It’s has nothing to do with the genre. It has to do that Marvel movies and other action blockbusters have taken over the calendar for 12 months. I was fine with Batman in 1989 cause that was the only comic book movie. There used to be a variety of movies for everyone and that’s gone as the smaller/mid budget movies are a dying breed. The problem is my dopey GenX and older Millenials won’t grow up and can’t get past their youth so they continue to fuel these movies. Whether it’s Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Comic Book Movies, Fast and the Furious, these people want the same shit that they experienced as 10 year old kids. It’s time to move on as do we really need another Star Wars movies? Another Marvel movie at this point in their lives? You will never relive those times cause you aren’t kids anymore. So move the f*** on, so Hollywood can go back to making movies with an actual story and character development instead wowing a bunch of 30-40 year olds with another pointless CGI-fest.

I think it's perfectly fine not to like or want to be involved in comic book films but insulting the people who create them is unnecessary and unprofessional. Particularly in the case of Scarlett Johansson, she was in Endgame, Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in 2019. She could just coast on her Marvel paycheck if she wanted to but she's still seeking out other, smaller projects.

The Black Widow (and Captain Marvel to some extent) situation is a reflection of what has always happened in Marvel comics, and that is the poor use and characterization of their female superheroes SAVE the X-Men, because they always did a waaaaaaaay better job with them for some reason. In my opinion, generally speaking DC was always better when it came to the usage of their female roster.

I bet Scarlett don't even know who Stephen Dorff is.

Stephen sure has some nerve calling a movie a bad video game when he was in goddamn Alone in The Dark, directed by Uwe Boll.

The moment I heard "I'm embarrassed for her" it's like, ahhhhh okay, jealousy/you've lost the fucking plot it seems, lol

that's cherry-picking, Dorff is a jobbing actor and you could just as well pick out the great talent he's worked with: John Waters, Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Bob Rafelson, Oliver Stone. filmmaking is hella expensive, it's a miracle anything gets made at all, and even more miraculous if you get to work with one great director, never mind five.

He did work with some big name directors (although those projects are spaced reaaaally far apart, and he had minor roles), but if you run down his filmography, the *vast majority* of it is like those bargain bin Direct-To-DVD stuff. Some of which would make Desperate Bruce Willis even go "EWWW". I would not make fun of a man trying to get honest work. We know the Hollywood business is sometimes cruel and tough to exist in, and you take what you can. But Stephen Dorff cast judgment on a fellow actor, calling their career choices embarrassing, and calling a movie he hasn't watched garbage and without merit. When someone raises their voice to fellow colleagues like that, they have now automatically invited scrutiny towards their own career choices. And his resume speaks for itself. Completely forgettable outside of a few lucky gigs with some notable names. Even after True Detective he went back to no-name films, and yet mocks Scarlett for her choices in films. If he simply said "Marvel stuff ain't for me", that's fine. But as John said, Stephen Dorff chose to go one vicious step further, and he's only exposed himself as a hypocrite (he was in comic book and video game movies and lots of bad films). And we don't take hypocrites seriously since they seem to lack awareness and self-reflection.

To me it looks like now someone besides the unimpeachable Martin Scorsese has stuck their head on the block, all the superhero movie fans finally get their chance to get their digs in, cause when Scorsese drags a type of filmmaking you just have to eat it and smile. Also, Dorff has made some fantastic films, and downplaying them as "minor" roles that he was "lucky" enough to fall into is not being reasonable; he was popular in his youth, a charismatic and talented actor who was too idiosyncratic for mainstream leads, many people loved him for that. Just let him say his piece, you got the biggest media conglomerate in the world in pumping out superhero movies from here to to Kuala Lumpur, the major US studios are not interested in making off-beat films for adults anymore: John Waters hasn't made a film since 2004, David Lynch hasn't had a theatrical film since 2006, Jarmusch makes his by getting his friends to work for the price of a coffee and a sandwich, Cronenberg just got financed again after considering retirement for years. The superhero movies won the day, and if someone stands up and says AAAH THIS SUCKS, the least you could do is take it philosophically and be a gracious winner. I'm glad Dorff is salty enough to stick his neck out, more power to him.

Yeah, this is what makes me laugh about him claiming that he doesn't want to be in a Marvel movie. I could actually buy his argument if he were in the shoes of someone like Jake Gyllenhaal, who basically stars in critically acclaimed movie after critically acclaimed movie. If he'd turned down Far from Home and said that he just doesn't want to be in those types of movies, people may have been upset with him but they could understand where he's coming from. But as recently as 2017 you had Dorff starring in a sequel to what's honestly the worst long running horror franchise. Yes, the original is a classic, but every other movie is awful. They aren't even in the so bad it's good category like some of the Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th movies, they're just terrible. If you're willing to star in that, then no way are you turning down starring in a MCU movie if Feige approaches you.

I'm surprised John fell into this trap. He is more savy than this. It was one throw away remark in an interview discussing Stephen Dorff's long career and his preference with taking quirky and non-commercial friendly roles. It is unfortunate that the editor's of the interview chose to lead the article with that quote. I'm sure Dorff didn't think it would generate THIS amount of press. When I read the WHOLE article it came off as his own take on his personal taste in movies. That watching a fellow actor being asked to play a bigger than life superhero was embarrassing for HIM as a fellow performer to watch. Because he knew about the kind of leap in logic that is required as a performer to portray that role. I know performers who feel the same way about Shakespeare. Watching performers in tights reciting poetry pretending to be in the Renaissance era. It's not a comment on the content or validity of the performance. But the sheer amount of suspension of belief required to create that performance from the actor. People have the right to express their own personal taste. Doesn't mean they expect us to follow them. Just because Stephen Dorff, Coppola, and Scorsese don't like comic book movies. Doesn't mean we have to stop liking them.

Army of the Dead went #1 worldwide when it came out on Netflix, it's enjoyable fun movie IMO, so i ain't going to join in a hate bandwagon, when everyone is complaining about how unoriginal and oversaturated reboots, remakes. Just enjoy the movie for what it is

The funny thing is that most of the Black Widow cast, in my opinion, is far more talented than Stephen Dorff. I haven’t seen the film yet, but I’m willing to bet they give better performances than he has in past films. Blu cigarette commercials notwithstanding.

Another great epic rant by John Campea. Gold! Also, John, if he hates me for being someone who loves these comic book movies, well then, fuck him! Cause these types of movies are what’s help bringing people like me and others go back to theaters. Help make the box offices, make millions and now hundred millions of dollars. What kind of movies has Stephen “Dork” done to help make us go see in theaters lately?

I completely believe - without any evidence or anything to support my belief - that Dorff wanted one of the roles in something from Marvel and the studio told his agent no. The lines of "I don't want to be in those movies. I really don't," just comes across to me as someone saying "You're not invited to my party" and he stomps his foot and says "That's fine, I didn't want to go anyway!" That's my read on his comment.

He’s embarrassed for them? Can’t imagine they ever spared him a thought. 😂

To paraphrase Rob, who was reasonable and sane, there's no reason to "malign" and "impugn" his character and skill. So you don't like his comments. Your rant was far worse than his. You have "the audacity" to "insult" him, wish his career will be in tatters, and call him some ridiculous, abusive names. Insulting his movies and acting skills tells me you don't know how to disagree like an adult, and that you favor superficial movies. @DEONT WILD 😂. Masterpiece film. Have you never seen Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, Lost in Translation, among others? Also Captain America: The Winter Soldier is more than a masterpiece! Awards and money matters the most you dumbo. Otherwise Dorff would be doing drama and plays not licking boots and still getting rejected by big studios. He wasn't even the lead character in Blade, it will be too dumb to call it 'his' masterpieces. Also its a superhero film, who Dorff says he hates lol!

Stephen Dorff is the same guy who was in Uwe Boll's awful Alone in the Dark movie, the awful Leatherface movie, an awful movie called American Hero (Which is a super hero movie...go figure), etc... seriously most of the movies he is in are just downright awful. 100 percent. Just say piss off to Dorff and be done, why 27 times. Its expressed immediately. This wasn't insulting to fans or anyone, it's Dorff trying hard to look special or like he actually refused to be in one of the 70 or so successful comic movies and TV adaptations of the last 15 years when we saw him in next to nothing

I can’t tell whether your being serious or not when you go on your rants. It’s so over the top over something so stupid. The actor voiced his opinion, he’s not a fan of these movies. Could he have said it better? Of course, but the temper tantrum over this is comical. Shitting on his career seems so petty. He’s know for Deacon Frost, but he’s done good work in other movies/ shows. Saying he’s not getting cast in anything when he was recently costarring with Mahersgala Ali in True Detective. How many memorable roles do you have in your resume?

It sounds like Dorff did try to audition for one of those movies maybe more than once and he never got any call backs which is probably why he's so upset and angry. Either way he'll never get a role with them now.

The problem with being such a dominant force in pop culture like the mcu is that all news, good and bad, gets published no matter how insignificant. The marvel movies have their problems but there are so many worse examples of blockbusters. It’s clear these people want to piggie back off of the publicity for their own sagging careers.
