Safety Wire Tool Basics - Fastener Prep + Safety Wire Installation

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The basics of safety wire tools.
If you're working on dirt bikes, race cars, or just old rattletrap cars, the only way to be positive a nut or bolt isn't going to vibrate loose is safety wire (aka "lock wire").
In this video, first we focus on prepping fasteners by drilling safety wire sized holes using specialty jigs. Then we see how to install the safety wire using safety wire pliers (aka safety wire spinners).

Safety wire requires much patience and there are a lot of rules. 0.032 requires 7-8 twists per inch, twists must not exceed a distance of 1/8 inch from the hole but must not be tight to the bolt. Wire must not be pulled taught. Pig tails must be reverse twisted and turned with the direction of the wire. Twists may not be removed. Wire requires at least 20 degrees of positive pull. Wire may not exceed 6 inches in length between fasteners unless stated otherwise.. etc. That is the GE aviation SPM guidelines anyway.
