Should Non-Metalheads Wear Metal Shirts? | Rockers React

Музыка

From Kanye West rocking a Cradle of Filth tee to Post Malone repping Power Trip, we've seen plenty of mainstream celebs sporting metal shirts in recent years - and some of them definitely aren't actually fans. So we posed the burning question to some of our favorite headbangers: Should non-metalheads wear metal shirts? Pantera's Philip Anselmo plus members of Motionless in White, Babymetal, Beartooth, Knocked Loose, Highly Suspect, Spirit Adrift and more weighed in.

Honestly I've been shamed and mocked so much for liking the music I like and dress the way I do and then it somehow became cool to wear metal shirts and all those a**holes who were bullying me started wearing shirts of my fav bands without caring at all about it and still making fun of me for listening to them...

First off fck those people. 2nd you should feel vindicated knowing your interest and expression are legitimized when even haters become fans. I had a similar circumstance with taking heat for Anime/Video Game shirts at the time being considered nerdy. Now I’m blown away with how popular they have become for the new generation sporting fits I would have been excited to see circulating in my day. Gate keeping isn’t worth it, but I can’t lie I do like testing to see how they stack near my interest.

About 5years ago there was this girl that trained in the gym where I worked, she was flirty and chatty with me so the day she walked in wearing a slayer shirt I thought "holy shit shes wifey" so walked up to her pulling out my earphones as I exclaimed "I'm actually listening to south of heaven right now" and she responds with this totally confused face saying "what are you talking about" I then said slayer pointing at the shirt and she said "oh I just got this in Penny's, is it a band" (pennys is Primarks name in ireland) and without even processing it I blurted out " you dont know who slayer are? So Why the hell are you wearing the shirt???" She was a bit embarrassed and tbh looking back it was stupid of me to call her on it the way I did but in my head I'm like "wow I literally learned how to fight just because of the amount of times assholes and bullies in school would take the piss out of metal attire"

Back in the 80’s & 90’s it meant something. People gave you serious shit for listening to those bands, so it was a way to identify your own. Then, suddenly, every highschool football team was playing Pantera at the rallies and the basketball team was using Enter Sandman. All those guys who gave us shit were suddenly stealing our shit, so it was personal back then.

Hmm this is a difficult one for me. Being from a small village, I was one of the only kids in my area who would wear band tshirts and listen to metal music, and I was bullied for years for it. I still wore them, because I would rather wear my favourite band tshirts than pretend to be into something I wasn't into to blend in, even if it meant getting bullied, because you have a passion and love for that music and you hope to meet others who like them, too. To see people wear it casually without knowing what it is does get to me on that fact alone, even if I don't want it to, especially when it's those same people who would have bullied people like me for it in school. I do get what they're saying, there's not much harm in it and it can just promote them more, but I don't know. It's a weird one.

I was a metalhead and still am for the most part but I would just classify myself as a music lover. I'm 45 and as I got older I opened up myself to different genres of music. 20 years ago I knew absolutely nothing about Motown and 60s r&b or doowop. Im here today to tell you I love that old school r&b. It has it's place in music and doesn't try to be anything different than what it is... Anyway what I originally was going to say is I used to buy albums when I was younger based on the name of the band and their artwork on the album cover. Not all the time. That is how I found soad from their name and first album cover with the hand. Knew absolutely nothing about them, turned them on and they fkn blew my mind. If I can do that,I think it's fine to wear a cool looking metal shirt. Then maybe just maybe they'll get turned on to the music. It's a bit of a reach,I know.

I get a little upset when I see someone with a band shirt that I like, and they don't listen to the band. It's not because I care that they are posers, or don't listen to the same music as me, but it's because I thought I had an icebreaker to meet a new friend. As I grew older I started getting into hip hop for 3 years straight after living with my mom in the city, eventually came across city morgue around 2018 after I moved away, They got me back into the genre. Started listening to black sabbath, anthrax, and toxic holocaust around a month ago.still listen to hip hop, but Im more of a thrash rap listener now. Brings back memories writing this man, hoping to pick guitar back up after a year or so of putting it off. I always made it a rule for myself to personally not wear band shirts if artist I haven't listened to, as well as now. If I wear a band shirt it's after giving them serious listens to. Honestly even with rappers I never rep their merch without actually listening to them. Rock on y'all 🔥

I look at it this way, when I was a kid and one of the ways I got into certain bands was because of artwork whether it be their t-shirts or album covers. There was no internet there for me to search these bands and listen to their music online, all I had was metal magazines showing me pictures of bands and showing the artwork. So I think that today for a pop star or a so-called celebrity wearing a metal t-shirt, if a fan of theirs is even casually interested in metal sees that t-shirt and gets an idea to go on the internet and search this band out find out about them listen to them and then become a fan the more power to them! Sure it's annoying when a non fan of metal only wears the T-shirt because the artwork is cool, but the exposure can possibly lead to more rewarding things for someone else.

Also, it's to me, at the very least, disappointing to walk up to someone because you see they're wearing a T-shirt of a band/singer/fandom/whatever that you like, happy that you can talk to them about something that you think you both like, only to hear, "oh, I just wear this because it looks cool". It's very different when they don't know that it represented the band you liked/fandom you're a part of, and then get curious and actually wanna learn more about it. _Those_ people I'm much less bridge troll-y about. The thing is that a lot of us grew up getting beaten and bullied regularly and relentlessly for being into those bands growing up, and to see those people take our passion and use it for a fashion statement is like re-opening old wounds. If they grew to like it, cool. We have something in common. But if they still hate the music but sport the merch, like...why? There's plenty of edgy looking shit they could wear, why choose to wear something you actively dislike? It's literally just surface level fashionista crap which is exactly what punk and metal are the antithesis of. It's like our scene is being appropriated by the people who embrace everything we oppose. No, it's not LIKE that. It IS that. If someone wants to change and become a more accepting person and they dig the music or can at least respect people who do, I'm all for welcoming them with open arms. But if they wear the attire of music they actively hate, then wtf are they even doing?

I recall reading an interview with Sum41, the punk band, who got to meet their idol Kerry King, they said "We weren't sure if he would smile or kill us". Another clip where they're practicing backstage and drowning out Metallica, and Hetfield won't go ask them to turn it down so they can practice too. Full disclosure have more than one Metallica shirt for every day of the week and a Slayer shirt or two also :) Wearing a shirt is your personal advertisement for the band, if you can't make a good ad and represent the product, you probably shouldn't wear the shirt.

If the posers wanna spend 20 bucks for a t-shirt let them. Someone benefits from that money, either the band directly or indirectly or a manufacturer somewheres down the chain. Plus it increases metal's exposure by putting that name on the shirt out into the world, increasing the chances to gain new fans. Kim Kardashian has over 200 million followers. If just one percent of them are motivated to check out a band than it's worth it. Bands, especially more niche ones like Morbid Angel, don't sell multi millions of records like Metallica or Slipknot, so any extra money helps them continue on to make more music.

I'm mixed. I started listening to metal, specifically Slipknot, because I saw a pop punk band wearing their shirts in music videos. Like it's mentioned in the article, wearing the shirts could lead people to actually check out the bands. As a fan, I use the t-shirt to identify my people. Even if someone is wearing a shirt for a band I'm not crazy about, I still know that person likes a genre of music that doesn't receive the recognition that it should. The problem when people wear the shirt and don't know about the band, is thinking they are part of metal family when really they just like the t-shirt. To each their own.

I just don't understand how someone would buy a shirt of a band and it's not because they love the band. And 99% of the time if I see someone wearing a metal shirt I'll approach them and say "cool shirt" and it's a shitty thing that my compliment is based on a falsity. Also, if someone is wearing a metal shirt and a metaller engages them in conversation only to discover they really aren't in any way a fan that is fucking awkward and, frankly, a bit of a downer.

@@alanandrewmass That remind me that once I had the reverse experience. I was at a local gig with some hardcore, black and death metal bands. One guy made a compliment towards my Tshirt and I was like " nice, someone that listens Blood of Kingu as well" and proceed to ask the guy if he likes the band, what he thinks of Roman Saenko, etc. The guy was like "nah I don't know the band, its just a cool tshirt". So from this case I can say that some people like the cover/art of the metal tshirts and thats why they wear them. Ofc. there are posers as well, you can find them in any musical genre, so its not a metal specific stuff. But yep, it was kinda awkward my conversation with that guy.

I think the main issue is for some in the metal culture there was a LOT of shit they went through being a metalhead, generally by other genre fans. So seeing members of that genre wear the gear that got people bullied and picked on is a sore spot. Also if you are IN the public eye and that is your business, you should know what you wear makes a statement about what you are into, etc, and will affect your fanbases' behavior. You like the look of a shirt cool, but with the internet and cell phone, you got no excuse for not knowing who it is connected to. And Yeah some fandoms will heckle the shit out of your ass if you wear their stuff and do not know even 1 song from the band. Wear what you want but do not be surprised if you have rando's walking up to you and walking away dissapointed.

I noticed there are plenty of pre teen/teen girls who wear Metallica or Guns N Roses shirts and they have NO IDEA of what or who they are. At the same time, I noticed that plenty of these kids listen only to mumble rap or modern pop. I personally wouldn't want to wear a shirt from a band I don't know or I don't like, or wear a shirt "only for the logo." I think that wearing references to music artists on your shirts and stuff is fine. I mean, it helps the band by continuing to spread awareness of who they are. Like.. a human being out there cares so much as to wear your artwork. That's a pretty cool thing. So what if they haven't listened to a full album first? Supporting and showing appreciation for someone's work is a good thing, not a bad thing.

"I mean, it helps the band by continuing to spread awareness of who they are." That doesn't hold true. If they don't know who the band is (or even that it IS a band, in some cases) they aren't spreading awareness at all. The only people who would clue in to it are people who already know the band to begin with, and obviously the wearer who doesn't know the music can't inform anyone. I think you're on the right track, but not quite there based on that quote and this one: 'Supporting and showing appreciation for someone's work is a good thing, not a bad thing." That's just it - they AREN'T supporting and appreciating the bands' art. The art is the music, and they don't give 2 shits about it. It's literally just surface level fashionista crap which is exactly what punk and metal are the antithesis of. It's like our scene is being appropriated by the people who represent everything we stand against. No, it's not LIKE that. It IS that. If someone wants to change and become a more accepting person and they dig the music or can at least respsect people who do, I'm all for welcoming them with open arms. But if they wear the shirt of music they actively hate, then wtf are they even doing?

Metal shirts always look good on a girl, i wish more would do it, so that trend didn't take off that well, but I'm not a fan if they're wearing a Metal shirt and they're obviously trying ti be trendy, and it depends on the shirt, you might be able to pull that off with Iron Maiden and a Metallica shirt, but you'll never do it with bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem and Dark Funeral, those logos alone still get you the "WTF?" look no matter what, and i have Darkthrone and Mayhem, so know from experience, don't have a Dark Funeral one,YET!

She became known through her social media, that's all I know and I'm Phil's generation. So I believe him that he doesn't know about her, but that he has never heard of it, rather less.

It was the coolest thing to see my much younger sister wearing my old metal t-shirts. I got this Suffocation one from a friend and some random guy challenged me on that once. I liked it for the sentiment and the music, but I could not tell a single Suffocation song title. Is appreciation for the gift, the music genre overall and cool design not good enough reasons to wear it? I told him that I don't know a single song title, but I like the t-shirt, so he can fuck off. It wasn't me that looked embarrassed. Open your mind.

I know I’m a little late, but I got a funny story. One time when I was in geometry class as a sophomore(high school), I was wearing a Metallica shirt. They were and now are my favorite band so ya know, I know like, every single freaking song. My teacher happened to be huge fan too. He called me out on it and said cool shirt. After he compliments me on it, two girls turn around and tell me to name 5 songs by them. I took that as a huge challenge. I quickly named every song from kill ‘‘em all in order, then ride the lightning, then master of puppets, then and justice for all, then I made it halfway through the black album and to they were like “we said 5 not 50”. I was actually so pumped to have the opportunity to do that, not just to prove that I’m not a poser, but also, if I show everyone how much I love Metallica and metal in general, then maybe people will try it out for themselves and if they don’t like it, whatever, but if they do then we have another thing to be able to relate about.

This was so frustrating and weirdo because i never wear a t-shirt if i don't like of the band and neither asked about some song name, nothing. However, i think that even thou you don't know a track, at least you have to like to listen when someone put it to play. 😅
