Grounding Probe Basics - ACTUALLY ground yourself for electronics work

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The basics of using a grounding probe.
If you need to be grounded for handling delicate electronics, you need to ensure there's a completed circuit all the way to the ground. Just clipping/snapping an anti-static wrist strap to a computer case or ESD mat only dissipates a limited amount of static. If you're handling really sensitive equipment or you're in a particularly dry and staticky environment you need to be truly, properly grounded.
In this video, I show you how to use an aquarium grounding probe to link your wrist strap to your house's wiring ground. You can similarly attach an ESD mat, or whatever else needs to be grounded properly.

Fantastic!!!!!!!! You are the only one at KZread that explains this stuff right.... and gives a simple, dirty, and cheap solution for grounding !!!!! It is not only equalize our bodies and the mat to the same potential....One also needs to make that electricity goes to the ground via that power supply cabe you show in this video!!!!!! Great! Best ever!!! Thanks!

And one certainly should check for a bootleg ground (a receptacle ground plug linked to the neutral plug) as well, a configuration that can stump receptacle testers.

Thank you so much for this vid. I was swapping out pc components and wanted to take absolutely no chances with static. Since then, I’ve learned more about checking the safety of my outlets, and how to use a voltage meter… I was then sparked to learn more about electronics, have started a basic electronics course, and am now building a radio. Thanks for your informative video!!!

That's super interesting, I have never even heard of the grounding probe for aquariums. Liked the new intro music, it's super chill.

This is the exact same thing ppl are doing nowadays called earthing sleeping on conductive sheets with great health benefits by using the ground plug in the house…they usually have a grounding rod put on earth but now found you can use the house ground

I accidently fried my laptop a few years ago while I was just cleaning the cooling fans for my video & graphics card... I had done that many times ... that last time it was very cold and being unaware of the need to ground or misunderstanding how to be properly grounded... I killed the motherboard >.

My house has no ground system. Will this method still work for me? I didnt know ground exist and we only use plug without gound pin. the ground system in house, such thing only exist in developed country? I am from undevelop country and we didnt know such thing exist until after watching your video and other video on youtube. I use to hate the extra pin that cannot to my outlet, and use adaptor to connect to the outlet. sry about my poor english.

Your house definitely *has* a ground, but for many years plugs were only 2-prong and the grounding was "in the wall" and the ground was attached to the box (where the outlet/switch/etc was installed). Of course there are many cases of that being done poorly/wrongly, but that's how it's SUPPOSED to work. Unfortunately, you're going to need an electrician to check to make sure that the ground is available in the box -- if it is, the outlet can very easily be replaced with a 3-prong version. Until you have that, there's no easy or safe way to have this grounding probe setup work for you.

You can use an extension cord as well just as long as you only use the ground terminal I’ve been shocked by 440V industrial made my heart are really got arm tingle for about 4”3 hours lol I started getting shocked by 110V when I was 3 months old I would stick nails in the wall socket and pop the breaker my dad would turn it back in it would pop again it was me trying to get the nails out of the outlet lol I was a dumb little kid

You could certainly attach it to a grounding rod (which, via your home/office/whatever electrical wiring, is eventually what's happening anyway), but grounding rods are driven 4 to 8 feet deep. i wouldn't trust "plugging it into the dirt" to make a solid ground connection.

There are cheap circuit testers at Home Depot or Lowe’s or whatever. They will tell you if the ground is good.

1:40 2023 here; the number of replacement requests after someone kills or fries new PC components during a build project would belie your claim. They're NOT coated in anti-static film as you say. Designed to be handled? Lol That's like saying cars are designed to be driven. Or as the kids say, "no shit, Sherlock!" Sure, you might be right. But is it designed to be handled by the ungrounded? Again, check the number of replacement parts requests of just bought items, visit some PC build forums starting with several reddit communities on the topic. Actually, I'd love to read up whatever you're basing your assertions on and be proven wrong. Do reply with links or even search terms I could enlighten myself with.
