45 RPM: The Youngtones - Patricia

Patricia
written by Ben Smith and Aaron Handel
performed by The Youngtones
released as X-Tra 110, in January 1958
From Coney Island, New York, The Youngtones were Johnny Marsi (lead), Gilbert Rivera (1st tenor), Joe Crespo (2nd tenor), Willie Rivera (baritone) and Louis Figueroa (bass). This was their second of three for Ben Smith's X-Tra Records and their best known song.
Old record collectors will understand that mastering for 45 RPM in the 1950s were not quite standardized. Depending on how low budget the pressing plant was, they might still be using transcription cutting styli instead of microgroove cutting heads. So, in these cases, you get a constant "hiss" when playing these records back with a standard LP needle. Collectors that run the Sun label, for example, will notice this on pre-1956 pressings.
Now, we shall see what KZread does with the processing of this video. You will notice that this song plays twice. The first time (0:00) is a raw transfer with a 78 stylus. The second time (2:10) is with a LP stylus. Do you notice a difference? The processing here might render this comparison a bust but, it is most noticeable at the end during the fade out.
