    This looks very confusing for me as an european. In europe we take the area in mm² for measurement. So small diameter = small area = small number = small cable

    I plan to craft with anodized aluminum wire, is the nonferus wire gauge going to be appropriate for figuring out which wire will match?

    Does the real pointy one work better than the flat one for, let's say, 0.5" ID 3/4 OD "soft" rubber/epdm/norprene hosing/tubing? I was told the pointy one is designed for soft tubing as the 90 degree pointed blade won't bend and pinch the tubing as much as the flat or less pointed cutters made more for hard/PVC tubing. Having said that, in your video, it seems the pointed cutter (3:23) squished the tubing just as much as the flat cutter (2:57)...

  • @JustToolBasics
    @JustToolBasicsАй бұрын

    The pointed one works a little better if the tubing is very reinforced (like with those little threads embedded in the walls like shown toward the end) - the steeper cutting angle slices through those fibers a little better, instead of having pinch/crush them against the flat anvil of the other style cutter or, if more heavily reinforced, having to "chew" through them. The two hoses I showed here weren't very heavily reinforced, so it didn't make a huge difference. Regardless, if the tubing is soft, it's going to squish. These cutters aren't, like, scalpel-sharp.

    I had been told that gague was how many wires it takes to make an inch. That seemed wrong to me, so I'm glad this video explains how it actually is measured.

    It's a callback to Milhouse on The Simpsons (from the episode in the 1990s where he has a lemonade stand and at some point is like "We've squozen our whole supply! To the lemon tree!"). "Squozen" just became part of the vernacular of my friends and me, I guess!

    And one certainly should check for a bootleg ground (a receptacle ground plug linked to the neutral plug) as well, a configuration that can stump receptacle testers.

    Having trouble.....purchased both 8mm and 5/16" bolt for replacement. Size appears correct, but the threads on both are too tight together compared to my original bolt. What to do next? Thanks

  • @boinger
    @boinger2 ай бұрын

    There are multiple (usually two but sometimes more) different thread pitches for a given size of bolt/nut. In your case, there is both 8-1.00 and 8-1.25 on the metric side and 5/16-18 and 5/16-24 on the SAE side. Sounds like you got the fine (narrower) pitch where you needed the coarse (wider) pitch.

  • @DhruvaMaharaja1952
    @DhruvaMaharaja19522 ай бұрын

    @@boinger Thank you very much for this info.....very much appreciated. Will the more coarse pitch be available at Lowes, etc.? If not, where do you suggest I look?

  • @boinger
    @boinger2 ай бұрын

    @@DhruvaMaharaja1952 Should be available at a hardware store. Certainly one of the thread pitch options will be the more common option, but if you search around I imagine you'll find what you're looking for. Also, the sort of thread checker that's in this video would help determine which is correct without having to guess :)

    I would partly disagree. For some applications, yes, but for others where synching up tight is important, your "wrong" way is much better. Using the buckle really aids in getting a tight wrap.

    1:40 2023 here; the number of replacement requests after someone kills or fries new PC components during a build project would belie your claim. They're NOT coated in anti-static film as you say. Designed to be handled? Lol That's like saying cars are designed to be driven. Or as the kids say, "no shit, Sherlock!" Sure, you might be right. But is it designed to be handled by the ungrounded? Again, check the number of replacement parts requests of just bought items, visit some PC build forums starting with several reddit communities on the topic. Actually, I'd love to read up whatever you're basing your assertions on and be proven wrong. Do reply with links or even search terms I could enlighten myself with.

    I accidently fried my laptop a few years ago while I was just cleaning the cooling fans for my video & graphics card... I had done that many times ... that last time it was very cold and being unaware of the need to ground or misunderstanding how to be properly grounded... I killed the motherboard >.<. Ever since that mistake (thankfully I had accidental coverage on that laptop & it was replaced eventually) I've been almost paranoid about working on my laptop. My BIL actually bought me the laptop I have today and purchased an extended warrantee & 24/7 365 tech support from Dell... Literally I had a dell technician come to my home and replace my keyboard because the backlighting wasn't working. Then I ended up having to ship my laptop back to Dell because I can't remember exactly what happened but I ended up getting a brand new laptop O.O! So this will be the first time I open a case in years and I know feel more comfortable & confident that I'll be fine & grounded properly. Thank you so much for the explanation, I really appreciated learning more than I did coming into this video. <3
