True Grit: Appalachian Ways

True Grit: Appalachian Ways

Hey y'all, I'm Meagan. My husband Andy and I grew up in rural NC and as newlyweds, decided we wanted something more than the typical American lifestyle. So we started growing our own food, I learned to can and so started this passion of food preservation and knowing where our food comes from.

Even though we grew up around this lifestyle, we still had to learn for ourselves, the ways of our ancestors before us. We now grow a huge portion of our food, including our own meat.

High society and MSM want you to think you don't have time to grow, preserve and cook your own food from scratch, but I am here to help you along the way. As a working mother of 2 on a busy little farm, there is time, we just have to prioritize it.

Live life on YOUR terms!

When we planted field corn the outside rows always got hit hard by the deer. They'd eat half the cob and move on to the next one. We would cut them down with a machete, load them into a wagon and feed them to our beef cattle. It's a lot of work but the cows sure liked it.

If you like San Marzano, try Hoss Seeds Shelby paste tomato. I noticed they recommended it to someone who usually grows San Marzano tomatoes and was ready to try a hybrid due to problems with disease pressure.

So glad you got rain! I now watch your weather forecast and it looks like you are continuing to get rain. I hope the garden and pasture is recovering and not getting too sloppy. It always seems like it’s “feast or famine” with the weather.

SQUASH BUGS. check out Tippers recipe for easy to make squash bug spray on her channel "celebrating Appalachia." I only have a few plants, so I made a small batch to put in a spray bottle. I used about 2 Tblsp red pepper flakes and one whole bulb garlic. Ground them with a little water to make a slurry. Poured about 4 cups boiling water over it and let it sit about 8 hours. Strained it into spray bottle. Sprayed squash plant (top and bottom leaves and all) in the early evening. By morning the young ones were dead and the big ones were dead or gone. Sprayed them the 2nd night just in case, but no sign of bugs. My squash plants bounced back and is bright and happy. Hope this helps. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for what you do.

I still have not had one drop of rain. Glad yall had an inch!! My garden across the road is barely hanging on. My plants at the house are doing well cause I can water these. You are absolutely right about deer eating things that they don't normally eat. They are eating on my impatiens which they have never done. They stemmed my peppers including jalapeños

Hi Megan. I made the Pool Hall Slaw today and it was delicious! Plan to use it as a condiment on hamburgers and hot dogs. For lunch, I made a ham and cheese sandwich and spread a good helping of slaw on it. The flavors took it to another level of goodness, Thank you for more good eats.❤

In college after dinner on a farm with my then girlfriend her father gifted me a home cured country ham. Me not knowing what I know now stopped by a friends house on the way home from her farm and gave the ham to some other friends because I thought it was bad (in my feeble mind). My mother was absolutely furious when I told her what I'd done. Country ham biscuits is my absolute favorite now!

That second peach tree of y’all’s, that’s exactly what my Peaches look like! We’ve had enough rain in TN. Not too much either. But our tree is about 7 years old, it’s been struck by lightning, last year we had a very bad wind storm that I thought took it out. Well it’s loaded down this year. They’re just small and not ripening up👍

Hi Friends, if you can water your fruit trees every now and then, just not to loose them, when they are ripe they will be the most flavorfull intense tasting peaches you have ever had ! The drought makes the fruits concentrated !! I have found this to be true with melons, apples, peaches, pears, corn, baby red beets, onions, and sugar snap shelling peas ! Praying for you all. ❤❤❤😊

If the field corn doesn't make ears, can you chop the green stalks and make silage? I think a wood chipper could chop it and then bag it for fermentation.

Your garden is really impressive despite the drought! Your hard work and diligence to insects and animals shows by the plants! Positive outlook even though some plants didn’t grow or got eaten. I’ve had some kind of rodent eating my new plants so I have put a tomato cage and bird netting around my round containers. So I’m going to plant some more green beans. I’m in So. Cal. Again thanks for sharing your lives and gardens with us! You tell us valuable information and inspire us with techniques. I respect your life choices with your family and homestead!!✝️❤️
