We Just Like To Grow Stuff | Homestead Vlog | June 21, 2024

Today we are building a very simple garden trellis for our black eyed peas! When you grow up instead of out the use of your space is so much more efficient. We've always wanted to make a trellis like this and today we finally took the time to do it. We apologize for the less than ideal audio on this video! We are working on it for future videos!
Be sure to check out Jared over at ‪@FlutyLickHomestead‬ , we know yall will enjoy his content as well! He's given us so many ideas for growing food on steep land!
The best way to support the channel: please share this video and watch more below! Thank you!

I wish I saw your videos 40 years ago when l was young enough to do all the work you guys have done around the farm... You make it all look easy, enjoyable and fun when you are all together and helping each other and learning from each other and just from your own minds, seeing the pictures in your mind of what it will look like to make it work.. Much love and appreciation from Australia ❤❤

We made cane teepees last year in our sauce garden. I planted 3-4 tomato seeds around each cane - we used only 4 canes per teepee. Those seeds came up and we tied those tomatoes - several different kinds representing determinant and indeterminant - to those canes and they did a beautiful job. We had 152 plants some on cattle panel and most on teepees. I canned 82 quarts of tomatoes, ate so many fresh and still have 6 bags - 3 gallon - in the freezer. Dang! I just finished canning peas and then beets... I need to get those tomatoes out and process them. Thankful! No complaints. This even year, only fresh eating and fermenting tomatoes in the gardens. Even years are for beans, green peas, beets, summer squash, peppers, herbs and long pie pumpkins. Next year (odd) back to sauce tomatoes, large pumpkins, winter squash, red ripper peas and pickling cucumbers. Every year fresh eating veggies but canning veggies every other year. Only 1.5 acres including house and pool and front yard on golf course (useless).

My grandfather grow up all types of bean, vegetables and more on a hillside never a problem after coming from work everyday all by hand and hand tools without help until he died, God Bless him and you all homesteaders and farmers in general. My grandpa went by the moon 🌙 very old sign before because that was how indigenous peoples did long time ago and he didn’t knew how to read or write but knew all about the land that was a long time ago when they didn’t have any schools around or close by, even my mom when to school until 3rd or 4th grade bcz that was the only available grades at school and learn to read and write but cursive only no print one by one bcz time was short and not time to learn all the steps as it’s now. No electricity before and water was from a well or river. Oh plus my grandpa had his own family land but they had to move in away to work to provide to his family and moving here and there in different places they never reclaimed their own land and it’s government property or his younger brother reclaimed all of him and his family but my mom brothers/sisters never did anything to reclaim their land it’s all lost by now. sorry English isn’t my first language. ❤

I love hearing the birds and all of the other sounds on your homestead!!! I was able to hear you and Andy just fine. I love your bean and pea trellises , they are super cool, and I am excited to see what happens. Makes gardening fun when it's hot and humid and just waiting on something to start coming in. I don't have any land to plant so I have 9 raised beds, a root pouch platform with 16 15/gal. root pouches with an attached cattle panel. A couple more root pouches and a few barrels. We also attached a few cattle panels and made an arch over 2 of the beds, then a few down the center of a couple more. I grow my peas, cucumbers and sugar baby and yellow doll watermelons on them. I mix 8 oz. of hydrogen peroxide (from Dollar Tree) to 1 gallon of water and spray my cucumbers, stops most fungal disease. I prune my squash, cucumbers, watermelons, and tomatoes. I really pack out my beds, I have 12 jalapeno and 12 banana peppers in one 3x8 bed! I love that I can water with the hose too. I am getting some yellow straight neck squash and I hope to be picking a first round of Contender bush beans on Monday. I want to try a late crop of Jade and Green Blaze beans too. Tomatoes have been keeping me on my toes with all the pruning and running weave. My better boys are loaded with green tomatoes, quite a few Hossinators, Red Snapper, and Shelby too. Bought another small freezer on clearance so if all of these tomatoes come in at the same time, like last year, I won't lose as many. Sorry so chatty, love all of your videos, thanks for sharing!

I have smaller versions of your tee pee trellis and I actually had to wrap string/rope around the tee pee part because, like you mentioned, the bamboo canes are so smooth, the vines can get heavy, they just slide right down. So by wrapping the tee pee (like how you did at the top) it helped the vines attach horizontal while they're growing up. Wishing you a bountiful harvest! Best wishes, Sheri xoxo

This is the first year I beat those vine borers. Started plants inside and when they got a good size, I made small slits in the main trunk and used a syringe to inject some BT mixed with a little water. I had heard it worked. Well the borers still got in the trunks, I expected the plants to die but they didn’t. The borer must have died inside and my plants are all still going. 😊 finally!!!
