Great day!! So buying in stock seems to be the magic sauce. I'm learning that cash flow is so important to a successful nursery. I guess growing everything out yourself would have you chasing your own tail. I love your business model and it will help me in my retirement nursery. Thanks Odoms! Have a wonderful Resurrection Day!

I learned .. the hard way... flowering plants do not like the cold and even under 60 degrees they can be damaged. So now I do a nightly cover using Plant Cover Freeze Protection cloth. Can't trust the weather. Considering it's only March/April.. we still get frost even after the frost date.

Congratulations! An idea, if you get to keep those racks the plants came in on, if you are going to potentially have a frost, put the annuals in the carts and wrap them in plastic overnight. I’ve seen a nursery up here in Michigan do that to save the plants.

If you water your plants in the afternoon giving them a good drink, then cover them with frost cover, they should be fine. Also, Google your average last frost date, that should tell you how long you need to cover the plants at night. Just put in your zip code and average last frost and Google will tell you. You could start a sale tent for the ones that get damaged... Sounds like you had a wonderful Good Friday!

Depending on the temps and specifics of the frost/freeze, you can turn on your irrigation and run overnight, or early early morning until the temps rise, and the running water prevents the frost/freeze from setting in. Cranberry growers and other fruit growers will do that.

Great, best to you! It’s a matter of getting started and being patient. The reason we started our channel is because of channels like Craig’s, savvydirtfarmer. We can all learn from each other and we all grow different plants, in different parts of the country. We have links to several channels on our website as we could never cover all the information. Good to see different techniques too. We just love Craig and Casey’s story. Backyard to full scale nursery. Wonderful people, family and a never quit work ethic. We also have had the opportunity to buy some of Craig’s rooted arborvitae’s, we think it makes our nursery a little more Savvy! Lol

Hooray for a great opening day! Also, your wife in the video was a great addition. She has a natural grace on film. I hope all of you take the entire day off after close today through Easter night. Even when launching a new business, take regular breaks for whole days. A few hours doesn’t cut it. Take entire days off to rest, do non-business activities and allow your brains to think about other things. Your marriage and family come first. Customers can wait and they will. They want you to succeed and so do I. 🙂 Congratulations to you all!

I am starting my own backyard nursery piece by piece at 16. The first I did was buy 3 green giant arborvitae so that when it comes to time to try and propagate they’ll be big enough. I swear they’ve grown an inch overnight, I just bought them yesterday

Congrats on your successful opening day. Hard work and planning creates success and you are an example of that, trying to do what’s right and a good sense of right and wrong sure helps. Don’t beat yourself of over the mishap with some of the plants, as long as you learn from the experience it’s all good.

I especially like hearing you are now able to have stock delivered 🙌🙌 I am learning to buy in plants too. It's overwhelming trying to grow it all.🌱🌱🌱 Thank you, Craig and Casey. My family and I have modeled our business in your footsteps and even though it is a lot of physical as well as mental work, we know we are following close behind our Shepherd Who has begun this good work in us and you. Glad it went well! Were those annuals grown in a greenhouse? if so anything under 45 can cause damage or stunted growth because they are not acclimatized to the cooler temperatures. Lesson learnt I guess - always cover just in case! Also another tip I learnt was applying water to knock off frost can actually cause more damage due to evaporation cooling! Its best to just let them recover naturally if they do get hit with frost unless you know exactly what conditions applying water will help in.
