cars/trucks) standpoint IMO. Too much BS and expense to deal with.
Mr. Diesel also had an engine that could run off of peanut oil.
Diesel engines basically run the world Trucks trains ships and busses even jet aircraft fly on a variant of diesel fuel
@adeptape Been a while since we have seen a video from in the shop. Does your cat shop still work on trucks? Our local Cat dealer only works on industrial engines now. No on-road.

It's called having a life and finding opportune moments to record at work. Try working on a CAT engine yourself and learn something from doing instead of sitting around watching videos. Even better, start doing your own videos.

I watch and read all the time to learn. Just wondering if his work place stopped allowing him to make work type videos or if they are also only doing industrial work as well. I do work on trucks all types and engines. I do make videos (certainly not at this level) but I do try to help people when I can. @@GripFreak

Also, I work in power generation and oh yes, the same NOX concerns have been apart of that since before it was a concern in compression engines('cept it was a concern in cars since the late '60s). Diesel engine companies call it DEF and Selective Catalyst Reduction but in power plants(natural gas especially), it is just called UREA(not dangerous) or even sometimes straight-up ammonia(dangerous). It is a lot easier to put an emission control system on a single power plant than a million tiny power plants. It just isn't economical to to have diesels that are compliant anymore. They're on the way out for sure.
Since Rudolph Diesel was German his name really should be pronounced deezul not deesul. Just a little Canadian criticism of my American neighbors, no offense intended.😊
Need to sort out the brows bud 1 is different than the other ,left eye dodgy
The author is Megyn Kelly's husband.
Please stick to cat motors
there are small companies and inventers with amazing inventions of how to alleviate/circumvent the NOx problem! Better oil-filtering
