Making money selling FRUIT TREES!!

One of the many directions a nursery can go is in the direction of growing and selling edibles. They are popular and always will be, for obvious reasons... everybody's got to eat. We're taking a crack at having a fruit tree sale. Hoping for a good turnout and lots of buyers!

    I can’t wait to hear how the fruit tree sale went. Because my primary focus is native flora, I have 250 native tree seedlings (1-2 year, eight different varieties) due to arrive very soon, hopefully this coming week. My plan is to pot them up in trade gallons and put them in the greenhouse until May 4, my opening day plant sale. (Our last frost date is May 15!) A couple months being cozy in the greenhouse will help them grow nicely, I think. I’m just about ready to start potting the 30-day stratification native wildflowers. (I have close to 100,000 seeds stratifying! 😱) Although I have lots of veggie and annual seeds, I think I will order plugs instead because I just don’t have the time or space to start all those seeds yet. I’m praying like crazy for great germination and growth rates. I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing! 😱🤷‍♀️😱🤷‍♀️ I hope to have all of these listed on my website for pre-orders by March 1st. I’m terrified but trusting God for the increase! I can do everything right, but only He can make a seed grow.

    You're right, you can't do all your own starting and propagating unless you have a large staff and acres and acres. I've seen nurseries out here in CA that are over 100 acres. I sure hope Savvy Daughter keeps the business going down the road, nothing builds generational wealth and strength better than a family business.

    I just bought 5 Dwarf Everbearing Mulberry and 4 Celeste fig trees online, plus 2 Pineapple Guava. Never tried that. Not sure it will grow in Louisiana. I wish I had a pear tree but I`m avoiding trees that I have to wait years to get a harvest. I also already have an almost one year old Brown Turkey fig tree growing and four cuttings from it rooting. My soil was destroyed by the previous people who lived here so it`s gonna be a LOT of work bringing in soil to get these trees established and rooted in the red dirt that`s as hard as concrete. I got a pick axe to try to at least chop holes in it some.

    I've bought several crab apple trees, bare root (from local county co-op yearly tree sale), and they are in garbage bags (roots are bigger than what you have) but they have some sort of moisturizing goop on the roots. Lilacs too. And it lasts quite a while. at least a week. I think (if I remember) they had a vat of the goop, and dipped each root ball into that and then put in a garbage bag and tied it shut. Super fast and inexpensive.

    That's SO smart. You're going to sell out quickly! Maybe make a list of varieties people ask for that you don't have... for next year? Those brightwells are SO good! They just didn't do well in my mid Missouri environment - too cold. I like how you're growing incrementally and exponentially.

    Pro Tip: Blueberries often need a second plant to be properly pollinated, so be sure of any variety you get first. There are some types they are self-fertile, also. "Kaffir" Lime is pronounced more like "Caff-ir"(as in "Caffeine"). A "Kiefer"(key-fer) is German for "Pine tree", or even "jaw". Glad to see everything coming together for Spring!

    Blueberries: I have 4 rabbiteye varieties, all known to be friendly toward one another. And, the Kieffer is a pear, not a lime, and, I'll butcher anything when I pronounce it. That's just how it is.

    just curious how far you have to travel to find a good wholesale source for your quick flips? It would seem not too awful far since you don't have trailer after trailer load, if it were too far i'm sure you would have to haul alot more per trip? That's the biggest issue I see in that business, if you're near a good wholesaler, you probably have a lot of competition. To be the only guy around for miles with the plants is a good thing, but then you're traveling an awful lot to get your stock. Wonder what that happy median is. I don't see this industry like other industries where "competition is a good thing" like car dealerships, this dealer doesn't have what you want but the guy across the street does so your customers bring in my customers sort of thing. Unless you have better presentation, are easier/nicer to deal with, have a different image/message...but i could be completely wrong on that assumption.

  • @savvydirtfarmer

    @savvydirtfarmer

    I don’t have a good wholesaler near me. Sometimes I have to drive almost 200 miles one way. But, I do not do that very often and that is why we try to grow most of our plants here in our own nursery. We grow probably 75% of the plants we sell, so hauling wholesale flips is not a huge part of what we do.
