Sorry, this upset you so much. That being said, if you go to a theme park for only two rides that are hard (sometimes impossible) to get onto... you're really stacking the deck against yourself. The rest of the parks have so much to offer - I hope you enjoyed everything else. Nothing is guaranteed and you have to make the best of it. I was just in WDW two months ago and it was REALLY hard to get on RoTR - but I had to tell myself... it's not the end of the world. And for a week-long vacation for four, we spent wat more than $1,500.

I know he’s angry because $1500 is a lot of money for anyone, but he was setting himself up for massive disappointment. Especially for only wanting to go there for two of the most popular rides right now with capacity limitations and the park having staff shortages. I was at DR and DCA a month ago and I couldn’t get on Indiana Jones or Rise of the Resistance and my Mom works at DCA. But I still made the most of it and had a good day.

@@spn2240 not necessarily. Most of the rest of the park was open to regular lines. This particular, very popular ride is virtual queue at this time and fills up quick because they can’t put 8 strangers into a car for physical distance requirements. If you’re a in a party of 3, they have no choice but to put you in your own car, which makes the ride fill up fast. The rest of the park was great. We went on June 8th, and wait times for all the rides were under 20 minutes. Longest wait we had was for autopia at about 30 minutes. The park was at 25% max capacity and I’ve never seen it so quiet and uncrowded in all my life.

Ok, former banker here, advise time. For big ticket items, always pay with your bank card. Prior to that, make sure you have an awesome relationship with your bank, be it the institution itself or at least one employee there. Always try for your initial refund from the point of service and, should that fail, contact your bank. Any bank worth their salt, especially if you've years of service with them, and in areas such as lines of credit, loans, mortgages, they become your living champion. You won't have to do more than a phone call or email, the bank will do the heavy lifting and get your dollars refunded. Believe it. And I'm sorry you had such a shabby experience on your anniversary.

Any time you have a disappointment at the Disney parks, you should go talk to a cast member about it. Calmly express to them what happened and the reasons it caused such disappointment. My experience is that at the least they will try to offer you something even if it's not the original thing you were hoping for. This is how my group of 6 got on Rise of the Resistance in WDW back in February of 2020 after initially getting shut out.

I think it's kind of naive to think that you're going to get on the 2 most popular attractions. I NEVER go during a big opening like this, and if I do, I avoid everything new and don't expect to do anything I want. I went to Walt Disney World last year before Covid and I was like, if Rise of the Resistance doesn't happen, I'm okay with that. It thankfully did but how can you expect that you're going to get on an attraction. It sounds bizarre and unrealistic.

If you're fine with going to DLAND as the experience, cool beans. Many CA residents have had the annual pass, and therefore don't care much about the DLAND experience. They are instead focused on Star Wars land and Avengers Campus. It's understandable about spots selling instantly. The Cantina did that, RoR has always been like that. However, now that people are buying individual day passes, there needs to be a better implementation of services (like Rob said) about moving the ticket date if still early in the morning, having a preselection of 3-5 or so rides, etc. To have the argument that hey, supply and demand, suck it up? That's not a magical experience. That's expected from a low rate amusement park, not Disneyland. They need better implementations.

I feel like maybe you shouldn't have booked you're entire trip around those 2 attractions. Spiderman literally JUST opened up. Disneyland JUST recently opened back up. Rise of the resistance is still difficult to get on, sure. But universal does the same thing as far as virtual ques for their newest attractions. I know in Florida for a fact that they do, California might idk. I was lucky to get on Hagrids when I visited a couple months ago in Florida. With Hargrids ride and their new velocicoaster they are making it a virtual line. Its just a new method theme parks are starting to choose I think. I guess I just feel like there are so many other rides and things to do in disney like, why not stay and just try and have a good time after dropping all the money you did. On top of that staying on site as well at a disney hotel. Centering you're entire trip around just those 2 things after knowing, from prior experience, that it's difficult to get on the rides..doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Not trying to sound mean or anything. Just being honest.

It’s the middle of June, when most people start taking vacations and day trips. Covid restrictions are being permanently lifted all over the country. But John is surprised he couldn’t go on the two most popular rides in Disneyland? I agree with people who are saying that he shouldn’t be judged because he’s fortunate enough to afford a trip like this, when so many other people can’t even pay their bills. John earns his money and he has the right to spend it however he wants, but nonetheless this does come off as a little tone deaf. I love you, John, but I think you’re fair game in the comments on this one.

Clicked over to your video from a Disney site...So, seems like you went for 2 reasons: ROTR and Web Slingers? If that was your main goal perhaps some research and speaking to your Disney-savy friends would have made you pause and rethink spending $$$$. Also, being an AP'er for 10 years is enough time to understand how and where to get updates on both parks. The onus lies on you and your wife, NOT Disney. You made a decision to book one of the most expensive onsite hotels and buy two hoppers but you-didn't-do-your-homework. I'm taking a family of 4 up to the parks next week. I alerted them to the fact that we probably would not get on ROTR or WS...they are A-Ok with just hanging at the parks and having fun. The thing is and this is coming from a person who usually visits the parks, going on a ride shouldn’t be a lottery “by chance” system, people are paying money to experience new attractions that are being marketed to them as a reason to visit, only to go and be told the boarding system filled up within 10 seconds. You shouldn’t have to “do your homework” to experience a big attraction that is in demand. No one gives two flying shits if your family is ok with missing out on the new rides but John is clearly a huge fan of these franchises and after paying a lot of money for the trip to experience them, he deserves to ride it like anyone else even if there is a long line, instead of being told no because of their stupid lottery system

@@john.michael01 If you're talking about a convention, I could see your point, but this is a theme park targeted for families with small children, most of which would not be able to stand in a single line for 4-6 hours as would likely have been the case with ROTR. Plus, with the ride notorious for how frequently it breaks down, a standby line would still be a gamble that you could even get on it. While the lottery system is not perfect, it is an okay compromise because you significantly reduce the number of people who feel like the entire day was wasted; I would feel much more annoyed learning I could not get on a ride because it broke down after I spent multiple hours in line, than finding out within 30 seconds of entering the park

Back when we did ROTR at WDW you had to be IN THE PARK as in you tickets have been spent to enter the park for the system to allow you get a boarding pass for the ride (this was within a few months of ROTR first opening). Perhaps that's what happened? We woke up at 5am to make sure we could 1. get in with time to spare and 2. get in the early line for the Slinky Dog Coaster. We had our trip planned for months and it was a big 6 day trip with my crew of 6 (we try to go once every 2-3 years). Luckily everything worked out and we got to ride everything we wanted. Never been to Disneyland but we have always had fun at WDW, it just takes a lot of planning since there are 4 parks to divide your time.

It will be like that again eventually. All the rest of the park was quiet, lines were 15-20 minutes. Smuggler's Run, another popular Star Wars ride that is not quite as new, but still pretty new, had a 20 minute line you could just stand in. The problem here is that this ride is SUPER popular at the moment, and they can't stuff 8 strangers into each car like they normally would--so they have to use this virtual queue method, otherwise the line would snake around the entire park because of the ride's popularity and the distancing rules the park has to observe. While it's not great, it is better than the alternative in this unique situation where they have to adhere to distance and capacity rules.

Please don’t go to Disneyland or Disney world in June, of course the virtual reservation is all booked but Disney did to you for not refunding you or change your date was definitely disgusting, I work at Disney world and I would say the bad months to visit to Disney world or Disneyland is may, June, July, and august, a lot of parents and other family members would take their children to those parks when they are out from school and wedding seasons would start at that time so you would see groups people for bachelorette or bachelor party and also a lot of group of college students would also visit . The best time to go to those park is September, October (not Disney world, they celebrating their 50th anniversary), January, and February, save you a lot of time and probably it get you a better chance to book reserve to those rides in Disneyland and Disney world. I hope this helps if anyone who wants to buy ticket to those Disney parks

If only Disney had a way to limit capacity in their parks to make sure the reduced ride capacity didn’t strain their system or ruin guest experience. Oh wait… shit… they DID! The park reservation system was supposed to be so that overall crowd levels didn’t overburden the ride capacity. But that’s fucking pointless once Disney decides to keep expanding park capacity without expanding ride capacity. Things were great if you were there the first week or two and they’ve gotten worse/busier week after week. Disney just keeps adding more people to parks but not to the rides. We were there a month ago and it was busy but bearable. We were there a week ago and it was so unbearable my kids were ready to leave by 10am. Disney got greedy… full stop.

I haven't been to Disneyland in ages. But living on the East Coast, I'd been to Disneyworld (and Epcot and the International thingy) many times and I felt like Disneyworld was so much better -- cleaner, better taken care of, rides in better shape, etc. But again, haven't been to either one in a long, long time, so take that for what it's worth. That said, I did go to College on the west coast (Caltech in Pasadena), and I'll always remember that Disneyland would open up the park to all members of the Caltech and JPL community for free once a year. And even though there would always be a major ride or two going through maintenance, I'd have a grand old time. All I had to do is pay some nominal amount for one of the buses that the school rented, and that was it. As I said, it was never anywhere near as great as Disney World+ in Florida. But you can't argue with free. One thing I remember about those evenings is that friends and I would ride on something like Space Mountain or that Mountain thing (forget the name) over and over again as much as we wanted because there were virtually no lines. Fun times. As far as your situation is concerned, keep complaining loudly. That's the only way you'll get them to change.

They can’t open an Avengers Campus at Walt Disney World due to an agreement that Marvel made with Universal before Disney acquired them; WDW will have some MCU presence at the parks (a Guardians of the Galaxy-themed coaster is opening at Epcot in the next year or so) but nothing to the scale that Disneyland has (or can have in the future) unfortunately.

They may not be able to do Avengers at Disney World because of the weird, and infinitely renewable, agreement which Marvel made with Universal Studios years before Disney bought Marvel. Only in the United States, and only east of the Mississippi, Universal has the rights to the Marvel Comics characters for use in theme parks. Universal never optioned the characters for any of their other parks, and the options expired, so you see Disney using Marvel characters all over the planet, but not at WDW. The very nuanced approach going on in Orlando seems to be a gentleman’s arrangement. You’ll never see Marvel Studios versions of characters at Universal Orlando, and you’ll never see Marvel Comics versions of characters at WDW.

The Virtual line allows people to book a spot in line for something they want to ride WITHOUT the hassle of waiting for two to three hours in line, thus that primary factor of warding off the impatient does not apply, thus every spot in line fills up. Add to that less overall operation time due to employees needing to check, verify and process virtual tickets with the guests. The ride is probably only sending through 60% operation of what it was pre-covid with the same overall guest attendance... Without the virtual ticket, if you're just PATIENT enough, you can pretty much guarantee yourself a spot in any ride cause standing in line. I heard Universal Studious is way better so I’ll be going there. Love Knotts scary farm to do I’ll be saving money for that. I’ll work for Disney but could care less about the parks I’m POF

I’m sorry. But everyone knows it’s not guaranteed you’ll get on Spider-Man or Rise of the Resistance. So if that’s the only reason you’re going to Disney, you’re setting yourself up for failure. And I don’t feel like it’s like a concert. If I don’t get into those rides, I know there’s a lot of other things to do.

Disney world blows Disney land out of the water... been too both. It’s 💯 worth the trip to Orlando...

John i agree, i live in Australia and i would be so annoyed if i traveled all that way and i couldnt get to do at least one of the rides i wanted. If you book ahead and want specific rides you should be able to book a time slot and at the time of booking your passes and if there are no available rides times that you want at least then you can change your booking to suit your needs.

Same shit went down with the vaccine slot booking in India until the central government stepped in.

This would really annoy me too. Especially as someone who doesn't live in LA. When you go on an overseas holiday you want to be able to book all the things you want to do because you might never be able to come back.

As a card-carrying roller coaster enthusiast and someone who may not have been to CA but is originally from FL and still knows Disney quite well, I don't see you as missing much if that ends up being your decision. I'd sooner go to either Knott's, CA's Great America or both of the Six Flags before stepping foot into any of the Disney parks.

That is some BS...I haven't been to Universal Studios and Disney World in Orlando in a long time but when I went like a decade ago it was awesome. There was so much stuff there that it was impossible not to have fun on some awesome ride or attraction.

What I would do to go back to Disneyland. I was there in 2003. My tickets were given to me and my family for free by Roy E. Disney, Walt Disney's nephew thanks to The Make A Wish Foundation. There's a LOT I would want to do. Though...I heard that most of these changes that you had were due to Chapek. I've not looked into it, but I've heard friends on a forum share similar sentiments about the changes Chapek made to Disney Parks.

Bots must be buying up all of the rides after they bought up all the video cards.

Rise of the Resistance also has enough technical problems that you don’t know how many people are going to get to ride that ride from day to day. There are many people who got into the virtual queue only to lose their seat because the rise was shut down. Also, a *lot* of B-ride experiences when the A-ride animatronics break down.

My opinion is that if your staying in any of the 3 hotels on Disney property you should be guarantee a spot on those rides.
