Transplant Fitness

Hi, my name is Mark Zoel. I make KZread videos documenting my recovery from a kidney transplant to help anyone who is going through the same experience or for someone looking for some vital details leading up to their transplant.
I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2008 when I was 17 and in Dec 2018 I had a kidney transplant from a living donor (my little brother).
Before my transplant I was an avid runner and took part in lots of 5k Parkruns, multiple Tough Mudder events and the occasional long distance charity run.
I hope you can join me on my journey as I aim to get back to full fitness and show how I can improve my health after my transplant.
Please check out my videos and SUBSCRIBE if you like what you see.
Thanks for stopping by :)

I get my 2nd lazer op on 17th this month I've had a stent for 3.5 months is been HELL unable to hardly walk developed type 2 and blood pressure high..worst thing I've ever been through and even worse than a knee transplant because the stent is 10 times worse pain..8 days to go I get general anasthetic and then lazeroscopy and NO MORE AGONISING DOUBLE J STENT..

I had my stent out 4 hours ago. They used numbing lotion told me they would come back in a few minutes, I waited for the doctor about a half hour, needless to say It was the most painful experience ever and too pee was very painful. (keep in mind there was no string attached to the stent, they sometimes do this, the doctor said, because that way they can take a 18 inch tube and go up thru my uretha into the kidneys to grab the stent left behind and that would not require a another surgery. It was so painful.. ;( So if your string isnt attached to your stent.. all I can say is good Luck.. I litterally had to come home and take a pain pill because Everytime I pee it hurts so paid .. For all you that had a string attached , I bet yours was a breeze to pull out..

Had mine removed this week. I was so happy to get it out - it hurt a lot having it in there. Coming out, very similar, except I'm a woman, so maybe it hurt less. They had me put my heels together and drop my knees out. They cleaned all the bits with something that was VERY COLD! Then the surgeon injected some lidocaine. That felt weird and slightly uncomfortable, and burned a little. They cover you up while they wait a few min for the lidocaine to work. The rest was exactly as you described. He went in with the camera, I could watch on the screen. He found the stent, sprayed some water in, told me to take a deep breath, and pulled it out. Weirdest feeling in the world, but also relief. Nurse wiped all the bits clean with a warm cloth. Flashbacks to being a baby and having a diaper change!! Then it burned a little for about 30 min. There was a little blood in my urine after but not much. Pretty much back to normal an hour or so later. Having the stent in me was much much worse than the procedure to get it removed.

From the drugs wearing off to the no sleeping, from the catheter being removed to the gas that got pumped into you, from always being worried about tugging to not being in pain to it definitely being better to heal at home... You guys have described my journey nearly to a T after donating my kidney a few weeks ago. You guys are amazing thank you Mark and Jason

Going through this right now. Had a 6mm kidney stone in the ureter. Currently have 2 string out of the tip. Every time I pass liquid hurts like hell. Luckily my stent gets removed only after 5 days. Been through all that not knocked out. Camera. Lights. I hate it when the doctor says look at the screen. Like dude even with the gel it is uncomfortable as hell. Having my last catheter removed, felt like my soul leaving my body

Hello, I was one of the unlucky ones that had kidney stone issues and had to get surgery to remove them. I too was curious if there would be pain during the tube extraction. After watching this video it gave me a little less anxiety and I can tell you know that its been removed…… I over thought the situation completely. They numb the area ahead of time and When they take it out it feels just like peeing after a long movie holding it in. Slight irritation after but all good. Hope this helps you cause it helped me and my anxiety a lot.

Cystoscopy experience varies from patient to patient. Obviously for men due to anatomical differences, it can be much more painful. For many, if not most, it can be excruciating. Had 125 years ago and it was like torture and has left me with a type of PTSD, medical trauma. so when I found out, I had one two days after a kidney transplant. I hit the ceiling. Fortunately, I eventually found the urologist who would remove it under general anesthesia.

I had it removed a few weeks back. It is uncomfortable and not fun but it's tolerable. They numbed the area and it took about 30 seconds from start to finish. The worse thing is the waiting and anticipation. Don't worry too much.

Removing a stent with a string by yourself is a lot easier than going into the clinic and having it removed. I've had both. The one with the string is removed by just a steady pull until it is out entirely. The one without a string requires going into the hospital or clinic and having a urology team literally digging around in your privates.

Hot. White hot. Burning white hot pain that made me feel like my bladder was filled with gasoline and then set alight. THAT is how it felt when my ureteral stent was removed. YMMV, but my mileage well and truly sucked.

Great video again Mark. Like your bro, I had key hold surgery to remove my kidney and they stitched and glued my insertions. However, I’m in week 3 now and my sides still look swollen and it hasn’t really gone down yet. Still sore etc and my lower abdomen is still sore too. Especially to touch. Can you or your bro offer any advice here? Thanks

Really good video. I had my left kidney removed recently too and can relate to what you’re saying. It’s been 2.5 weeks since my surgery and although I’m improving, I’m still in a bit of pain. Thanks for sharing your experience guys and giving me an insight to what is to come.

If they didn't give you meds to stop bladder spasms, ask for some. Those helped a lot. It was still uncomfortable, but tolerable.
