First year Nursery growing vegetable seedlings!! Have I blown it already?// What I've learned so far

I'm growing vegetables from seed for my first time. Trial and error, for sure. Here's how it's going so far. Some good. Some not as good. I definitely don't have the process dialed in just yet.

Pot them directly in the quart pots right away skip the small intermediate pot or they will get more leggy. Bury them deep up to the lower set of leaves in the larger pot. They will continue to grow great if so and lose the leggy ness Your doing great ! Thanks for your videos. We’re all learning along with each other.

Aaaand with reading this I didn’t have to comment. 😊 Keep them cooler if you want to stop growth so pot them up in bigger pots, bury them all the way up to the leaves, start hardening them off asap, that will slow them down.

Stretched tomatoe starts is actually a good thing. All those hairs on the stalks will turn into roots if yiu plant them deep enough. Strip the lower leaves off and plant them super deep. Bigger roots bigger fruits.

I think that many of us seasoned gardeners followed you because you had the guts to do what we’d love to do. Go for it! You bring us joy. To sell tomatoes, I suggest investigating what sells well. I love my heirloom tomatoes and refuse to grow anything I do not really love. But most buyers don’t know what is actually good. Most prefer more “regular” types with names with words like “Big” or “Beefsteak.” You have to decide whether you want to sell to the masses or to those who know good tomatoes.

All it needs is potted past the first two leaves. Then more sun! Also a fan on them they will build strong atoms. If you set that outside in the ground it will die from the wind. They need to be hardened off that’s all. Let them get cold around 45 at night. That works great for me.

Craig, you are doing great! I just read through the comments and you've got some good advice. I mist my seedlings with 3% hydrogen peroxide to combat the mold. I do that every 7-10 days if needed, and I reduce watering until the mold goes away. The fungus gnats like the mold and their larve can eat the roots of very small plants.

A very big factor in growing tomatoes when you are trying to get the most time out of the size of pot you are using without them getting leggy, is to use a liquid fertilizer that has a lower nitrogen content. Tomatoes will absolutely rocket up if you give them too much nitrogen while having a small root ball. As far as the peppers go you could try soaking the seeds in a cup of warm water for 12hrs or so before planting them. Soaking the seeds will help in loosening the coating of the seeds for better/ faster germination.

I agree with potting directly into the larger pot… Saves time and the legginess isn’t an issue. The airflow isn’t your issue in my opinion (other than the mold). They stretch for light. I tried the colored grow lights and I thought that they were not enough. I just use the daylight bulbs that are around 3k lumens and around 6k kelvin.. That is just my opinion and I am on my 3rd year. Yes, space is very important. I mass sow similar to how you do your arborvitae cuttings…. I have planted hundreds of tomatoes in one cool whip sized container. When they start their true leaves, I pot them up.. I sow my peppers and tomatoes at Valentines Day.. They will be perfect size for my plant sale. As far as hardening them off…. I learned this year that soon after germinating they are hardy.. So I move mine in and out until I get an actual greenhouse built. You are doing great and I love the inspiration that you are giving! God Bless!

Cinnamon can prevent the mold. You're watering too much. Gotta keep wet during germination but then you have to just keep moist...if that makes sense. Keep grow lights an inch or 2 above the plant to keep your tomatoes from getting leggy. Once outside in the actual sunlight, it will resolve.

Mold loves moist warm environments, either increase airflow to wick away extra moisture (relative humidity will play a big factor also) or try to decrease watering intervals. The temperature should either be increased if able to help evaporate more moisture or lowered to inhibit the mold growth. Someone suggested cinnamon which could work very well, however, hydrogen peroxide may be easier to apply and could achieve the same results. People commonly treat their seedlings with a 3% solution (same as what you buy in the store) to help with many pests and infections. As I have not done this personally I would treat just 1-2 seedlings and wait a few days to be sure it doesn't have any unintended effects. Hope this is helpful!

I'm now using 5 lights per shelf. to grow lights and 3 full spectrum both are v led lights (two rows of led's per bulb)to harden them off put them into full shade the first few times to avoid sunburn on the leaves (white spots). You’re tomato plants look great! Just keep burying the long stem in dirt, that will make them stronger! The cold will kill them so they need to stay in the greenhouse on the colder days/nights. Peppers will also dye in the cold. For the mold, you can repot those carefully, scrape off the mold & that could help them keep growing. The larger ones could be shading the ghost peppers. So repotting could be the fix you need! Everything looks great though.

For the tomatoes, transplant into a 1 or 2 qt pot. Skip the small pot. Remove lower set of leaves and bury the stem. For all of your peppers transplant into the "selling" pot. You can cheat the hardening off process by putting your plants out on overcast days, a few hours a day , a few days in a row. But be aware of the night temps in your area before you leave anything outside. Below 40 you may lose everything. I hope you have a big kitchen as the larger pots will take up some space. Always double seed. Gives you the option of having one plant or saving two plants.

Craig, my guess on the ghost peppers is airflow and heat. Maybe put a heat mat in a 10x20 soak tray, then pop your plug tray into the soak tray. It’ll reduce thermal loss of the mat to the moving air from the fan, thus increasing soil temp, evaporation, metabolic rate of the plants, and keep any pathogenic microorganisms at-bay. If I remember correctly, ghost peppers do like it fairly warm. 70-80+, so maybe air temp has a factor, too.

When you up pot go straight into the pot you will sell them in. You plant them deep. Mold is most likely air flow. I run my fan 24/7. Give tomatoes space between each of them. Tomatoes will try to out grow what they are beside. Get them out of the 72. Count try as soon a they start to take off growing. Only fertilize once a week when in small pots. And don’t water until the soil starts to dry out. This will help with damping off when soils turning green.

They look fine to me. Most plants will naturally "harden off" after about 2 weeks, or after being removed from high humidity conditions. Tomatoes are great b/c they can always be buried deeper in a new pot/ground no matter how leggy they get. Lots of folks will leave just a couple of inches above the surface, to allow for extra root growth along the stem. Cheers from N. FL.!

Don't worry about the mold they'll do just fine but you do need to let them dry out I'd say a little too wet. A fan would help out I really couldn't tell how leggie they were by the video but they definitely should have been up potted sometime ago by the looks in the video Your really hot peppers like the habaneros they do take longer to grow whether you have heat or light. And you're right plant one type of peppers or tomatoes in a seedling Trey one reason is if you lose the tags they all look alike it's hard to tell what variety they are. When I have some plants that are way advanced in growth than the others I put them in bigger pots and I sell them for quite much more. I agree your plants look great. As soon as my plants have at least four true leaves I start hardening them off and of course that can depend on your weather I'm in Arizona so it's warmer here so I would say hardened them off at least 3 weeks before your sale

  • @amandabottoms1
    @amandabottoms14 ай бұрын

Hardening off is taking your plants outside for small amounts of time until they are ready for full sun all day long. Start with 2 hours the first couple of days, and then bump up to 4 hours a couple of days, then do 6 hours for a few days, and then they should be ready for full sun. Seems like you're right on track! I use a different method for seed starting, you might like it. I fill up 4 in pots with potting mix, throw all the seeds in, cover with a lil soil or vermiculite, and let them come up. I transplant after they get their 2nd set of leaves into the pots I'll be selling them in. I'll be making a video next week when i pot up peppers explaining the whole system.

Another pepper you might look in to. Coolapeno aka Nadapeno. Tastes EXACTLY like a jalapeno but NO HEAT! This my 1st year selling veggies but I've got a bunch of "followers" for my vegetable garden & they like them. Hope you don't mind the suggestions...

    K. I’m gonna tell you what I would do. First the mold is no problem. Those plants should be out side right now or in a greenhouse. A couple days of good hot sun that mold will clear up completely. It won’t affect the plants. Hardening off is easy. Pick the 1st shady or rainy day and get them outside. Leave them there unless the wind is really bad or any really bad weather. After a week they will be hardened off. The small plants over a couple of inches I would do the same. Those taller tomatoes get in a deep pot versus a wide pot. Bury as far up as u can. Don’t do other plants this way. Peppers and etc keep dirt at or below the crown. Then save some money and completely stop fertilizing them. I can tell by looking at the quality of the seed starting mix that they will have enough even if advertised as no fertilizer added. If u see a need for fertilizer at some point then just give em a shot of miracle grow or any other water soluble and 5 days will get them back right. This last thing we will probably disagree on but I assure you it’s solid advice is scrap the idea of double seeding plug trays. Unnecessary and unneeded. If your seeds are coming from any reputable seed dealer u should easily be getting 90 to 95 % germ rates. I actually tend to get 99% and better continuously. Sometimes better than the germ rate on the pack. When starting your trays fill with soil. Then lightly push it in with your fingers. Then add whatever is needed to smooth the top. Water liberally. Then place your seeds. Then lightly dust the top with soil. Just barely covering. 1/16” maybe. Leave that dusting dry. Cover with a standard clear top. Then don’t water until atleast 50 to 60% are kneed up. If needed after that water. This last bits just my opinion but I think that if you want to make money without breaking your back doing a greenhouse is a necessity. Even if it’s requires another state fee. lol. I built my 25 by 22 ft for under 1100 in materials and it’s solid. Plus it seems to be a good spot for misting cuttings. Lack of sunlight! Fix that and every problem u just described goes away

@@savvydirtfarmer 👍. U may get a bit of wind burn if you’re not careful with those tomatoes. Stick em on the ground under a rack where they will get a bit of shade if needed. When there that leggy sometimes it’s better to acclimate them to the wind 1st and then the sun after a couple days. Good luck

Start Chinense (super hot) varieties about 3 - 4 weeks before Annuum varieties. It's likely that more of the Chinense seeds will germinate later.

I would pot everything up soon after they get their true leaves. If you have a greenhouse type structure I would move them there if it’s not going to hard freeze. I would only give them fertilizer twice a week or even every other time. You are coming on though. Most of those are easy fixes. Not too bad for the first try.

Goodmorning Savvy crew. Youbguys are doing great. In regards to some points and concerns you had... Legginess>> clearly you have plenty of light. However, (albeit, Im not a lighting expert) is it enough of the proper spectrum of light..?? I mentioned it in the 1st video you showed us. Some white liner or backing or mirrors coud make a considerable difference in reflecting light back up into undergrowth. Reflective light matters !!!! 2nd>> the slow germ rate on that one tray. I think you pointed the problem. Its water it seems. I say this because my partner in business tends to WAAAY overdo it on our trays sometimes and the plants suffer for it. The mold fungus growth would seem to corroborate this. Also fans are good but you might possibly be stressing them a bit too much. I dont know what your light cycle is set on. 14 hours on 10 hours off etc.. perhaps they some adjustments can be made to light cycle and saturation and such. I plan on using just a simple humidifier in our setup. Still havent gotten to build it yet. Working 2 jobs and helping run a small nursery is exhausting. 😂 Look forward to opening day you guys take care 💚

with anaheim pepper the seeds do not germinate 80/20 (20 will not germinate)...guajillo, havanero, poblano have the same issue...seeds must be place in 3's and increase the chance of germination, do not thin them out...just transplant the extra to another pot..

In my experience over the last few years, growing any veg plants to sell just isn't worth the time compared to what you get from shrubs and trees. It's area dependent of course but I think there's a few reasons why. It's difficult to undercut big box stores enough for it to make it worth the customers time to come to you instead of just picking some up at their local Walmart or home Depot. With the cheap cost of produce, even fewer people are doing veg gardens, and the ones that do are likely only doing it because they enjoy it, and as a result also like starting them from seeds themselves. There's also a relatively short window of demand for them. This isn't to say you won't make money off of them, I just find that I would have made more if I had used my time and space for any popular shrub or perennial. On a side note, I haven't seen it on your channel yet but may have just missed it, but native plants grown from seed(to avoid monocultures) is really trending right now, especially with younger customers willing to pay a premium and drive a further distance for a supplier. Love your vids

I don't think your Cherokee Purples look leggy. They're just waiting for a 2 qt or even a 1 gal pot! Given some time in a 1 gal pot, around here, they would sell for $8.00. As someone who sows thousands of seeds for a greenhouse every year, sowing peppers and tomatoes and eggplants and plants of that nature, seed into a 601 and then prick out as they grow on a bit into their larger pots. May seem like a bit more work, but you won’t be wasting your time or space or dirt on seeds that don’t germinate. And it sounds like you’re potting up anyway, so no extra time wasted.

They look leggy, but tomatoes are the one plant that leggy can be ok. Just pot them up and plant them deep. They will put out more roots for support, but if you wait, the stem can still be too weak for the support it will need for the weight of the top. You harden off after your last frost. But you can pet them daily, and put a fan on them to help strengthen the stem. You can top those pepper plants, to help them bush out. Top them to those first leaves. Spicy seeds tend to be harder, but you can just put seeds back in those empty spots. That looks like micellium to me, should be fine. The larger plants are probably taking up the nutrition, put them in a bit more nutrients.
