Unfortunately flies are a part of having livestock, you will notice flies around the cattle, it happens, we do treat them but I do have to be selective on products we use because of the milk cow. A good natural treatment for flies has been found to be tea tree oil. Its not horribly expensive in bulk. If you read the articles for it, they mixed it at around 5% with a carrier and sprayed it on the cattle. It kills some flies and reduces the load on them by about 50% over 24 hours.

Wise words in picking our garden battles. It took five years and five rhubarb starts from my sister to find it's happy place in my yard. Picking a battle with nature is a lot more work than figuring out where what plants want to grow and accepting that the plan we had wasn't the happy place for the plant we wanted to put there.

So frustrating to not understand why the corn came up so spotty, especially when you saved the best seed from last year and all the work that entailed. Hopefully, this years crop will be able to adapt even better to the weather/soil conditions there. You got this, Andy. Great job, Jacob!

Breakfast for supper was a regular thing at our house when I was much younger. Dad would make pancakes, mom would scramble eggs and biscuits and we felt like royalty! To this day, I try to do it as often as I can, just to be different or maybe just because it is fun. MY children freaked out when I would do it for them when they were small, but they loved it too.. LoL

I understand the breakfast for supper. My dad and grandmother taught me how to cook. And when I was about 8 years old dad started asking me if I would like to cook supper. At that age that was playing a huge part of helping the family. And it started out with breakfast for supper. Standing in a old straight back chair I would make the biscuits and spoon drop them into the "biscuit" pan. Then fry up the bacon dad had sliced up from the smokehouse meat. And always white pepper gravy. If dad wanted a "runny" egg or 2 he would fry them. I always ended up with scrambled eggs. Till a year later. That young man is so happy and proud. That's how we all learned and everything we were asked if we wanted to try,we gave our best at it. Every time you are ask to do something more. It's a joy as a child, because kids feel like they are old enough to help with the adults jobs. It makes you want to help, and it makes you want to do it correctly. And one day, dad is just sending you and your sister to work on a field or something else. My sister was 11 years younger than me, and I was her baby sitter. After I was out of high school I kept working and help my dad with things my sister needed for school else. Dad been gone 31 years and I'm now not just my sister mom, I am her dad on his wisdom. She's married and has 4 children. He husband was becoming a part of our family when we lose dad. So it's about the same except dad isn't with us. I'm very happy my dad taught my sister and I how to run the farm. I have mine own and still run it pretty much how dad taught us. And I still make breakfast for supper specially when the hens are laying so heavy.

My papa always plowed up the cover crop in the field several times before planting. Usually three to four times minimum, then he'd see how it looked and figure if he needed to give it another go. When he first started farming, he'd only plow it up once or twice, then he'd be stressed out like you are about it. Sure makes a difference in the crop yield, and your peace of mind.

I hate that y’all’s corn came in so scarce, but it’s always a gamble with the farmers, might have planted it in the wrong sign, and it being so wet it could have ruined the seed. And I remember at one of the fields y’all planted you said that you couldn’t believe you were able to plant all that space and it didn’t take that many seeds. Your planter might have been putting the seeds down inconsistently, regardless of the reason it’s not because you didn’t give it your all. There’s still a lot of corn out there, Thank y’all for the videos I enjoy all of them.

  • @sues6847

Keep the good plants at least. 1/4 of a field is better than a total loss. If you give up on the not good parts just put something that might do well there. Personally, I would give it more time but I have a much shorter season than you do and no time to start over if something fails. There are no failures when it comes to gardening. Even if you don't get a harvest, you get an education.

Good call Andy. Last year we grew close to 300 ears of sweet corn on our plot. This year, in a plot the same size, I had numerous skips as you did. I replanted the skips and I'm sure due to pollination problems, we were down 100 ears and some of the later ones were nubs. Better to start over completely. Blessed for what we got but farming is always about learning and most of the time from mistakes. Jacob did a great job! Here in Florida, thank goodness we are about to wrap up. Last few days in the high 90's with "feels like" temps around 105!! Tough pea picking weather!

Andy I’d replant that corn. That’s not a good stand at all. Your yield almost won’t be worth the effort. With the heat units steadily increasing, your new corn will be up and running in no time. Your weed seed bank is horrible in that field. I’d like to suggest that you disc LIGHTLY, let the weeds grow out, disc LIGHTLY again, then replant. You have time. Next moon phase dates for corn is 7th -8th. If you don’t decide to replant corn, I’d keep growing the weeds out a few rounds until you start to see the weed pressure lighten up, then cover crop it. Lessening that weed seed bank will make your life so much easier going forward in that field. Either way, best of luck. Love y’all ❤.

Your skips may be due to planter seed plate vs seed size, been there. Or crows? If you've seen Joseph Lofthouse "landrace gardening" you'll view that weedy field as an opportunity to choose hardy seed stock from the survivors to use next year. Corn that ignores weeds is a good kind of corn to have. Bigger risk is If you replant now you may get a dry spell and none of the new corn comes up where here you can get some corn. The existing corn has roots down to moisture already. That field may not be pretty but it can still do some good come harvest.

Apples and pork just go good together. It don't matter if it's sausage, chops or a pork roast. I make a pork roast with apples and onions that's killer. I'll save the drippings from the roast, freeze it if I have to, then make a gravy with it to go over fried pork chops. 🤤

Great job Jacob! Andy I gotta feeling your cultivating days are numbered. It's always a hard thing to decide to plow up and replant an established crop. I've had to plow up tobacco before and replant it. I was going to plow my garden this morning when I got home from work but decided to do it yesterday evening instead. It plowed the best it's plowed this year and last night I got .4 inches of rain. I just saw the weather and they are calling for fair weather until next Sunday with a 20% chance of rain. Y'all have a great Memorial Day!

We had, and still do have breakfast for supper fairly regular. It's the cheapest thing we could have since everything but the flour and cinnamon come from the farm. Seems like nowadays some folks think breakfast for supper is weird, but it's cause they're weird and don't know what's good.

Ground temperature. I had the same issue with the first corn seed I planted. The ground temp got up high enough, I planted, and all of a sudden, we had a run of temps in the 40s every night here in N Central FL. It took it over 2 weeks to germinate and spotty like yours. I was delirious. Back and forth with Greg trying to figure it out. Made me nuts. Thank God I had some transplants started in the house and managed to have early corn, then another patch with seeds sprouted in the house. Even then, everything grew slow, everything. I put okra transplants out twice. The weather was just crazy this year.

Looking at your pepper plants you might try spraying them with dawn dish soap mixed with water put in a spray bottle, just spray the plant and that should help your plant. We be in Texas down south and we have that problem as well. We use this mix on my tomatoes, cucumbers and egg plants. Good luck

Well, you at least used a bad field of corn to give Jacob his first experience and practice cultivating the field. In ten years he will be a pro thanks to his parenting.
