    As you would have heard, a volunteer was keen to share information. In Dutch and in English... all normal here in Flanders! Even French and German, if necessary. He was saying that the zookeepers had watched the baby jumping around by itself already. The lemurs mostly eat vegetables and greens from the garden and flowers. I was really early, so the family was still half asleep together. About 20 minutes later, they started moving, and the baby appeared. Papa Oreo keeps more to himself. This is the extended version of my reel on Instagram. Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍

    Please read my reply to Terri Jo. Thanks! Imagine that whole herd in the much smaller enclosure in Zoo Antwerpen! At the time of Kai-Mook's birth, there were even more. Matriarch Dumbo died a few years ago. She was 40 years old and the only one coming from the wild as a youngster, so many years ago. I don't know the one from the other well enough, to be honest. And then certainly not from afar and outside. The daughters are already quite big meanwhile. It was easier when they were still younger. But l'm pretty sure it was Kai-Mook giving her daughter Tun Kai a push @3:36 😆😂 Kai-Mook is the biggest cow, and she has short tusks, but those are not always visible. I could only see that when l watched my original videoclip in close-up. The cow to the right is May Tagu, Kai-Mook's half-sister, recognizable by her crooked tail. She also has a daughter, Suki. And of course, elephant bull Kanvar is the biggest and with longer tusks. Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍 I had a reel on Instagram first about Kai-Mook's birthday, shorter than this video. Some of our friends commented on there already.

But l didn't want to miss the opportunity to see Kai-Mook and the other elephants. This was recorded on Tuesday 14th because l couldn't make it on the 17th. Kai-Mook got a surprise treat on her birthday. I follow both zoos on Instagram and they both reported about it. They don't forget 'our' Kai-Mook's birthday, and the fans don't either! 😄👍

I'm only recording. 😉😅 Afterwards, watching the videoclips, l had a chuckle how Gust stood still and watched me - or probably the phone - for a while. He's not afraid of people. (and I'm not afraid of him 😉) In fact, that last time, he pushed my leg aside to get the meat. 😄 l gave the zookeeper a thumbs up for throwing the piece so close to me, so he kept on doing it and even closer. The zookeeper who was commenting did the same on the other side, and the people there were enthusiastic as well, even the young children.

    I had a video about the carnival parade in a neighbouring municipality last year. There wasn't a carnival society in Kapellen anymore after existing for decades. This year, a new society was established and they had their own tour. The wagons /floats participate on several parades. When you go watch the ones in the same area, you would notice that. We get a few from the Netherlands as well, as we're so close to the border. Thank you for your comment, Emily. 😀👍

    What is the parade celebrating?

  • @carinagryp6264
    @carinagryp6264Ай бұрын

    The parade is helt for the occasion of carnival, a Catholic tradition coming from way back. It's the last chance to eat and feast before the weeks of fasting start. As you could see, people also dress up for the occasion. It's somewhat similar to your Halloween, which is celebrated here only for the last decades or so. As many carnival societies organise their own parade in their own municipality, they can't be helt all at the same time, so it's divided over several weekends. In fact, the actual carnival period was at the beginning of March. Schools have a week off because of it and the day before the vacation starts, the children are allowed to come to school all dressed up and have their own parade. Parents and grandparents are invited to watch it all.

There are not so many male lions of this species with good genes available in the breeding programme, apparently. That's why Nestor was moved. They reckoned 6 cubs with Tasa is a sufficiently representative number. Thank you for your comment, Traci! 😀👍

    Hi! I'm glad I read the description (as I always do on your videos) - I thought at first the news was much sadder. So he's going to be moved to another zoo. He will definitely be missed! • @carinagryp6264

    Hi, Emily! Yeah... l had a doubt about what l would put in the title. That's why l preferred bye-bye instead of goodbye, which sounds harsher, in my opinion. The planned move of Nestor came as a surprise on social media and in newspapers, only a few days before it would take place. Nestor has a fair number of fans, as he's been in the zoo all his life. That creates a certain bond, as you can imagine. There is even a FB page for the zoo created by fans, and l was told it was overflowing with messages! It's sad, but at least the other lions remain at the zoo for now. Whisker is a favourite to me and many others because he's always been such a patient and playful big brother for his younger siblings. My last visit dates from February 9th, and l was surprised to see how much those had grown into young adult lions. And yes, their behaviour is often similar to what we know from our kitty cats! 😉😄😻👍 Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍

  • @carinagryp6264

    @emilyinoregon6967 l suppose so. Tasa and Nestor were truly a loving couple, as you could witness in the older clips. I added those on purpose to show you. And all of the cubs clearly adored their dad. We can't be sure how much of an impact this will have on the lion family. In the wild, older males are driven away by younger ones, that's how it goes in nature. In fact, it was a bit of an unnatural situation here with Whisker still being around. But he can't mate with his mom or sisters, of course. Is the lion family also affected by this as the gorilla family obviously was? I don't know! It will be interesting to see during a next visit or maybe read about it on the zoo's information pages. Thank you for your question, Emily. I was wondering about it as well. 😀👍

    Moving him is pure ignorance. He has been there all his life. He is getting a little older. He should have been left there with his family the rest of his life. This simply cruel and cannot be justified. I will stop watching. It is my hope that all the people involved in thus decision should lose their families in a tragic and horrible way. It will happen.

  • @carinagryp6264
    @carinagryp62642 ай бұрын

    @anthonyg2554 It's not because l report about this that l also agree with it, you know. Moving animals between zoos is kind of a trade that could be considered similar to the trade in exotic animals, taken from the wild, in my opinion. People put them in breeding programmes as they see fit, not considering the damage it could bring to the animals involved. And thus it's not a surprise to me that dramas ensue. Nestor was put together with lionesss Maya much too soon and he killed her! Bellewaerde Park opens for the 2024 season on March 30th. Apparently, they wanted to show all the lions together to the public by that time but it was much too early. The lions didn't get the proper time to get acquainted, not with the new environment nor with each other. And now they have learned a horrifying lesson of which Maya became the victim.

But the fans are glad at least he stays in our country, so visits will be possible. All this is being done to keep the breeding lines healthy, but for Nestor, it was rather stressful because he has lived in Zoo Antwerpen his whole life. Hopefully, it will turn out fine and he will be father of new cubs in future.

    @user-he1ub8oz3b Yes, he did after his move to Bellewaerde Park, only a few weeks ago. It's always a risk when lions are introduced to each other, particularly with older lions like 12 years old Nestor. In my opinion, they decided to get Nestor and Maya together too soon. It should have taken a much longer period of time! Sadly, Maya became the victim of that decision.

    At one point, all the gorillas were infected with the covid virus. The females and the girls recovered fairly quickly, but not dad Matadi. When he caught a bacterial infection on top of it, everything was tried to get him cured, but he got too weak. In coordination with the zookeepers, the zoo vet decided to have him euthanized. His body was sent to a Flemish university to do extended research. That way, gentle giant Matadi could still be meaningful to help other gorillas. The gorillas were allowed to say goodbye to their leader, as it is known to benefit the group. Gorillas in the wild are known to have a ritual for dealing with the loss of a group member. For quite some time, the zookeepers noticed how the gorillas were much less active and playful. Fortunately, as was shown in the video, they got on in life after the loss. The visitors also missed him so much! He was the favourite to a lot of people, as he was such a playful and patient dad to his daughters. Thank you for your comment. 😀👍

    they need more room

    This is only the indoor enclosure and only parts are visible in the video. More room is not so much important, in my opinion. Having a lot of things for enrichment purposes, activity, keeping them busy and playing is a more important issue. The zookeepers have installed plenty of new ones recently. As l mentioned in my description, the gorillas are kept indoors during winter. Freezing temperatures are not ideal for them. After all, in the wild, these gorilla species are animals of the tropical jungle in Congo, Africa. You can find videos of the gorillas in the big outdoor enclosure on my videos list if you are interested in watching those. Thank you for your comment. 🙂👍

    Love the girls. Thank for video. I haven’t seen this family in a while. I am sure they miss the Silverback. That was tragic loosing him. Best wishes. Love the video and thank you for sharing.

    Thank you for your comment, Emily. 😀👍 I just love watching them and how by now l recognise each individual. I was so pleased to see that the 2 girls were playing again. Around 4:50 Amahoro is standing tall, moving her head from one side to the other. The zookeeper told me that's the way gorillas want to show : look at me! I'm the strongest/biggest! That's another sign Amahoro will probably take over leadership.
