Craig, thank you so much for your encouragement and wisdom. We faced so many Obstacles this past season, and didn't get the Nursery up and running. Some were rookey mistakes, some were way beyond our control, weather- where we get our mix had a Catastrophic failure, and burned... and there are very few places to get any mix, and only 1 organic- and some was illness and death. However with all of these things, God has been so good, we've backed up and pushed through, stepped back to see what we needed to change, and put an even better plan in place and are working Diligently towards it. Much of this is directly due to your advice. So thank you! Blessings ❤❤

“Rapidly appreciating assets!” So true! I love the economics of plant propagation! I just finished stratifying just under 100,000 native wildflower seeds and other perennials that probably cost me about $500 total, maybe. Many of them were foraged. Even if only half of them germinate and sell, it will be a phenomenal ROI. My husband only wishes his 401k did as well! God is so good to have built this exponential increase into nature! This is the one “talent” God clearly means for us to bury!

Hahaha, I have a new one about dogs, I harvest bulbs in late fall for selling right away, really nice profit and no work, they multiply themselves. Well this fall I had 4 varieties of lily, 7 daffodils and 4 tulips. So I dug, put a tag in each basket with names and….. forgot I have a puppy. A 4 month (at that time) old Irish setter puppy called Kevin. 😂 So when I looked in my first basket and couldn’t find the name tag I was a little confused, then I looked in no 2 and there’s no tag in that either I get a little panicked and when I turn around Kevin is behind me so happy and proud offering a gift of 15 name tags. Yep. He took them all. 😂 I couldn’t sell one single bulb bc I didn’t know what anything was! So, I just dug them back in ground looking forward to a spectacular show this spring and summer. Next year it will be paper bags and written names on the bags instead. I’ll have a lot of bulbs though, as an example, first year I tried it, I planted 10 daffodils and dug 42. 20 tulips was 97!😮 so with about 1000 bulbs in ground…. Well a heck of a lot of bulbs, all varieties you can’t find easily in my country, I ordered mine from The Netherlands. So, there’s a tip, grow daffodils (tulips want a cold period to thrive) that naturalise, sell them early spring in pots, like Easter plants and/or leave them in ground to multiply and sell next fall.

I thought I could sell perennials I grew from seeds. They were so small. I put them in the ground to grow bigger for this spring. Overwintering them in pots was risky. This year I am going to start my seeds 2 months earlier so come May they are a decent size.

Perennials from seed for Spring sales have to be started REAL early, as you're doing. Let me know how that goes! Eventually, I want to be doing a lot that way.

@@savvydirtfarmer The perennials I have sold so far are from my own established gardens. I have varieties that self seed and I dig up the 1 year olds and pot them up. They fit nicely in 4" pots. Have you thought of making garden beds to grow out your perennials. I find pots pots have to be watered everyday but my in ground perennials I do not water at all. When I need them I just dig them up, pot them and give them 2-3 weeks to grow in the pots.

  • @savvydirtfarmer

@@HoaGarden902 I have certainly thought of it... I've thought of pretty much everything. Right now, that would be a huge project that I don't have time to take on. I would have to build several raised beds (my soil is trash) and fill them. But... long term, that is one of multiple growing/propagating things I'd like to have in place for a perpetual supply of free plants.

It's a hard thing to learn. It used to absolutely devastate me when I saw plants looking bad, knowing I wouldn't be able to sell them, or dead. Now, I throw them in the compost pile without much though, and move on. As time goes on, the percentage that die gets lower and lower as you learn what you're doing and learn what to not be doing.

A few options, depending on what kind of plants they are... pot them into bigger pots, divide them, take cuttings and propagate, plant them in the ground, or throw them out. But the main thing is, you need to sell them. What have you tried to do to sell them?

@@chefscircle6133 Good thing is plant A does sell well. At least you're selling something. It's hard to predict year to year what will and what won't sell well. Seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. That's why it's important to have variety... increase the chances of having some really great selling plants. Make sure your plants all have display cards with nice pictures of the plants in bloom, so people can know what they look like at their best.
