Savvy Dirt Farmer

Savvy Dirt Farmer

The Savvy Dirt Farmer channel is here to show you how we are building a nursery business from the ground up. We started out as hobbyists with a small nursery in our backyard, in approximately 1,200 square feet. Many trials and errors later, we are in the nursery business full time today and are now growing our family nursery business together. The trials, errors, successes, and failures are documented here. Somewhere, buried in these many videos, there may be something here for you to learn if you are interested in starting your own trek into the wonderful world of the small nursery business. We are located in far NW Alabama, ZONE 7.

    These plants really don't look much different. Fertilizer has to be the biggest scam after peat moss....At least make your own out of weeds if you really want to "fertilize" a plant.

    Hey, I’m in OH thank you for your educational video, I’m planing on buying hardwood bark mulch and they told me that their hardwood bark has walnut wood and that it’s too acidic for planting vegetables but they said that I can ask them in advance not to add walnut wood, so they said it’s $13.50 for a yard and an half, I’m glad it’s very affordable and I can see it’ll work, thank you, great video.

    Darn, I was hoping for something other than internet. FB seems like the worst of all the bad online markets....Is there any advantage over using eBay ?

  • @savvydirtfarmer
    @savvydirtfarmerКүн бұрын

    Ebay is internet, yes?? You can definitely sell via Ebay, but that's a whole different business model than I use. YOu can do great with it! For a local nursery, seeking to sell plants in your own community, nothing is better than Facebook.

    How do I keep my plants over winter that I just propagated abut six weeks ago? I am in zone 4

  • @savvydirtfarmer
    @savvydirtfarmer3 күн бұрын

    Long way til winter. Let them grow and get as big and heavily rooted as possible. Come winter, let them go dormant (freeze). If the plants are hardy in your zone, they don't need much care at all. But if I were you, I would cover them in plastic for most of the winter to give them the best chance of high success rates next Spring.

  • @LenoreErickson
    @LenoreErickson3 күн бұрын

    This is my first time propagating both in water and soil about six weeks ago. They are doing well with new roots and sprouts. How long before they can go in the ground. I live in zone 4.

  • @savvydirtfarmer

    Take is SLOW and EASY. Let those roots get big and thick before you try to transition them to anything different.

    Question for you "Mr Savy" lol. When you lay down your weed barrier, should the ground that will be under it be clear of any grass? I've seen people doing it both ways, so not sure if one is better? You would think the grass would grow through it if not removed. But have heard the weed barrier will kill the grass underneath.

And when I do layout and bed, The deer prune my cuttings for me lol. I will not get any silver dollar cuttings now.
