Question from a new audiofile! So I'm using two subs to a mono amp. They handle 500w RMS and they are 4 ohms resistance each. So I'm wiring them in parallel to the outputs on the amp so they are now 2ohms of resistance total, and the amp is capable of 600w RMS at 2ohms. So would my equation would be square root of 600x2? Which results in 34.64v

You have to look at it as what are you getting for your money? A sub that's engineered and designed to be absolutely insane or one of these slapped together with posts anyone can buy of the web subs from all of the hyped up companies flooding the market. The solox in my opinion is better than all of the sundown, skar, sound cubed, ect. Most of which are the same thing different logo. The solox is a beast and will take far more clean power than what is rated. For all the kicker haters. Lol what a solox 15 did against all the 18's in the one sub challenge. On half the power of the leading 18. For real world results I'll use my setup for an example. One L7X 12 in a custom enclosure posted by a rockford fosgate t1500-1bdcp. Under powered it does a 147db on music in my suv. No burp. Kicker4Life

3db is equivalent to doubling electrical power but sonic power is something like 10 db. I wouldn't worry about that so much at 20 hz unless this is for a home theater. Sure is a real thing. The real issue is the box isn't the only variable there and with a driver being left static, you miss the coupling of the suspension itself and how that ties to what a proper enclosure is for the driver to perform a certain way. A W6 10 would do it differently and so on. When purchasing a subwoofer, you have to come with your min-max info. What is the amount of space you can use? What is the amount of money you have for the whole system? What is the electrical constraints? If you are unwilling to spend money on the power, we know right away you have to go efficient for output. If you come with the idea you are not trying to break the windshield but want fidelity, we know we don't have to have the biggest box for sure. If you say you listen to classic rock, we can attribute the style of bass as punchy which helps us pick the enclosure type. All those things have zero to do with a driver. I would never try to go so small on a box without visiting the idea of response curves on a smaller driver. I would build a test specimen using the DATS to get the T/S data from the free air of a driver. Then I would model a .707 sealed enclosure with that data in modeling software (I use BB6 Pro). I would then place that enclosure in the environment at approximately the same position the final product would be in. I would then sweep and register the output at the listening position. Taking that data, I would model enclosures with different woofers to find the best fit. Lots of work but you get what you give.
