There has to be some reason why so many EPs are great, you could extend this to 'Mad Locust Rising' by Agent Steel, 'Warhead' by Venom and 'Haunting the Chapel' by Slayer...

I too like EPs. Sometimes they contain tracks missing from a previous album - and tend to be better than the full album filler tracks. Or they have this interesting transitional phase towards a new sound or direction which they may continue to use or drop it for a new sound by the time the next full album came out. They are like a snap shot into the mind of a band or to test the waters before the new album comes out.

I only heard THE PLASMATICS version of 'The Damned' last year, it's pretty good and there's a video for it which is quite cool too.

Good to see you back Jason! Nice one here, I love EPs, that may have to do with my short attention span, hahaha.... "Mad Butcher" never had an innersleeve and the cover of the Sodom EP is actually a photo of a carved out and polished logo. The Sodom EP has a picture disc version and a clear vinyl version as well. "Flag of Hate" was produced by Ralph Hubert from Mekong Delta (highly technical Speed/Thrash from My home country). I shared stages around Europe with three of the "Big Four"... 3. Destruction 2. Sodom 1. Kreator (for the most brutal guitar sound EVER)

And thanks for the excellent info - I never knew the Expurse cover was a photo! 😯😯 Kind of a shame that MB didn't have an inner sleeve - would have given me something to hunt down! Ah well, there's always the red vinyl version. Also, I didn't know that about Ralph - do you mean the whole EP by the way, or just the title track?

@@PossessedByMetal666 The High Roller Reissue has an innersleeve and some more goodies. Ralph Hubert produced all three tracks of the "Flag of Hate" EP. I played in a band called Final Breath. With me, the band released an album on Nuclear Blast in 2001 and another one on Remedy in 2003. We played with Sodom and Destruction multible times and of course Tankard, I´m still in contact with Gerre.

I love these E.P's too. I have to agree with you about the quality of songs on an E.P being better. I think that more attention was paid to each song whilst being recorded in the studio and in my humble opinion the energy levels are much higher on a shorter format. Sometimes a lengthy album can wear you down a bit, where as E.P's like these are short and sweet. My ranking order is the same as yours. My all time favourite tracks from Kreator and Sodom are on these E.P's. Awakening of the Gods being my all time favourite Kreator track and My Atonement is my favourite Sodom track of all time. I prefer the original version of Mad Butcher on Sentence of Death as it is raw, darker and uncompromising. The version on Mad Butcher E.P. is a bit more muffled and has the added Pink Panther theme tacked on the end for a bit of a laugh. Reject Emotions is the stand out track on Mad Butcher in my humble opinion. Great video, I do love your coverage of German Thrash Metal as it is my absolute favourite genre in Heavy Metal. Keep up the good work.

That's a good point about the energy levels across an EP versus an album. And I'm glad we share a love of Awakening Of The Gods. Are you similarly frustrated when the band play it live... only to stop it halfway through? 😆 They seem to treat it like Metallica treat Master Of Puppets, haha.

I have seen Kreator about 4 or 5 times since 2001 and I was frustrated when they cut Awakening of the Gods short. I also feel that they should play Take their Lives as I have yet to hear it in a live set.

Great stuff. I'd probably swap Sodom and Kreator but it's much of a muchness. If we are talking absolute best German thrash EPs, it's In the Sign of Evil for me!

I love Kreator. They’re my favorite of the German Big 4 but…Destruction’s Mad Butcher ep is definitely my favorite of 3 ep’s, followed by Sodom’s Expurse of Sodomy ep, then comes Kreator’s Flag of Hate. They’re all great, and maybe I’m a little biased because I have great memories attached to the Mad Butcher ep but that one is the one I return to more often than the others. Great video…Thanks 🤘🏻

@@PossessedByMetal666 My favorite track….Man, that’s tough…It’s a toss up between Reject emotions, and Mad Butcher. For me, they’re interchangeable in terms of ranking. The Damned and even the Last Judgment are both great but the other two just hit me harder and really get the blood pumping. The cd I have also has the Eternal Devastation album included. I’ve had it for so long now that I don’t think I can listen to just Mad Butcher. In my head, it’s almost like an extended version of the Mad Butcher ep since the ep is first in the playing order. Note: I had to edit this as I originally wrote Curse the Gods as one of my top favorites, and that one wasn’t part of the ep. but because of the version I have, in my mind, Eternal Devastation is all just a part of it. lol!

@@PossessedByMetal666 I originally owned Mad Butcher on cassette. I have since replaced much of my cassette collection with cd’s and vinyl. So when I got a copy on cd, the one that was available at the time was the 2000 SPV release. It’s a single disc, and not much else by way of liner notes or lyrics. There has since been rereleases of the the early albums (MB included) which I believe are remastered versions. I just haven’t gotten them yet. There’s so much being released these days that it’s hard to keep up and still keep a roof over my head lol!

1 - Kreator, 2 -- Sodom, 3 - Destruction. I agree, the Destruction EP is a bit.... scrappy. Reject Emotions is cool but the widdly guitar thing is redumbnant and like you I never thought Mad Butcher was close to being their best. The Sodom ep was a huge shock on release because it was so much more 'professional' than 'Obsessed', all three songs are great but it still can't match the Kreator EP. Flag of Hate is good, Take their Lives is killer but Awakening of the Gods is an absolute diamond. This, Pleasure to Kill and Renewal (I know) are the peaks of the Kreator discography for me.

Very late but still, here´s my answer to why "Expurse..." came out only two months before "Persecution...": We all know the story of their first EP intended to be a full album and the lable aborted the recording session. Then "Obsessed..." had to be recorded twice. Now, in 1987 the band had yet another lineup and the lable was not sure about that. "Expurse..." was some kind of a "test balloon" for the company to see if and how it´ll work out. Steamhammer had to invest a lot more in the production and the marketing for the "Persecution..." album... understandable they wanted to be 100% sure. A couple of years ago I saw Sodom opening a gig by playing the whole EP in reverse order... nice, huh?

3 classic EPs. 1. Flag of Hate. 2. Expurse of Sodomy, 3. Mad Butcher. Loved everything on Flag of Hate. Take their Lives and Awakening of the Gods were 2 barnburners. Expurse of Sodomy EP is very different from Obsessed By Cruelty. Persecution Mania's release two months later turned me into a Sodom fan. Destruction on the other side went in a wrong direction with their progressive style.

I go Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, just as that was theorder i first heard them, but Kreator are my favourite of the big 4 German Thrashers. Nice subliminal advertiser of your book of the same name ob your shirt, it's one i own, a decent read 👍
