1 - Kreator, 2 -- Sodom, 3 - Destruction. I agree, the Destruction EP is a bit.... scrappy. Reject Emotions is cool but the widdly guitar thing is redumbnant and like you I never thought Mad Butcher was close to being their best. The Sodom ep was a huge shock on release because it was so much more 'professional' than 'Obsessed', all three songs are great but it still can't match the Kreator EP. Flag of Hate is good, Take their Lives is killer but Awakening of the Gods is an absolute diamond. This, Pleasure to Kill and Renewal (I know) are the peaks of the Kreator discography for me.
Loving your taste, Rob! Consider joining my private metal community - would love to have you among us! 😊👊🤘 skool.com/metal
There has to be some reason why so many EPs are great, you could extend this to 'Mad Locust Rising' by Agent Steel, 'Warhead' by Venom and 'Haunting the Chapel' by Slayer...
I only heard THE PLASMATICS version of 'The Damned' last year, it's pretty good and there's a video for it which is quite cool too.
Nice one mate, I have it on Higher Roller rec on a coloured variant ( can't remember which one lol). Also have that cassette box set they did of all the early albums
Hey there! Yes, I have a HRR coloured vinyl too. Blue, maybe? Not entirely sure. That cassette box - is that on Darkness Shall Rise or some similar title?
@PossessedByMetal666 yes mate, DSR - I have a few cassette box sets on that label, they are total quality 👌
They look really nice. I like the fact the tape shells are opaque. Transparent shells somehow don't seem 'proper'. 🤔
Yes! EPs in the 80s... classic stuff - Haunting the Chapel, Expurse of Sodomy, Mad Locust Rising, etc etc... killer tracks!
Hell yeah! If you haven't already, you should check out my video on the 'big three' of German thrash EPs. You'll find an onscreen link at the end of this Destruction vinyl video. 👊
@@PossessedByMetal666 Got it cued up ready for my lunchbreak! :)
Awesome! You are exactly the person I made that unpopular video for. 😆😆
Fantastic album, but Infernal Overkill shades it for me.
Hey Rob! You know, it's funny - I like Infernal Overkill, but have never loved it. Love the cover, though, obviously!
@@PossessedByMetal666 Yeah, awesome cover. I had a really bad I.O. T-shirt that I think I got from Shades back in the 80s, managed to replace it when I saw them last year. I think it's partly the production of Eternal Devastation, it's soo scratchy... if it had the same sound as I.O. it would probably be closer, but I still think I.O. would win for me. Maybe it depends when you hear them? Cos being very old I heard all the thrash albums (well not ALL, but all the obvious ones) as they came out, which is maybe why my favourite albums are all debuts, seconds or possibly third releases.
I think Brazil and thrash metal got together like bangers and mash.
Hehe, ain't that the truth, Marc! Hope you're splendidly well. 😊👊🤘
I´ve never seen this pressing of the album, thank you for showing it! Yeah, old Brazilian records... I´m glad I still have my old Cogumelo versions of the Sepultura, Sarcofago and Mutilator records. Fun fact on the "Eternal Devastation" tour. Drummer Tommy was already out of the band and Chris Witchhunter (RIP) played that tour. The tour was called "Hell Comes To Your Town" and Rage and Kreator were part of that. In 2001 they did a "Hell Comes..." part 2 with Kreator, Sodom and Destruction...
Wow! Thanks for this info about the Eternal Devastation tour! I never knew that. We need more awesomely well informed folk like you in my Possessed By Metal VIP community over on Skool. 😊👊🤘
I loved his music, and honestly this interview touches my heart. I believe he was a gentle, and kind soul.
I'm so happy this interview resonated with you, Kate. :)
Such a cool interview!! As a massive Slayer fan, hearing this that I've never heard is awesome!! My love for Slayer will never fade!
Glad you're loving it, Alice! 😊👊🤘
8:17
The guitarist he was referring to at 6:30 was Paul Tobias, I think
Ah, thank you!
Never heard this. Thank you!
You're welcome! No-one in the world ever heard this before, because it's my digitised personal cassette tape. :) I also uploaded a second part of this interview in a private area just for my Possessed By Metal VIP community members. 👊😊🤘 www.skool.com/metal
Bob Halligan Jr
Thanks Christopher! :)
Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore,Jake E Lee, Vivian Campbell,Zakk Wyld
Thanks Will, great list. Vivian Campbell is one i had criminally forgotten! Craig Goldy too.
Tony Iommi, Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhoads, Synyster Gates, James Hetfield
Great list, thanks for sharing, John! If you had to pick one would it be Iommi?
@@PossessedByMetal666 Absolutely.
Invincible Shield might the Metal album of the year for me. So far at least
Yes, I'd be surprised if I like an album more this year! 😊👊🤘
Great story Jason, I was a big fan of Kerrang!, and your reviews from back in the day, as we have similar musical tastes, and I was very much on the thrash/death metal spectrum, so could count on you for whether to buy an album or not, so it's fascinating knowing how you got the gig. As an aside, that Hades 'If at First you don't Succeed' album in the vid, was my 17th birthday present from 2 of my best mates at the time. Loving the channel, I might even join 🤘
Hey there Gareth! It's always lovely to hear from someone who totally knows and feels that era. Glad you like the video! Just so you know - I'm winding down the KZread membership side of this channel, because I started a great metal community on the far superior new platform Skool! Xavier Russell has been posting there, which is so cool to me, because I used to love his reviews before starting to write for Kerrang! myself! If you fancy checking the place out and consider joining the metal merriment, you can do so here: skool.com/metal 👊🤘😊
I like listening to metal from time to time, but I'm no metal head. I have heard some Priest songs before, even learned some on guitar. I liked some of their songs, but I have never bought a full Priest album ... until Invincible Shield ... I love it, from start to finish.
Very cool indeed! And I can understand why. 😊👊🤘 Fave song?
@@PossessedByMetal666 I cannot narrow it down. Invincible shield, Panic Attack, Serpent and King, Crown of Horns, Trial by Fire come to my mind immediately. But the others are growing on me the more I listen to it. I have the version with the three (?) additional songs and even they are not just filler material.
Since I've posted my list on "Possessed by metal -VIP" at Skool I thought I might as well post it in here. Dave Mustaine Wolf Hoffman Paul Quinn Michael Schenker Jeff Waters If you haven't already, check out the Possessed by metal - VIP.
Thank you JD! And it's just as much of a pleasure to see this fine list here, as it was in our VIP group. Glad you're enjoying the place! 😊👊🤘
Uli Jon Roth, Micheal Romeo, Criss Oliva, Akira Takasaki, Micheal Schenker
Criss Oliva! Great call, Paul. 😊👊🤘
Marty Friedman, Jeff Loomis, Andy Sneap, "Fast" Eddy Clarke and Jeff Hanneman. It's actually harder than you think to pick just 5 :/
It so is! I was lucky that I was allowed to get away with six. Thank you for sharing your list!
No order. Malmsteen . Rhoads. Skolnick. Hetfield. Rocky George there was something about his solo's pure feel that spoke to me.. Schuldiner probably the best metal player in the era.
Thanks for the cool list! 😊🤘👊
Muhammed Suiçmez, Tobi Morelli, Dean Lamb
Alexi laiho
Not in order: John Petrucci, Marty Friedman, Dimebag Darrell, Synyster Gates, Yngwie Malmsteen
Thank you for sharing your cool list! 😊👊🤘
Dave Mustaine >>>>>>
A fine axeman for sure!
1. Buckethead 2. Randy Roads 3. Jeff Hanneman 4. Tony Iommi 5. Dave Mustaine
Thank you for the cool list! Although hilariously a KZread option has appeared underneath the list, saying Translate to English 👀😆
Andy LaRocque is my no 1 of all time , followed by Jeff Waters, Steve Vai, Mike Wead and Lars Johansson
Fine choices! Although I can't remember who Mike is. 👀😆🤘
@PossessedByMetal666 He is in King Diamond , played in Candlemass, Hexenhaus etc.
I honestly think KK is a little overrated and crammed along with Glenn, when the main guy behind most of Judas Priest is really Glenn. It's to the point that it blurs the line between guitar duo and Glenn being a de facto lead guitarist and KK just making noise most of the time.
Hey there! Belated thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊👊🤘
I'd have to have more of a think about my top 5 Metal guitarists but I just want to mention Jerry Cantrell. That dude is able to create music and riffs that range from heavy and depressing to melodic and beautiful! I'm putting Jerry's name out there because I've rediscovered Alice in Chains recently and it's been like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in a while!
Thank you! Yes, good call. 😊👊🤘
Yes totally and absolutely. Dirt always gets the mention, but I think "Facelift" has some very interesting things there. Some of the best riffs of his life were on We Die Young, - the chorus riff to It aint like That, and THAT verse riff in Bleed the Freak. Absolute WOW. Then, later in the album you get a stunning sleazy strut of "Put you Down". Real Slash vibe there, downtown badass grooves that, he didnt really return to as the albums progressed. The acoustic side? Jar Of Files. All of it. Eternal.
@@kylereece1979 I don't know if this a controversial opinion or not but Facelift is my favourite Alice in Chains album! In terms of riffs, We Die Young, Man in the Box, It Ain't Like That, Bleed the Freak, Real Thing... The album is filled with riffage just from those songs alone! Sea of Sorrow has probably my favourite Cantrell solo in it, I Can't Remember and Love, Hate, Love are brilliant creepy sounding songs (Love, Hate, Love is my favourite Layne Staley vocal performance), Put You Down sounds like a lost Guns N' Roses song. It's a fantastic album! Dirt is a great album don't get me wrong but there's just something about Facelift that appeals to me more! Saying that every Alice in Chains release is great. All of their albums and the two EPs they released are brilliant!
@@HammerHeart3229 "Put you Down" is interesting. It absolutely Slashes of GnR. But while musically, that song lays in decadent LA sleaze, it is Layne's vocal that is bridging it to the 90s. The verse: You can imagine a vocal from Axl or Seb Bach doing vocal over that riff, like something like Rocket Queen's verses. But Layne's gravely drawl makes it different. We have a musically late 80s kick ass rock with a vocal style that, within a few years would be the voice mimiced by everyone. Facelift is fascinating in that sense. A brilliant album with a couple of styles of its time, as it also is leading into the 90s.
The lead guitarist who gives me shivers down my spine every time is Marty Friedman. Hetfield is a hero of mine too, the riff lord. Dave Murray from Maiden, his lead solos are like honey and just seem effortless when you watch him play. Tom Morello, holy shit. And I'll throw in Eddie Van Halen for just generally being from the Planet Shred.
An excellent list, Mr P. I thank you! Yes, Morello certainly introduced a whole new style to rock.
Not in any order: Dave Mustaine, KK/Tipton, Criss Oliva, Tony Iommi, Mark Reale
Oh wow, yeah, Criss Oliva and Mark Reale are great choices I had shamefully forgotten! Thank you.
There are many. It is a very hard list.
In no particular order - Tony Iommi Adrian Smith Jeff Hannaman Scott Ian Dimebag Darrell Have to agree with you on the Kerry King album; I found it repetitive and boring.
Awesome list - thanks MB! Yes, I do rate Scott's work too. :) Glad you agree on the KK record. A real shame! Had been looking forward to it.
What a garbage list. Imagine thinking Scott Ian and Jeff Hanneman are better than Dave Mustaine. You clearly have no knowledge/appreciation for actual guitar playing/skills
@@somethingelse04 each to their own. I do like Mustaine's playing and song writing but seeing that it's a top five and not top ten, I chose those who inspired me to pick the guitar.
Dear @somethingelse04, if you speak to a fellow metal fan like that again in comments here, I'll ban you. Please learn the difference between your opinion and fact, okay?
🎸 Who are the five greatest metal guitarists in your opinion? List them here! 🤟Check out my Possessed By Metal VIP community at Skool: www.skool.com/metal
They still havent been able to write an album. It is a lost battle at this point in my opinion.
My sister met Slash in Singapore in 1995 in a private event when a local jazz musician hear about his visit here. When slash spotted my sisters navel ring (she was wearing a crop top, it was the 90s every punk gal was in crop) he flashed his and they took a pic together… he was very friendly and obliging …wished I insisted on going then, damn…
Aww, that's nice. Can't beat a bit of navel gazing! 😆👊🤘

The intimidation portion is so familiar. As a guy that’s 6’3” myself, it’s like he’s talking about me. I can totally relate to the guy.
Invincible shield all the way
Love it!
Slash was quiet bitter at this time
I'm sure he knows the end is near band wise
bro made an interview with THE peter steele
Am so pleased to have interviewed the great man on more than one occasion. :)
@@PossessedByMetal666 lucky youuu
Best interview ive ever heard with slash, which says a lot since i was an obssessed fan in my teen and basically ”heard it all”… but i missed this one!
Hey there Stefan, thanks so much for the VERY kind words. I remember really enjoying interviewing Slash and it's been really nice to revisit this tape. I uploaded the second part to my private metal community this week and it turns out that this second segment (recorded on a different tape) is 26 minutes long. Also in the community this week, we've been discussing what would be the ideal tracklisting if the Use Your Illusion albums were squashed into one album! 😄 What's your fave Guns N' Roses song?
@@PossessedByMetal666 i still think way to little focus is put on snakepit, both albums/bands are grea, and its where id like to see slash go back too when it comes to writing music 🙂
I actually think KK's latest opus sounds more like a Priest album than the halford release does
580! Nice
Hated the alternative revolution specially since it never took off or had success like it did in the late or mid 90s. It was a waste that had everyone convinced it would be around for alot longer. But at this period of time one thing was certain - all the alternative scene bands or most of them were alot more sober and with their act together. Axl, his close associates and the record company knew there was alot of competition and that something had to be done to be a step above the game. I dont think Slash had a clue of what was going on at this point. Scott Weiland was kicking these guys asses back in the Revolver days. Theyve been catching up specially Slash and Duff but they should have done this back in the mid 90s- Im sure if that happened this interview would sound different. Its like they used to say "Slash is out of it" lmao
Man slash sounds just like my buddy Sam when he's partially drunk. They have almost the same cadence and flow when they talk, it's kinda weird.
And their names even both begin with S! Sssssuspicious. 🤔🧐😆🤘👊
I remember this time, I was waiting for that new album and it just never came. I finally seen them live for the first time in 2017. I'd love a new record but if it's anything like those new songs that were released I'd rather them just not do it. Hard skool, was the only good song that she like old gunners.
Awesome interview thanks for this. My thoughts at this point on this period of gnr are if only axl could of got things together the way he seems to have over the last few years on the not in this lifetime tour imagine what incredible things they could have done.
You're welcome Tim - and a valid point, I'd say. 😊👊 What's your fave GN'R song?
Why only Axl? I have some where in a Vhs from 94 where Slash and Gilby were telling how they wanted to do "their own thing" for some time and have a solo record...if you were Axl, i wonder how that would feel?
