The comic book media industry has an intense obsession with being the first to leak information and scoop news. The pressure on content creators and Hollywood insiders to constantly be ahead of the game is immense. Ultimately, this trend needs to come to an end.

Variety and Deadline also inform the studio before posting those stories. Usually they don't infringe copyright or reveal corporate secrets. And yes, leaking unauthorised images before the release of the film are corporate secrets.

If this information wasn't treated like the CIA Archives, there wouldn't be a market for such intense, source-based journalism. We don't need to be pro-corporation, here. These companies do it to themselves when they act like this over entertainment information. Hard to see it any other way.

I think that disney shouldnt have a rigjt to force anyone to disclose where they got movie information from. Mainly because, at the end of the day, its disneys security problem. Its their lack of oversight that lets these things get out, period. And once you start going to court to force people into giving up information on where the leaks came from, thats a VERY slippery slope. Its a quick jump from that , to no one can report on anything about an upcoming project.

John, I think you missed the point. There is a difference between the release of privileged information that a leaker shares or that a journalist finds, vs. an image that is leaked. Disney literally owns the latter, which is tangible property, so the substance of the argument is the leaking of Disney property. It doesn't have anything to do with an Instagrammer being anonymous vs. a journalist being on a byline. Now, there are plenty of arguments against Disney, but that's the crux. If the leaker had shared a set picture he/she took themselves, there wouldn't be a subpoena (although Disney still would try to find out the identity of the leaker).

There's a difference between ideas and expression of ideas. Ideas are not copyrightable but their expression is. You can describe the image in question and describe plot points, but you cannot post the script or pieces of or or images of the movie. Those last 2 are copyright protected. And they can subpoena them if there is a strong indication that they will continue posting copyrighted material until they are cut off from the source.

This person, this traitor, will be worth more to us than ten legions of Sardaukar!' - the people running that site, probably. Also - not all of us walk around with those in our pockets all the time, some of us even resisted having to upgrade to those types of phones till the companies made it more expensive to get the old dumb flip phones. I'd rather go back to the late 2000's when if I wanted to go out and take pictures while listening to music, and the ability to get a call or make one if needed, I had some heavy flip phone I could accidently launch and wouldn't even scratch the paint let alone break it (and didn't weird me out with how precise tracking it had), an MP3 player, and a camera - digital or film. Then again I'm also the guy who hates using wireless controllers and really hate how hard/more costly it tends to be to get wired ones.
