I'd have to have more of a think about my top 5 Metal guitarists but I just want to mention Jerry Cantrell. That dude is able to create music and riffs that range from heavy and depressing to melodic and beautiful! I'm putting Jerry's name out there because I've rediscovered Alice in Chains recently and it's been like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in a while!

Yes totally and absolutely. Dirt always gets the mention, but I think "Facelift" has some very interesting things there. Some of the best riffs of his life were on We Die Young, - the chorus riff to It aint like That, and THAT verse riff in Bleed the Freak. Absolute WOW. Then, later in the album you get a stunning sleazy strut of "Put you Down". Real Slash vibe there, downtown badass grooves that, he didnt really return to as the albums progressed. The acoustic side? Jar Of Files. All of it. Eternal.

@@kylereece1979 I don't know if this a controversial opinion or not but Facelift is my favourite Alice in Chains album! In terms of riffs, We Die Young, Man in the Box, It Ain't Like That, Bleed the Freak, Real Thing... The album is filled with riffage just from those songs alone! Sea of Sorrow has probably my favourite Cantrell solo in it, I Can't Remember and Love, Hate, Love are brilliant creepy sounding songs (Love, Hate, Love is my favourite Layne Staley vocal performance), Put You Down sounds like a lost Guns N' Roses song. It's a fantastic album! Dirt is a great album don't get me wrong but there's just something about Facelift that appeals to me more! Saying that every Alice in Chains release is great. All of their albums and the two EPs they released are brilliant!

@@HammerHeart3229 "Put you Down" is interesting. It absolutely Slashes of GnR. But while musically, that song lays in decadent LA sleaze, it is Layne's vocal that is bridging it to the 90s. The verse: You can imagine a vocal from Axl or Seb Bach doing vocal over that riff, like something like Rocket Queen's verses. But Layne's gravely drawl makes it different. We have a musically late 80s kick ass rock with a vocal style that, within a few years would be the voice mimiced by everyone. Facelift is fascinating in that sense. A brilliant album with a couple of styles of its time, as it also is leading into the 90s.

The lead guitarist who gives me shivers down my spine every time is Marty Friedman. Hetfield is a hero of mine too, the riff lord. Dave Murray from Maiden, his lead solos are like honey and just seem effortless when you watch him play. Tom Morello, holy shit. And I'll throw in Eddie Van Halen for just generally being from the Planet Shred.

I honestly think KK is a little overrated and crammed along with Glenn, when the main guy behind most of Judas Priest is really Glenn. It's to the point that it blurs the line between guitar duo and Glenn being a de facto lead guitarist and KK just making noise most of the time.
