It Is What It Is | Homestead Vlog | June 17, 2024

Today we are having to make a few changes on how we do things, it has been around 17 days since we have had measurable rainfall and temperatures are rising. We know the Lord will bless us with rain when the time is right, but for now we've got to do some readjusting.

Joel Salatin talks about how they would pour concrete inside tires and set the fenceposts in them and harden. Then they could move electric fencing where the ground wasn't suitable.

We are having a dry spell. This is our potatoe crop . I have gave 3 buckets away. And I have canned another bucket. I'm so proud of my potatoes. God is good. It wouldn't let me show the picture off the potatoes. We got 2 big wash tubs heaping over plus 4 more buckets.

I love hearing a roaster crow early of the morning. I have been retired for 11 years now and still wake up at 04:30 every morning. I can hear a roaster at a distance start crowing at about 06:00, if I am outside. Some mornings I go out just to hear him crow, brings back good old memories.

Hey folks. Happy summer! Looks like you are doing what all good farmers do for their livestock by remaining flexible and attentive. If you have a bit of your tree line that can be fenced in some way to allow cattle to wander in some of it, it might be helpful. Like you have done with your pigs. Just a thought. Some of the trees may be healthy for them to eat the leaves (free forage and “pruning”), and their size takes care of some of the undergrowth. Cattle do well when forested. 😊

This week, it's already been 98 degrees, 2 days in a row, with no end in sight this week. Also, no rain for the past 2 weeks, either. I understand the stress this causes for ya'll. For us, the stress this puts on the crops, the gardens, the animals (we have cows, goats, horses, chickens, etc) is really hard on them. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to protect and consider the lives of your animals and make sure they can be safe and comfortable in this weather. Special prayers and blessings to all of you, including the viewers of this video.

We've been dry here to till last Thursday evening. Got .9 that night and luckily very little hail that had been forecasted. Then got another .7 on Saturday so very thankful as I'm sure my gardens are too! Praying some comes your way soon! I don't like using pesticides either but the Japanese beetles were horrible last summer here so I bought some liquid sevin and sprayed. Did the job and the harm to your vegetables is harmless. Just wash good before using. Hoping not to see those nasty bugs this year!!

Have you ever thought of putting hogs in that brushy area? They'll clean it out and it looks shady enough. You can also get some heavy gauge copper wire, staple it to the top of your raised bed, and that'll really help with the slugs. Its amazing, they touch it and turn right around most of the time.

I still have about 6 cabbages outside in the garden that are looking kinda buggy. Started picking some yesterday. OMG the worms and slugs in them. Pick off the outer leaves and then soak them in cold water with some Redmond Real salt and the worms and slug come right out and sink to the bottom of the bucket. Love watching your videos.

You could but some of those large food safe containers, put spigots on them and load them on the chicken trailer. Put some gutters on your out buildings and create a rain catchment system. When you have no rain like now you can move the trailer where you need it and put a little water where you need it most

Thanks for sharing what all you have to go through taking care of a farm/ranch/gardens. It isn't like the city folks think that you just throw out seeds and pick the foods. You folks are doing a great job to maintain your property animals and feed your families. You're doing it right and honestly. Looks like that shiny tape in the bottom garden is doing the trick better than anything else would do. We pray you get some rain for the plants to grow for the animals and the gardens but not enough to cause you any damage with storms. Stay safe and keep up the great videos and fun you all have around there. Hope you can figure some way to fix up a great hay wagon out of the chicken house on wheels. Maybe find an old mobile home frame to extend the length and provide more stability?? Fred.

I drape my cabbages with black bird netting. That keeps the little white butterfly from laying eggs on the cabbages which then become green caterpillars that eat 24x7. Works great and is re-useable. I don't have a slug problem so no suggestions there. You could try a floating insect cover as well.
