Viewer Question:
Kylo Ken - John it seems your favorite AMC CEO Adam Aron is making some more incredible decisions to make the movie going experience that much better. According to Deadline Aron has stated that AMC plans to charge “slightly higher prices” for The Batman tickets than they are for other films playing in the same theaters. They decided that the release of The Batman is the perfect opportunity to experiment with variable pricing. I’m sure this will go over great and will help the box office of The Batman tremendously but I wanted to get your thoughts. Can’t wait to hear what you think. As always thanks and BOTF.

AMC near me is horrible to go to now. The concession stands prioritize VIP members now - which may sound fine, unless you're stuck in the regular line and it doesn't; move for 10-15 minutes (not getting to the front of the line but staying in one spot). I was "next" forever but VIP's kept showing up and they get cut privileges I guess. It's weird that a dozen people can just step in front of you and everyone's supposed to be fine with it.

I totally agree with Rob. Everything we do in our lives, especially our leisure activities, is being looked at like a financial investment. Ex Disney parks, going to the movies. We go to these things to escape the world. To learn things. To be moved emotionally. Capitalism and insane profit driven companies are killing all fun things that make life worth living.

Adam Aron was one of the executives in charge of the 76ers during the "Process" years. That was when the team intentionally tanked for 4--5 years. They put a garbage team on the court and still charged full price to season ticket holders. He almost killed Sixers basketball in Philly.

I think this “clip” of John talking about the theatrical experience describes everything I love about this show. Takes divisive and difficult topics like Adam Aaron’s handling of AMC theaters and explores and commentates on every aspect of it through genuine passion and humor with a group of people who not only enjoy talking about the movies, but just enjoy being together, celebrating what they love and how we can get to a place where we can enjoy what we love again when people like Adam Aaron threaten to upend things for us. Could watch this show forever, but I know life doesn’t work that way, so I’ll watch every one I can and appreciate it while it’s available to me- kind of like life itself.

I went to a Matinee showing of The Godfather at my local AMC for the 50th anniversary with a friend who had never seen it before. Two of us at 12:30 in the afternoon cost THIRTY BUCKS! And that was with online fees waved and a 25% off discount for the early viewing. I think I will check out another cinema a little out of the way in order to save a few bucks. They make their money on popcorn, pop, and candy. They should not need to charge more for a ticket. It was expensive before they tried to charge more for a ticket. John hit a home run here. When I go to the movies with my wife and 2 kids it’s $60 bucks just to walk in the door. Add drinks and snacks and you are getting close to $100. To see a movie. So now we are extremely selective about what we go to the theaters to see. This is why myself and so many others just wait a month or so to watch most movies on our big screen TV. And this is tragic - because going to the Movies used to be my very FAVORITE thing to do in the World. This idea will certainly NOT help - that’s for sure. And Robs brilliant deep take made it all the more sad what’s happening…

In my country we have variable pricing for movie tickets. I have to say first of all that generally the prices are pretty good compared to US pricing. Full price is for shows at typically busy hours. So late afternoon and up. Morning shows will be about 70% of the price. And some special days will be 50% the price. These prices also don't discriminate between the movies. Be it The Batman or Sing 2. Local films are slightly cheaper in general. Special theatres like Imax, Beanie, etc. Those are obviously pricier, however don't vary during the day. I work from home and sometimes I am able to see a movie in the morning, middle of the week. It's cheaper and quieter, and I can just enjoy the movie. And If I want to watch the evening shows with a crowd. Cool. Price is still fair for that too. Variable pricing can work, if it's to the benefit to us the viewer. AMC clearly being greedy here.

For those who are not old enough to remember, especially if you're not from a big city like NY, this is really not new. Back in the day, during the age of the double feature and pre-multiplex; we had these theaters that would only show potential blockbusters and only one movie, so, when Superman debuted, for example, they would show that one movie and a ticket would cost $5 when double features down the street of lesser movies would be $3.50. This kind of makes sense since these big-budget movies cost much more to make, needed to bring in much more from the box office, and probably cost those independent theaters much more to obtain. Now, I don't know how AMC justifies giving so much to the CEO, but I think that's a separate thing from this price model.

Not worry about annoying kids playing with their straws causing it to loudly squeak at the other end of the row with their parents not doing a thing to stop them. Don't have to show up an hour early to get the seat I want (not every place has assigned seating). Other good stuff about watching at home... Eat what ever I want at a reasonable price. Pause it. Watch it more than once. Have friends over to watch it. I loved going to the theater years ago, its a great experience... but not at current prices.

There are 3 movie theaters in our area that we frequent, the closest is a Cinemark, next closest is an AMC and the third is an independent theater where you do a meal and a movie. We usually go to the independent one because you kill two birds with one stone, but if we're just looking to see a movie, we'll go to either of the other two depending on our scheduling needs. As it is, we usually only go to the theaters for the big blockbuster movies, or occasionally we'll go see something else for a date night or movie with friends, but if this is going to be the norm, I have no problem waiting for the big blockbusters to come out on streaming. I have Netflix/Disney+/Prime/HBOMax. One of those typically has the newest movies to come out, or I'll just buy it if it was something I really want to watch. Movies for us is a treat rather than a weekly event. A couple rebuttles: 1) The flute isn't in the string section, it's a wind instrument. 2) I do go to baseball stadium for the game over the experience of the park.

I used to go to at least a movie a week. My local theater was my second home. I go to a few movies a year now. Granted I am now a professional with a family, but tickets are double what they were when I used to frequent the theater and that is a major reason I don't just sneak away every now and again to catch a movie every other week or so.

AMC still has hard ass seats for their IMAX room. I could barely endure the Avengers IW & Endgame for how flat the pads are on the seats. Only the Dolby room has the premium recliner. They need to remodel their locations before I pay the higher tickets! Thank goodness I already have bought The Batman tickets weeks ago.

I left AMC in 2016. I attended the GM conference that year, and it was Aaron’s first conference. He didn’t pay attention and was on his phone consistently. Not very inspiring IMO.

Here in Hawaii we've got Consolodated Theaters. And they've updated their Theaters tremendously here. Certain ones are dine in theaters where you make your order for a Charbroiled Burger, fries, or even an entire plate of food. Tables and recliner type seating. It's always an incredible experience and we'll worth it.

I'm a huge AMC fan (been an A-List member since its inception), but I'll be seeing the Batman at a Regal theater. I'll also be seeing the new Fantastic Beasts movie at Regal, and any other big movie that's releasing soon.

I feel that AA has taken the supply and demand too literally. It would have been more palatable if he also reduce the ticket price for other shows. Or reduce it after the opening night of high profile movie (I would just wait until the second day to watch)

I love the passion, especially about the 9 million bonus.... it just sucks that this is how all the big businesses act in our country... just like all the financial ceos after the 2008 implosion. The problem is though as well is that alot of places there are not alot of choices of movie theatres... Like where i am in GA its almost entirely AMC

Well, if they start to bring in less customers bc of this then I hope that will deter other theaters from doing the same (and will revert AMC back to their normal prices)

The key for theaters is to improve their subscription services, although I already do quite like AMC A List. Maybe they just need to package a ticket with food and drink in the online order with a small discount, so they can lock in the purchase whether the person gets it or not later.

First of all it was the "wallstreetbets stock incident" in 2021 that kept AMC afloat. Now after the company is safe, the CEO wants to screw the customers over? Well, that's not smart. I'm going to ICON Theaters. Got my tickets, cost me the same price as No Way Home.

AMC's idea on variable pricing is no more than a gamble on price elasticity and futures on movies. Bigger theater franchises may get away with this if they have distribution advantage and better cinema experiences than the average theaters. People aren't going to fuss about a couple dollars extra as people are already willing to spend money on 'movie night' out for a movie they already know its worth watching. On the other hand, Im interested to know if charging less for less anticipated movies will increase audience size instead. Given that less anticipated movies have probably less marketing budget, and the prices should reflect that cost. My theory is that theater releases are inherently inelastic, meaning there won't be a immediate reaction in audience size vs price deltas.

I’m one of those AMC meme stock investors. This is a turn off. I feel like this. Sony has that A95K QD-OLED coming out. It’s going to be pricey, but it’s apparently not going to break the bank. I also have Dolby Atmos surround sound. Not like what I’ll experience in a theater, but good enough for my apartment. If they keep fucking around, I’ll just wait for the Blu-ray and streaming releases.

Also, a big difference between theatres and sports events/concerts is that you get to see the actual celebrities/athletes live. And you get closer to the performers. Unless I'm getting a live performance by the actors, I don't think it's fair for variable pricing.

Lucky for me, the is no AMC theater in the entire state of Mississippi. However, not far from where I live, there are 3 theaters run by regional chains. Southwest Theaters runs two theaters, one in Laurel (4 screens) at the Sawmill Square Mall and the another in Hattiesburg ( 9 screens) at the Turtle Creek Mall. They charge about $9.00 plus tax for matinee ticket and around $12.00 plus tax after matinee hours ticket, anything else like popcorn, drinks, etc. are extra. Also, there is another theater in Hattiesburg called The Grand 18 which has 18 screens and charges $8.75 plus tax for matinee ticket and after 3:30 pm the ticket goes to $10.75 plus tax. They did offer discounts for children, senior citizens, military, and college students when I last went and the theater had been updated to where every screen room had premium recliner seating, there is now a lobby alcohol bar, you could order food and have it delivered to your seat. I believe I will stick to my local theaters.

If I as a customer want to go to the movies in aneheim California I can expect to pay about 10-15$ for my ticket and 20$ for a popcorn drink and maybe candy that is a 30-40$ experience and that’s only for one person for most people they can’t afford to go to the movies every 2 weeks and see whatever the newest release is ans even if they can it’s massively expensive
