My GGpa is front and center, Leroy J Bowen from Columbus, Ohio. They were the ambassador singers for Carter wrightt during WWII. There’s not a lot of information published. There’s minimal info at the Columbus Public Library but there are a couple of cool photos!

Masterful. Alone on a stage, with a live orchestra, and every torchy phrase authentic.

The story of "Bacon Fat" seems to be true but not complete in "Testimony", Robbie Robertson's detailed autobiography. "Bacon Fat" was proposed by Garth Hudson to Duff Roman for recording by Levon and The Hawks on Roman records, Toronto, Canada, (1963 or 6?). Robertson rightly, IMHO, credits Garth and himself as having written "Bacon Fat". This earlier "Bacon Fat", written in 1956 by Andre Williams, was recorded as a talking Blues for Fortune Records. It became a top-ten hit at that time. Now it's likely Williams' "Bacon Fat" may have been the inspiration for Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson, who were students of the old Blues and early Rock played along the Chitlin' Circuit. But comparing the two "Bacon Fat" tunes, it's clear: 1. by the different lyrics; 2. by the Hawks' organ & guitar versus Williams' sax instrumentation; 3. and by the beat; that Williams' "Bacon Fat" and the Hudson-Robertson "Bacon Fat" are different compositions related mainly, perhaps only, by sharing the same title. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

This might be a generational thing, but in my day we would meet a lady halfway instead of letting her wander in the dark searching. If she stop to talk to a willow tree you know you’re running late and should have left the house a bit earlier or phoned to say so.

Goodman, Hampton, Wilson and Krupa. Bar none, the best quartet every. So may great musicians came out of the 20s and 30s there is no doubt and I admire them all but this quartet is it !

Murray McEachern's smooth, Dorsey-like trombone is an unusual but welcome voice for the start of a Goodman record. Also, note Allen Reuss' nicely audible guitar in that first chorus and the last 8, which ends in an unexpectedly soft and subtle manner.

First time I heard it. If any of you like this song you will probably also like "In the still of the Night" by The Five Satins and "Earth Angel" by The Penguins or the version from Back to the Future, which is also great.
