    I want you to test an atg 1600 watt.. audio to go equipment.. it was like 80 bucks and it sounds good when using two subs... I would love to know the capabilities of what it's putting out but of course ...you have the dyno bro... I'm really curious what that amp puts out for wattage... it seems to be pretty aggressive in the car... and I've had a lot of amps

    My brother had an amazing Phoenix Gold system back in the day. Four XS2500's powering 4 PG X-Max 12's in a custom enclosure and 2 more XS2500's for mids and highs. He spent a good $10k on the system. In a 95 Thunderbird not setup for spl it hit 149.9 in the only competition he ever took it too.

    Stinger and Recoil are the 2 best budget amps on the market. Stinger tends to make rated or over wattage. While Recoil tends to make under or rated. Reliability on both is really unknown at this point. Looking at the boards in my opinion I think the Stinger might have the slightly better design and reliability but I guess I’ll find out I have a Stinger 1500.1 and a Recoil DI1200-4 currently playing.

    Ok. So this video is a PERFECT illustration of something which really makes me scratch my head. I have been watching your videos and Big D's videos for quite a while now. And I have seen you guys test and review a significant number of budget friendly amps which pump out a ton of watts per dollar. Some of these are truly amazing performers. So here's my head scratcher. How is it that these small little amps can pump out 300-1000 watts but these little mini amps which people buy to drive a small desktop stereo struggle to even make 40 or 50 watts? I mean seriously...it's not like the technology isn't there. Obviously, if Stinger or Boss or Ignite or NVX or you-name-it can make little lunchbox sized amps which can put out literally hundreds of watts, why can't these little mini amps do the same? I'd even pay a little more, say two hundred or higher for a mini amp that could really pump out the power. Now...here's an even BIGGER head scratcher. Home stereo/theater amps. To get one which puts out say 300 watts per channel will set you back well in excess of $1k. Meanwhile Down For Sound makes an amp which delivers 300 watts in stereo for less than $300!!! What in the HELL is up with THAT?

  • @imawesomeyourenot

    @imawesomeyourenot

    No head scratching at all really. If you pay attention to the internals of all the types of amps you mention, youll see that many are completely different designs from each other, as well as different places of manufacture, components and specs with varying degrees of quality. Usually smaller amps regardless of power are not going to have quite the quality internals (there are exceptions) and also are only going to be able to have certain limitation with those internal components. Most (newer) small amps are "brazilian" design, which are a completely different way of producing the same watts as many other much larger amps. As well, the Brazilian amps are rarely known for their sound quality. Also, if youve watched Big D's vids and any other dyno tests, youll see that even though many of the Brazilian as well as normal amps (class A, A/B, D, ect) put out 'X' amount of power, but with box rise, amperage loss, and heat transfer, and other factors, youll rarely get that amount of power from amps in general (again, there are exceptions). As well, dynos are generally used with resistive loads, these loads are pulling what the amp can deliver. Music is full of different frequencies, a low bass note may draw 1200w for a split second, but most regular notes will only require 150+ -. As far as home amps, their designs are all over the place, with the general acceptance that "more expensive is better" (as usual, there are exceptions there as well lol). But most are "only" putting out a few hundred watts because a home system has VERY different requirements than a car environment. Also, the requirements of the home speakers themselves rarely requires and over abundance of power (although, that trend has been changing in the last handful of years as well). Also (again!), a matter of taste as well, many home theater guys are obsessed with the "sound" (or lack there of) of amps and home components (also aesthetic design)....either they shouldnt hear them at all, or they should have the impression of whatever sound said person enjoys. Far too many home theater guys are obsessed with graphs as well, they are "listening" with their eyes, and tricking their ears into thinking they can hear the difference in the slightest nuance of frequency changes...completely ridiculous for the most part lol. Oh, and those guys often listen to terrible music (LOL, just kidding...kinda). "Only" the Cerwin Vega guys expect their gear to be cranked as loud as possible all the time lolol. Regardless of all of that, while the technology may be there, the various reasons they dont do what youd expect are great, with all kinds of factors as to why.

    That's a LOT of verbiage which doesn't really address my fundamental question. I'll make it simpler. Car Amp Manufacturer A makes an amp that generates gobs of power into the most difficult loads all the way down to half an ohm and works reliably under extreme conditions (in a car) and sells it for say, $500. Home Audiophile Manufacturer A makes an amp that generates say 300 watts into a 4 ohm load and charges $3000. Makes no sense. If it can be done for less, why doesn't SOMEONE do it and make a TON of money? And don't talk to me about SQ. I've heard PLENTY of car audio systems which sound absolutely pristine. Audiophile quality.

  • @imawesomeyourenot

    @imawesomeyourenot

    @@MeTuLHeD Just because its "wordy" and doesnt make sense to YOU, doesnt make it inaccurate. If you think itll do well, then start a company and do it!! Its your market to lose!!! lol Kidding aside, often times thousands of watts arent needed in home audio...whats to understand? Other than subwoofers, home components dont need kilowatts of power. Some "simpler" things have trickled into home audio, but in general its not necessary. Different manufacturing processes, different requirements of electronic components, different standards of production ect. Many high end home amplifier (as well as speaker) manufacturers in addition to using as top quality electronics as they can get also hand build, spend gobs of money on top audio engineers, R&D, proprietary designs (almost NO home manufacturer has the same "looks" or designs as another), and are made in very limited quantities. Also, why make something cheap when you can market it as "the most expensive and best" and charge as much as people are willing to pay? These guys will spend $5,000-$10,000 on up for a single speaker, just because they can. The car audio market and home market are not the same lol. And you will never hear a car audio system that will come close to the most high end home system. Its practically impossible. Even the best SQ car will never be able to have the same qualities as a fully treated room and dsp, eq'd, and precisely aligned home stereo system. If you've never heard (or seen) a several hundred thousand dollar home system, you will never understand. Money foolishly spent to me at a certain point but nonetheless, awe inspiring is putting it mildly. And rarely are home speakers designed as lower ohm loads than 8/4, its not needed. So why design an amp that needs to carry that low ohm load? When you drop the load on a car amp, the sound quality will suffer, and the wasted efficiency and power is just generating heat, and shortening the components lifespan as well. Home amplifiers dont need to do that, and many are also high current.... thats a whole 'nother "overly wordy" explanation that you probably wont like either, so no point in going into it.

    @@imawesomeyourenot Don't get pissed dude. We're just having a discussion on the internet, not fighting in a death match. I have been an audiophile for years and have a relatively expensive home system. No. Not a $5k per speaker system. But still a VERY nice system. Good separates. Good speakers. A state of the art sub. So I am not uninformed or inexperienced. I have been to at least a dozen high end audio shows and have heard everything you can imagine from 500 dollar power amps to 10 thousand dollar power amps. Blah blah blah. That is still not really relevant to my question. My premise is extremely simple and doesn't require a ton of caveats. Car audio power amps perform well. The good ones sound pretty decent. I would say they reproduce music at least as well as most mid tier home stereo components that I have heard. Indeed, better than some. And my conviction still stands. If a car audio manufacturer can make a truly high performance amp which delivers a lot of watts per dollar, there is no reason a home audio manufacturer could not do the same. It's purely logical. And for the record, if the high end audio manufacturers are charging high prices because people are willing to pay it, then they aren't delivering value. They're selling mystique.

    @@DIYAudioGuy you should do a video on regrets and the rabbit hole you may pursue to get what you already bought to work.

    Everybody wanted to run Streetwires wire, and they dominated the IASCA judging lanes, but it was expensive stuff. Phoenix Gold was the cheap stuff you bought when you couldn't afford Streetwires Scosche EFX was the cheaper stuff you bought when you couldn't afford Phoenix Gold. And Stinger was the really cheap stuff you bought when you couldn't afford Scosche!

    Am I crazy or does that look a lot like a Audio Legion 700?

    You are crazy. It doesn't look like the audio legion externally and it also does not look like the audio legion internally.

    I don't believe so on this one. I believe they designed it, obviously using Chinese parts

    It's designed by David Chao in the USA but it's built in China for labor savings of course.

    Good idea or not? I want this for my Fosgate P3 D2 in a ported enclosure, it's rated for 600 rms so I'm hoping I'll be able to run the Amp around 75-80% so it doesn't struggle. I bought the sub in Sept 2016, wrecked the ride in Jan 2017. Been on the self since, face up, still in the enclosure. Is it still going to be good to go? I had just broken it in when I wrecked.
