Viking and Biking takes you to sites of historical interst, specifically from the viking age. On two wheels.
The combination comes from my interest in biking and the viking age. While writing the thriller Vikingaprinsessan (The Viking Princess) much of the research was done on on bike, around Gothenburg, and further away with the combination of train and bike. Many interisting sites are easily available by bike in the southern parts of Sweden, as well as in Denmark and Norway, which you will see in this channel.

Great video! Sweden area reminds me a lot like area around Pacific NorthWest here in Seattle :) I'm planning to head back to Korea in two years to ride more route and this time, I'm planning with Brompton clone bike for easy transfer and travel :) keep on riding and looking forward to more vidoes!! 💌
Thanks! I haven't been to the NorthWest corner of the US (yet), but it's interesting to hear about the similarity. Good luck with your plans, Korea is definitely worth a second (or third) visit :)
Amazing places
Greetings from Northern California, I had never heard of this route. Thank you for posting this video. Cheers
Thanks 😊 There are sooo many nice routes, happy cycling!
Nice Video Thank You, and a New Abonnent, grüße Michael
Thanks 😊 I hope you find the videos useful!
Great Video! Looking to get into cycling as I live in a prime spot for this....
I hope you had a pleasant trip to Korea. 😊
Thanks, it was excellent! 😊
Hi - thanks for this video. A question .. did you hire bikes to do this? If so, where? What gears did you need? Thanks Sarah - NZ
We brought our own bikes, by car. If travelling in continental Europe you can take your bike on many trains, but unfortunately still not on the fast, long instance trains. Normal road bike gears are fine in general, but for the steepest part of the pass it was nice with a climbing gear, mainly to be able to go slow without being totally exhausted.
Excellent film Mats, good snappy editing with lots of interesting clips. Must have taken forever. Well done
Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate them! 😊
Intersting video! Nice thanks for sharing, can you please share map of trip
Thanks! I don’t have a map, you can see the route on Google maps. We started cycling in Onomichi, took the Shimanani Kaido to Imabari, followed the coast to Matsuyama, ferry to Hiroshima, biked through the city, train to Fukuoka and ferry to Busan.
The comment that Naver maps and Kakao maps is in Korean only applies the to web versions. Mobile version of these available have facilities mostly in english.
did you camp along the way? or slept in hotels?
We didn’t camp on this trip, but stayed in private rooms, B&Bs and hotels. There is plenty of accommodation along the way to choose from.
Thank you, it was very interesting.
From my personal experience, Japan has better scenery and Korea has better bike paths.
God if only I could find the time to do this!!! It's bad enough finding time to do 30 miles!! Fantastic video people. Greetings from East Anglia your old home.
Thanks for making this video! As a retired Canadian, I’ve cycled east to west across France on the Canal des Deux Mers with my wife, and north to south across the Netherlands and down to Bruges with my brother. For both trips, I booked self-guided tours through a cycle touring company that arranged the hybrid bikes, accommodation and usually also luggage transfer (instead of carrying our clothes in panniers). My brother and I loved Stockholm and the Stockholm Archipelago and have been considering cycling up the Kattegat from Malmo to Oslo, or along the Gota Canal, or a cross-country cycle like yours. Do you have a favorite long distance route in Sweden for the best combination of safety (cycle paths), scenery and accommodation (not tent camping)? Your route on this video looks pretty great! Do you know of any cycle tour companies through which we could book your favorite long distance route? I’d really appreciate any advice you could provide. Cheers!
Great video, I've been cycling with my wife last year from Salzburg to Grado, it was great trip, now looking for new adventure.😂
Schöne Strecken, bin ich auch schon gefahren. Da habts aber einen Schnittfehler drinnen: Zuerst Passau, dann 17km bis Grein und dann Schlögen wird nicht funktionieren, wenn man von West nach Ost fährt. 😂
Another great video! Going there in 2025 with my buddies. This was most helpful. All the best
Thanks! 🙂 Enjoy your tour!
How many days it takes ?
It’s about 600 km one way, so a week or two depending on how much you cycle in a day.
Did u start your bike touring from Korea or Japan?
We started in Japan.
Greetings from California, We did this trip after watching your video and was so happy we did. We did the Danube river with Lake Constance follow by biking and hiking in Switzerland. Thank you for posting this video. It was very helpful! God Bless my friend
Thanks for your kind words and for getting back regarding your trip! It’s really a great biking area. We can also recommend South Korea which has excellent bike routes. For your next trip 😊
Your video inspire me to take same journey from Inssbruck to Venice. So, I am planing to take same journey with my brompton bike coming June. But according to my search for detail route including googling, all of them is guiding me to follow different route from what you took zig zag huphill to reach Nauders(Reschpass). For me, it looks that the route suggested by goolge map is reletavely easier than zigzag uphill you took. Was there any reason why you took zigzag uphill ?
дуже гарно
Спасибо! (If Google Translate is correct) :)
this needs more views, awesome video thanks
Thanks for your kind words! 🙏
Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Very interesting and helpful
I’m glad you liked them 😊
This is super helpful and wonderful video series you've put together. Now I want to travel to japan as well! Thank You.🤩
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it 😊 Go for it!
wow!you createdd best video-work. 😊
Thanks! 😊
did you cross any border control between Germany and Denmark?
No, you don’t even notice where the border is.
Great video !!! Thanks for sharing
Tack för en bra film!
För all del, kul att du tycker om den!
at what time of the year did you ride this? we are planing to do it in mid september to catch some late summer sun in italy
It was early September and indeed summer in Italy with afternoon temperatures close to 30C.
Wow great Video guys. Thank you. Do you have your route recorded anywhere so we can follow it? GPX, Strava, Komoot or such?
Hey. How long did you take toget to Stockholm from Gothenburg, and
And was it enough time? 😊
Hi! About 8 days biking one way. It was enough for some sightseeing, but it really depends on how you want to spend your days.
Very nice beautiful lovely
trying to do a bike tour that goes through this route. did you do it with a company? do you know of any companies that do it? awesome video. so inspired.
Thanks! We did the tour on our own, so I don’t know any tour companies. We took our own bikes in the car and parked it in Linz. Then took the bikes on the train to Landeck and from Vienna. Good luck!
Hi there! Nice one! :) What month did you do it? Did you get wet a lot? :) Greetings from Wroclaw, Poland!
Thanks! It was early September and very, very dry. Lowest temp 10C in the morning in the highest peak, 30C in the low land.
@@matsstading6128 that's great! :) And how mamy cycling days did you need to complet it? My wife and I are thinking of covering the Alpe Adria and Adige Valley in one go from/to Venice in September and now I'm already less concerned about the weather :))
@@MrLeszqo Sounds good :) Yes, September was nice. We started in Innsbruck and it took 10 days to Venice. We didn't go the same way back, but t may take a bit longer as the climb is longer from east to west. Have a great trip!
Thanks for posting this vid..! How many days do you estimate it takes to cycle from Donaueschingen to Vienna? (slow pace for pictures and that kind of thing...) And, would you recommend bringing a tent+sleeping bags for camping along the route or no?
I’m glad you liked it! We haven’t cycled Donaueschingen-Vienna in one go, but it’s almost 800km. If you cycle 50km per day you need 16 cycle days. We have cycled Passau-Vienna twice. First time at a leisurely pace with many stops and it took us almost a week. Second time we speeded through it in 3.5 days so it is really difficult to give advice on required time. But we warmly recommend this route.
There is plenty of accommodation along the route, both camping, rooms and hotels. You don’t need to bring a tent. We have never booked ahead and always found a vacancy, but camping is of course less expensive.
@@matsstading6128 Super helpful... thanks very much..!
Seems pretty good to bike, amazing video
Thanks! It’s indeed a great route which I warmly recommend.
Looks like a nice ride, can you share a GPX/KML file?
Thanks! I don’t have the complete gpx-file, but I have listed the routes we followed in the text for the video, and you can find them on opencyclemaps.org.
Great video! I never thought of biking Sweden! Thanks for planting that seed! Was going to bike the Danube again next year but who knows....
Hey buddy, Great video! I was going to bike the Daube next year with a couple of friends but now you got me thinking of Lake Constance. Maybe both lol. All the best from California
Thanks,I’m glad you liked it. Try both, or at least part of the Danube trail. They are quite close to each other :)
@@matsstading6128 Ok my friend because of this video we booked Lake Constance for 5 days . We then head to Passau to bike to Vienna followed by biking in Switzerland. Thanks for posting these videos. Amazing job my friend! All the best
Wow, Great video. Very informative! Thanks for posting
Thanks for watching, I’m glad you liked it 😊
What bag are you using on your rear rack? Nice video!
Thanks! The bag is a modified, waterproof Ortlieb Velocity back pack. I have attached a MIK plate (www.mik-click.com) and added extra padding on the back and changed the shoulder straps. The MIK plate clicks on to my rack (also Ortlieb) and the straps are thin enough to be folded under a cover. I couldn’t find an easily detatchable rackpak over 20 litres, so this solution has worked nicely for many trips.
@@matsstading6128 awesome! Great idea. Thanks heaps
10000th viewer ❣️🥳🌟😘
Wow! 🙏
Why tf, don't you know Sweden is the birthplace of most nightmares
Lovely!!! I like to do that during my Cycling Tour in Switzerland!!!
Very nice, well paced video. Thumbs up. And three new subscribers here 🤗 Danke!
Thanks! 😊
Great video
Thanks! 😊
