    Great video! 👍👌 For beginners who are new to design software and want to build a ported subwoofer I would always recommend to make the port length adjustable and test for correct tuning frequency with impedance test to correct port size or length before they make the final finish. It’s way easier and faster to make this possible if using pvc pipe ports.

  • @Jairm_08
    @Jairm_084 ай бұрын

    I built a box very similar in size except I used 3" pvc pipe at 10", I also doubled up the front..1.5" total. All 6 sides have a 45° bevle on all sides plus 45° cut off on inside. And the one thing I did was to the inside of the box that I don't believe I've ever seen done but I think that it might have worked well because it is by far the loudest cheap $40 Jensen 12-in subwoofer I've ever heard. I have to give thanks to DIY audio guy I have learned quite a few of those " well darn thar would have been a lot easier" things that I did not know about building boxes from your videos. I've been a carpenter for 20 years and it's always the little tricks of the trade that go the farthest

    It sure is fun to watch you build these things. Maybe it didn't come out 100% perfect, but it looks great, and beings it's a car sub, those things usually get pretty beat up pretty well anyway. I can tell you this, if I DO build a sub for my Rogue, I'm NOT covering it with vinyl! :)

    I'm a big believer in dados and rabets for all of your joints. I believe they creates a stronger joint and provide better air tight seals. The difficult part is making the adjustments in calculating the air volume. I'd like to see you go through the steps including the calculation adjustments when making a box in that way

    Hello, thanks for all your uploads very helpful! I have a quick question, I installed (2) JL 8W7AE-3 subs in a ported enclosure tuned to 37 hz (JL 1200/1 amp at 1.5 ohm). Sounds good, and the output it about right where I need it to be although I could go for a slight increase in output if I could. I really want something really accurate, really "punchy" and tight. I'm thinking about switching to a sealed enclosure and am ok loosing a bit of output doing so but to offset this was going to add (2) more 8" subs for a total of (4) JL 8W7AE-3. I am assuming going to sealed I would loose about 20% output over ported but I have no idea. Am I getting carried away? What would you do in this situation? Thanks again for your videos!

    You really want to go more like 15-16 sq in the port per cube.. you’re software won’t model this but it will really make a difference in the sound quality on notes just under and over the tune.. it won’t be deeper per day but to the ear it will sound very much deeper and you will actually gain a little spl in doing so. That box looks to be 2 maybe 2.25 cubes.. port should easily be wider . Only prefab companies use that 11-12sq port cause they trying to market you a box at low tune big volume in a small actual box size.. this is why you won’t find one custom shop anywhere doing ports this small.. hell gately got a few boxes they are pushing 18sq in the port.. Also if you’re a little low on power you upside the box.. upside the port and you’ll give less suspension to the driver and this gain sound wo having to apply more power.. on issue is if you do upside and send all she’s got you’ll run out of mechanicals on a lot of drivers that don’t have very big diameter (not deep wide like entire magnet is the diameter of the basket wide) and then a very tight gap to apply sufficient electromechanical to limit the pole from bottoming out Nice box though.. my carpet and wrapping skills are not that good either so I use stains and marble paints and epoxy’s to finish my boxes lol..

    @@DIYAudioGuy I’m not sure what you’re saying here cause pretty sure you had a typo in the quoted response. I’m not educated enough to understand the math behind how port areas effects something tbh.. but hat I have done is been in car audio for the better part of about 30 years now almost. 20 of those building custom boxes that for the most part were trash tbh.. What I do know.. port area is a product of volumn of the box.. mechanical movement (xmax) if the speaker and I’m sure it has many other variables.. mathematically.. What I do know.. all the custom box builders and high end pre fab box builders who make custom boxes use around 14.5-16 square in the port on all the boxes they make. Won’t lie I don’t know why I’m not that smart.. when I need to build a box I look to these companies and people as to what they are doing and use the same port area.. the general rule I think we all know is 12sq per cf. I spend a lot of time on gately site as a custom builder and all thier boxes are 15.4ish or better.. I don’t question it. They know more then I do and have way more resources and spent way more money they I ever will into that development. I soft copy a lot of what other do,. Modify it to what I know a specific driver will do or wants to do.. based on not just xmax although that is a huge factor when it comes to port area.. the more air it can move inside the box the bigger t the port needs to be to allow that air to move properly.. What I do know.. when I follow the custom box builder rule of thumb.. which is 16sq in the port as a baseline I’m able to as a custom box builder get performance from setups that Rival ones costing 4-5-6c as much or more.. I don’t go below 14.5 cause I don’t see any of the companies do this.. on extreme xmax spl only type drivers I’ve gone as high as 22sq.. My daughters car has subs per manufacture are if I remember 11.5sq.. her box is .5 cube below cause I couldn’t fit bigger.. built at 16sq.. tune to 33 and running off 1050 watts of what could take easily 1609 watts.. meters mid 40’s.. Just finished a reinstall a few weeks ago.. couple skar sdr 12’s on a planet Audio (Walmart amp more or less) my box eBay head unit and in that sub it’s hitting idk now the meter score but it’s above what my daughter care is by ear and it’s not egged close. So it’s upper 40’s on about the same power of 1100watts as I measured from it. In subs that can only take maybe 1200 ish. Recommended for like 11. Something sq and I got them at 15.6 sq I’m pretty damn good at box building.. even better at system designs given whatever the budget is to get the most out of everything. Understand watts is a measurement of power not sound and that much of that watts goes to heat in the amp and the subs.. I’m pretty good at getting sound not heat.. damn good at maximizing drivers based on the box I put them in.. 15-16sq js where you wan to be for almost everything.. this 12sq bs is from companies selling packages units at that 12sq cause it makes the box smaller and easier for them to sell to the masses.. even a company as reputable as kicker does this.. most are way worse.. qbomb has not issues selling to a claimed tune at a claimed volume but if you calculate that box out they post a his as gross not net. They are tuned 5-10hrx higher and have horrible port area usually 1” wide ports into the night of the box cause it makes the mix smaller. People think they are good cause they are Loud playing this or that. No understanding that it could be loud playing everything and it’s not certain songs they don’t have base.. it’s the box that can’t perform for that base.. The main reason most custom builders use a tune around 30-33 is cause you can make that box perform from 25ish to 80 wo issue.. There is a lot to box building and winisd is great for calculating port noise etc., it’s horrible at about everything else.. unless you get really into the weeds with sound staging in a home theater application.. actually what it was designed for.. So although it’s a feee software able to help you build a sub box. It’s designed for home theater. It is unable to calculate the +12 db rise and resonance frequency of a vehicle.. a free app on Apple is better for that then that software is.. and way easier to use if you use sites from companies like gately and others as a benchmark first.. Lost of better software out there.. if you use a box from a company already known. Modify the let’s items to what is needed you’ll get 100x better performance in the end. You did a video ages ago on best prefer.. used the skar box. That is a 12sq box the box calculations are off a little as they cheat the net vs gross with some bs design stuff through sacrificing the port area.. Don’t take my word.. take any sub you’ve ever tested.. rebuild that box and use 14.5-15sq in the port.. go 10% larger in recommended volume and tune it to 33.. forget what the paperwork says.. Do this and then you’ll understand just how much port area means to not just spl but also range of solid as well as depth if sound..
