I designed and built the original Buford Bucket Compact Loader. This loader is for specific John Deere garden tractors models. These models include the JD 318, 322, 332, 425, 445, 455, the older X400 and 500 series, and the X700 series. The tractors must have the dual hydraulic outlets.
I grew up on a farm in NW Indiana. I bought a JD 317 and being a farm boy, I wanted a loader for it. A real JD loader was too expensive and most aftermarket "loaders" did not have enough lifting power. So I decided to design a loader that was less expensive, had better lifting capacity and was safer for an average homeowner. The loader will easily lift 500 pounds to a height around 40 inches. Even for a VERY experienced operator like myself, this can be a little dangerous to operate. Any loader tractor needs the proper counter weight.

I have a 4105, I started it up and smelled something electrical burning followed by some black smoke. Shut it off and now it won’t start.
Super helpful and informative, thanks!
I've been having problems with my X738 . Definitely going to test it
Great video my frend. Got me out of a muddle here in England Thank you.
Great video. My x595 had a fully blocked fuel filter, cleaned out and replaced. Thanks for the tip also on priming the pump. 😊
Sure enough. After two weeks of fighting this bastard it was the jumper wire on the democrat seat switch. Damn I hate liberals and their nanny state crap. On the upside all the dust and grease have been cleaned off the engine and all the maintenance is done.
I have a X575 that I inherited when my dad passed. It has the 45 bucket loader on it. I want to change the hydraulic fluid. From what I’m gathering, the fluid that controls all the hydro stuff is from the rear transmission? So when I change the transmission fluid does the hydraulic lines need to be purged for air or anything? Sorry for the dumb question, never owned one of these! 😊
No need to purge from hydraulic lines.
Thanks
No problem
Thanks I’m going threw a voltage problem with the white wire the red I’m getting 12v but only 3 on the white not kicking it in
The white wire receives voltage from the fuel solenoid controller. That is probably your problem.
My x495 is all zip-tied together too
That seems to be a common problem. Both of my X595's were that way.
445 wouldn't start, so I went to KZread. I landed here which inspired me to just pull a full a few plugs off and reseat them...fired right up. Ty
Good video George, Thank for the information.
Thank you.
I have an older X485.I was told I need to unlock the rear differential.Tis because when I turn sharp it continues to move forward.Do you know how I should go about doing this?
Usually backing up will unlock the differential. If that does not work, check the diff lock pedal to be sure it is free.
It also could be the return spring for the diff lock inside the hydro. This world be a major repair.
I am looking for a full suspension seat mount for the john deere 420 garden tractor I just purchased. It currently has the stock metal spring and it doesn't go far enough back, I'm a really big guy 350 lbs.
How do i know if the fuel pump is working?
Thank you so much for the excellent video. Very helpful. I was trying to troubleshoot why my Deere 1445 Front deck tractor would not start, I've been tracing down the fuel system, and came across your video. Sure enough I had one side of the coil / solenoid failed. I followed your Ohm test procedure. I recently ordered new solenoid from Deere dealer, installed, and my machine now runs great. Thank you.
Glad it helped
I was standing on my head with my 9mm wrench to loosen the oil drain valve. Mine uses a 10mm wrench. Not sure if mine has been changed once or something. It’s a 2005 x485. Thanks for the video
I have this exact 317, my RPMs do not kick in under load until the last second. by then my engine is bogged down to stalling. This is on the snowblower attachment. I believe this is a governor problem. Can you show how to adjust the Governor on a 317 kohler twin carburetor?
Does the engine seem to operate OK when it is not under a load.
I have one of these on my 332. Great little bucket. Had not thought about the forks on the outer corners.
The forks are very handy. I made a video of how to make them.
I dont understand what this video is really about.....basic t-shooting, xseries tractors, Diehard jump- pacs, fuse ID or making a video??? Hate to cut on this but not that helpful as I was looking for particular JD x series info n common starting issues. Great as far as everything else goes though👍
I do have other videos of certain models. A general overview would help many people. What X series model?
Thanks mate big help
No problem 👍
Great stuff, thanks for the great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's not clear to me which mechanism is the solenoid valve in this video.
The gold one
Thaks for video .greentigs
Thank you, i blew up one fuel solenoid and did not know why ,, i thought you have pos (white) and neg ( black) red wire did not do anything (i thought) Then it sucked in all good but after 30 seconds boom , i did not know where the red wire went , now i know white is only positive momentary then red stays positive to keep solenoid engaged , so helpfull thanks again
You are welcome.
Great video! Thank you.
very helpful, I have a x595 and use a Multimeter to check the battery , but too check at the 12Volt port is clever. thanks Christian in Germany
You almost have to take the hood off to get to the battery. Or, ground negative lead and use the battery lug on the starter. I was going for easy which was also clever.
@@gotdeeres just wondering if it is correct that the 12 port is still active when the moter is off and the ignition key is also off the tractor?. because my 12Volt post is still on or should I say active
There are two grease points in the back. Not only the drive shaft. But also the U- joint.
I knew that but my mouth was faster than my brain. I saw this error when I was editing and wondered if anyone would catch it.
Do you know the napa # to use for the am131981 ujoint ?. X758 - 60" High Capacity Mower Deck. 3-7
The Napa number is P861. That part is used on MANY JD models.
Great video on cleaning drive shafts, could you do one on changing out universals on drive shafts? I would also like to know if it is to replace the universals on the drive shaft on the X700 series, Deere only sells the whole shaft at about $350.00. I have a John Deere X758 with 1400 hrs.
I have changed universal bearings and it is not that difficult. I will make a video next time I change one.
I have a X585. The battery wasn’t charging when running. I can’t seem to find the voltage regulator to test it. I would charge of the battery and then run it till it quit well. I only ran it for a little bit yesterday, and it totally shut off. The battery is totally fried absolutely zero voltage I noticed that the battery was hot. Any idea what’s wrong. Thank you.
The voltage regulator is part # M97348 $127. It is bolted on to the pedestal. You should be able to see it if you remove the side vent shields. It is about 5" square and has heat sink blades. There is one connector with 4 or 5 wires.
I don't have a John Deere, but a Mustang 2040 skidsteer with the Yanmar 4TNE84 engine. It started to cut out on me and then stopped all together after a minute or so. I tested the wires going it to the Solenoid with a 12 volt light tester. As you explained, the light came on with the white wire for about 2 seconds then went out. The Red also came on but the light went out when the white one did. So, the I bypassed the seat switch as it was the easiest to get to, then the engine ran fine! Thank you for saving a bunch of time & hassle to find the problem.
No problem.

Hey I have a x740 the transmission is slow and weak in reverse and sometimes forward but mainly reverse the fluid level is good and clean just got it at an auction it doesn't look like it has been mistreated runs great any information would be greatly appreciated thanks
How many hours on the tractor? My SWAG is the charge pump pressure is low. Since you have no idea if or when the Hydostat fluid was changed, I would first change the fluid and filter. The tractor comes with Low Vis Hygard, but regular Hygard is also an option for warmer climates. I have discovered that a weak hydro will have increased pressure because of the higher viscosity of regular Hygard. I live near Atlanta and have always used regular Hygard in all of my tractors.
@@gotdeeres if I'm not mistaken around 160 hours the fluid looks very clean I adjusted the rod from the pedal to the transmission it would go really good in reverse but not forward so I adjusted it back the transmission does not make any noise will I have to take it to a dealer to get the pressure adjusted
Will this work if the seat bottoms out. I’m a big guy and want a scissor suspension and John Deere says it can only handle 200 lbs then there are upgraded springs that brings it up to 260lbs but still no good. I figure up grade the springs and then use your trick.
I believe my extra springs will help. I added these to my loader tractor which bounced and I would bottom out. This definitely helped. I am about 200#.
What about getting the rest of the belt around alternator. Taken it off and getting belt back tight
I will add that next time I replace one.
Can you tell what a ctm441 manul is used for, it is on the front of the tm142419 as a reference !
John Deere Component Technical Manual - CTM441 is a manual that provides detailed information on the repair and maintenance of John Deere equipment. It is a component technical manual that covers the following topics: “Engine - 4.5L (276 cu. in.) 6-Cylinder Diesel,”
Do I need this for my x758
I bought x595 brand new in 2001 with loader, plow, mower and still have it today, never let me down.
I agree. I own two of them.
I'm not believing the seat interconnect with the solenoid starting function because I can start the tractor without sitting in the seat. The seat safety switch only matters if the PTO is also engaged.
Oops. As long as the parking brake is ON, the tractor will start regardless if there is an operator in the seat or not. Then seat switch kills the tractor when the parking brake is off and the operator leaves the seat.
Thank you so much for you great videos and explanation. I live in the U.K. and we do not have many professional service centres for John Deere and therefore I have to do as much myself as possible. I have the X595 absolutely love it. Just hope to keep it alive for as long as possible. Your expertise and experience are invaluable. Thank you again. Mark Fisher
I have 2 X595's. Best tractor I have ever owned.
I just got got a x595 and I’m trying to learn everything about it thank you so much for all your advice and advice you are amazing sir
You are welcome.
Hi. New subscriber here. I appreciate the information you give. I just bought an x595 and my question is about the rear three point. Mine has a cat0 top link and cat 1 arms. Is this normal on this tractor? I purchased it used.
The older cat 0 3 point hitches came with a AUC12534 top link. The new Cat 1 hitches came with a AUC12533 that would have a larger CAT 1 pin to connect to Cat 1 equipment.
I have a John Deere x495 that won’t start, I would appreciate any help thanks
Hard to give any advice without the symptoms.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing all this information! Never would've known that it was O ring 113.
JD parts used to actually list the o ring size in the description. I am sure they changed it so you could have 5 times more.
Thank you, I have just bought an X495. This video is GOLD!
Glad to appreciate it.
Hello. I tried sending an email to your brother but it appears the email you have on your page for him is no longer valid. Anyway, I ran across a guy selling a Buford Bucket off of his 455 John Deere and was wondering if that setup would work for my JD X758? If so, would there be anything else I would need to upgrade on my unit? I have the hydraulic diverter valve installed already.
Yes it will work. You will need longer hoses.
Thanks for posting a video on this subject! I currently have an X748 and an X728 as well as a 4200 project tractor. I've had my X728 since new with the 45 loader on it, and I always say that my dealer may have shimmed it when it went out the door because it has tons more hydraulic pressure than my X748 which I found a good deal on it used a few years ago. I since switched my 45 loader to the diesel and changed my relief valve as called for, but I did not shim it. It does not run the loader nearly as effectively as my old X728 with well over 3500 hours did. So I'm glad I found your video, I think I will shim it soon. I just got a gauge for them so I will take preliminary readings on both units to see what their output is. Thanks, Kevin.
I would test the pressure on the 728 to see exactly how much pressure it has. The factory spec is around 1000 psi.
@@gotdeeres 1000 psi on the x728, 900 psi on the X748. The shims I have are tiny little medallions with no center hole though. Makes me think I got the wrong shims.
Thanks for your help! The shutoff gas lever for the x595 has a phillips set screw on top that i had to loosed before the lever would turn.
The TM does not say the screw needs to be loosened, but I always do.
Same for me
Hi George, I am testing all safety switches so I started by bypassing all the safety switches by hotwiring from ignition to solenoid. Runs fine, but I pulled the solenoid, tested and replaced it. Now, I turn the key and the plunger retracts for a couple seconds. So, while hot-wired I cannot reinstall the new solenoid because when it reextends, it will kill engine. But why, if the seat switch is bypassed?
What is your tractor's model number?
