45 RPM: André Williams - Bacon Fat (original Fortune version)

Музыка

Bacon Fat
written by André Williams
performed by André Williams & his New Group
originally issued as Fortune 831, in October 1956
After making waves in Detroit, Fortune 831 was picked up for national distribution, by Columbia, and released, as Epic 5-9196 (in December 1956). As luck would have it, Jack and Devora Brown sent CBS an alternate take. So, it was the alternate take of "Bacon Fat" that made the Billboard R&B Top-10 (#9) and all future Fortune pressings contains the hit version. The first pressings contain this version that, to my knowledge, is found nowhere else.

The story of "Bacon Fat" seems to be true but not complete in "Testimony", Robbie Robertson's detailed autobiography. "Bacon Fat" was proposed by Garth Hudson to Duff Roman for recording by Levon and The Hawks on Roman records, Toronto, Canada, (1963 or 6?). Robertson rightly, IMHO, credits Garth and himself as having written "Bacon Fat". This earlier "Bacon Fat", written in 1956 by Andre Williams, was recorded as a talking Blues for Fortune Records. It became a top-ten hit at that time. Now it's likely Williams' "Bacon Fat" may have been the inspiration for Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson, who were students of the old Blues and early Rock played along the Chitlin' Circuit. But comparing the two "Bacon Fat" tunes, it's clear: 1. by the different lyrics; 2. by the Hawks' organ & guitar versus Williams' sax instrumentation; 3. and by the beat; that Williams' "Bacon Fat" and the Hudson-Robertson "Bacon Fat" are different compositions related mainly, perhaps only, by sharing the same title. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Fortune Records was an interesting little label from Detroit, and pre-Motown to boot (Fortune opened up in 1954, while Motown got started in 1959.) The biggest hits Fortune Records had was "Village Of Love" and "Mind Over Matter" in 1962 by Nathaniel Mayer and Nolan Strong and The diablos respectively.
