One Mint Julep
written by Rudolph Toombs
performed by The Clovers
recorded in New York, 19 December 1951
heard here off the 1985 complication "Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Volume 1: 1947-1952" (Atlantic 81293-1-F)
From the "adventures in record collecting" files, I present this, to my knowledge, previously unreleased version. Nowhere in Peter Grendysa's liner notes is there any hint that something other than the #2 R&B classic was contained therein. I have the double LP and 1985 CD versions of this collection. The 1991 expanded box set version (8 volumes instead of 7) has the correct version. "One Mint Julep" isn't the only oddity found in this collection but, that is only contained in the 1985 CD version and not on the LP or box set version. Furthermore, the 1991 edition booklet points out that, "in previous editions, wrong takes were used on some songs. In this edition, the proper takes have been used in all cases."
Was this version of "One Mint Julep" released someplace before? Speaking of any other "wrong takes," does anyone know of any others from this collection? That is what the comments are for but, for now, enjoy this undocumented oddity from the vault.
