How I became an 80s rock journalist at age 16

Here's how I started writing for Kerrang! magazine back in the 80s. I also ask the editor of Metal Hammer how someone could get to write for them TODAY. Let's chat about it all in comments!

Great story. Back home in Germany, Metal Hammer mag was my monthly dose of reading about new releases, band stories and annual rankings of favorite musicians, albums etc. That journey started in 1984/85. At the rear end of the 80s, Metal Hammer started to decline and I switched to Rock Hard magazine.

Thanks for sharing! I have pretty strong nostalgia for the UK Hammer circa 1986/87, which is when I started reading it. 😊🤘👊

The late 80's and through the 90's was great for metal journalism. I had a stack of magazines (mostly K!) and kept going back through each copy.

Just seeing that Grindcrusher LP is a real blast from the past, what a complication that was and an intro into some of the earache stuff I wasn't already aware of at the time. And I'd like to hear about that morbid angel interview for one. cheers

Hey there Paul! Ah yes, it's always sad when I break that news to someone who didn't know. That's brilliant that you still have every issue! Most people talk about their K! collections in the past tense. Really glad you like the channel! I suspect you may also enjoy my new brand new community that I only just launched, for people who want to celebrate metal and rock journalism! I've started the process of uploading my digitised Kerrang! interview tapes to an archive in this place. 😲😊 If you fancy checking it out, you'll find it here: skool.com/metal/about 😊👊🤘

Great story Jason, I was a big fan of Kerrang!, and your reviews from back in the day, as we have similar musical tastes, and I was very much on the thrash/death metal spectrum, so could count on you for whether to buy an album or not, so it's fascinating knowing how you got the gig. As an aside, that Hades 'If at First you don't Succeed' album in the vid, was my 17th birthday present from 2 of my best mates at the time. Loving the channel, I might even join 🤘

Hey there Gareth! It's always lovely to hear from someone who totally knows and feels that era. Glad you like the video! Just so you know - I'm winding down the KZread membership side of this channel, because I started a great metal community on the far superior new platform Skool! Xavier Russell has been posting there, which is so cool to me, because I used to love his reviews before starting to write for Kerrang! myself! If you fancy checking the place out and consider joining the metal merriment, you can do so here: skool.com/metal 👊🤘😊

What a stunnin' story! Some Jovial accounts happily recalled here. Great to listen to, and I can only imagine how stoked y'musta been to head home from school that day to have such life altering newz for you like that. I was actually reading thu' a Kerrang issue fromabout Nov'97 inwhich your good self wrote a top article. Twas for the "Out!" section, where you wrote a rollicking account of a night with Tura Satana at a tour party in London. Those two page spreads always looked like a brilliant night out. I love reading things like that, knowing about how fasst tings and scenes change since, and looking back at bands that, didnt really last the test of times since. 'Member Human Waste Project? Tipped for the Top Trumps at the time, but did'nt last. Articles like that are a fascinating snapshot of different eras in rock. Anyhoo, mate, I loved this. I and others here would No Doubt love to hear other stories like this, including yer first cover story, best album you loved reviewing. Or what about the big changes in the late 90s in metal and how they affected the Kerrang format, how the older staff reacted, liked/disliked some of the Nu Metal scene. Id love stories about that. Brilli

Great video Jason! I've followed your metal magazine writings since way back in the early 90s. I've been lucky enough to do some CD reviews for Terrorizer and band interviews for a few metal websites over the years. It's not easy that's for sure. And the market is very different now due to the ease of publishing your own content via social media/websites etc.

Unfortunately I wouldn’t want to work for any British metal mags anymore. You worked there when all the great thrash bands were around. Have you seen the state of Kerrang nowadays?
