Bikepacking the Danube bike route from the source in Donaueschingen to Passau at the Austrian border

The bike route along the Danube river runs from Germany all the way to the Black Sea and coincides with Eurovelo 6. The section from Passau to Vienna is especially popular due to easy cycling along the river accompanied by spectacular scenery and immaculate routing. This video starts at the source of the Danube in Donaueschingen and takes you to Passau via Ulm and Regensburg. The route is in total 600 km. We compare this first part of the Danube route with the Passau-Vienna section, which you can find in our video on bikepacking from Innsbruck via Passau to Vienna: • Bike touring from Inns... .

I'm here for the old Vikings, even if their route to the Black Sea was different from yours. Thanks for the good description of your route. I'd like to do it myself someday.

Thanks for watching! It was difficult to find any connection this time to vikings as they sailed almost all other European rivers, except the Danube. But I can still warmly recommend the bike route.

Thanks for posting this vid..! How many days do you estimate it takes to cycle from Donaueschingen to Vienna? (slow pace for pictures and that kind of thing...) And, would you recommend bringing a tent+sleeping bags for camping along the route or no?

I’m glad you liked it! We haven’t cycled Donaueschingen-Vienna in one go, but it’s almost 800km. If you cycle 50km per day you need 16 cycle days. We have cycled Passau-Vienna twice. First time at a leisurely pace with many stops and it took us almost a week. Second time we speeded through it in 3.5 days so it is really difficult to give advice on required time. But we warmly recommend this route.

There is plenty of accommodation along the route, both camping, rooms and hotels. You don’t need to bring a tent. We have never booked ahead and always found a vacancy, but camping is of course less expensive.
