2 NEW LION CUBS! - Zoo Planckendael (B) - zoovenirs (55)
The goal of my visit of Zoo Planckendael on 15/12/23 was : watching the new Asiatic lion cubs!
Mama Lorena gave birth to 2 new lion cubs on 04/10/23. Now that they are over 2 months old, they are strong enough to follow their mom in the outdoor enclosure. The zoo vet hasn't checked them nor chipped them yet, so the gender remains unknown for now.
They walked around at the far edge of the enclosure, so this is as good as it gets with the camera of my phone.
A lot of people were taking photos, most of them with professional equipment. l can't compete with those! 😉😅
Apparently, Lorena didn't like all the people and all the clicking noises. She roared a few times to say : back off!

Hi, Emily! Thank you for your comment! 🤗👍 I'm sure you noticed how similar these kitties are playing with each other, like kittens of our domestic cats do and that's so much fun to watch. I could watch it for a long time, but because of the crowd, l couldn't. And l didn't want to hold up my friends too long. They're not so much cat fanatics like we are. 😄 In any case, this will be a good reason to visit Zoo Planckendael more often. 😀👍

Not a clue about the gender. As they were born this year, their names should start with a Y and preferably some Indian word, as these Asiatic lions only live in a reserve there. The voting will start as soon as the vet checked them and knows the gender. I'll keep you posted! 😉😀👍 Thank you for your comment! 🤗👍

@emilyinoregon6967 Yes, correct, next year all names of the newborn animals will start with a Z. In 2025, it just starts over again with A. This system is used in a number of zoos, but problem is, they haven't started with A in the same year. So that can be rather confusing. In the case of the lions here, Lorena was born herself in Zoo Planckendael in 2010 (l have a list made up for the years and the corresponding letter. 😉 ) Papa Jari is younger than she is, although the letter suggests otherwise. He came from a zoo in the UK. Other zoos just give random names, of which they think they suit the particular animal.
