John Deere X485 Fluid Changes & Maintenance 101
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This video shows how to change the fluids on a used John Deere X485 I just purchased. The video is for owners who want to understand the basics of maintaining a John Deere tractor. Much of what I discuss will apply to other models.

Glad it was helpful.
I did not know about the driveshaft zirc fitting, or that the thermostat needed to be open to change the coolant. Thanks for the video!

You would learn about the driveshaft grease zerk when you need to buy a new driveshaft for $400. I bought two tractors with 500 hours that NEVER had the u-joint greased. Luckily they have held up but I do grease them regularly. Much more than recommended.
I was standing on my head with my 9mm wrench to loosen the oil drain valve. Mine uses a 10mm wrench. Not sure if mine has been changed once or something. It’s a 2005 x485. Thanks for the video
Thank you Mr.Liskey. Great video.

Thank you too!
There are two grease points in the back. Not only the drive shaft. But also the U- joint.

I knew that but my mouth was faster than my brain. I saw this error when I was editing and wondered if anyone would catch it.
I have a X575 that I inherited when my dad passed. It has the 45 bucket loader on it. I want to change the hydraulic fluid. From what I’m gathering, the fluid that controls all the hydro stuff is from the rear transmission? So when I change the transmission fluid does the hydraulic lines need to be purged for air or anything? Sorry for the dumb question, never owned one of these! 😊

No need to purge from hydraulic lines.
Can you point out more specifically where that grease fitting is by the drive shaft? I have an x585 and removed the mower deck. I have no idea where to start looking for that fitting so I can grease it. BTW, I also have a JD 4500. It needs grease there by the drive shaft) too and I did not know it. Sure enough, it failed and that was a VERY expensive repair.

The driveshaft has a universal joint that connects to the transmission. The grease zerk is on the inside of the u-joint. Since you have an X585, there is also a driveshaft from the transmission to the mechanical front wheel drive unit. There is a u-joint at each end of this driveshaft which ALSO needs to be greased. You can see the grease zerks and these are much easier to grease. The u-joint zerk at the transmission driveshaft is MUCH more difficult to locate. I usually use my finger to locate it and turn the driveshaft to be able to connect a grease gun. I have a special NEEDLE grease tip that I occasionally have to use. I have an X740 that has never had the u-joint greased because the angle of the zerk is WRONG. I will be removing fender deck to correct the problem and finally get it greased.

@@gotdeeres Immensely helpful. Thank you so much.
What about the trans-axle dipstick that's in the front on the right side. Do you drain it from the front also? or only the back.

The X485 does not have a trans axle in the front. That would be on a X585 tractor and other tractors with MFWD (4X4).
How many hours on this unit?

The hourmeter did not work, so I added a Hobbs one. No idea how many total hours.
