Apple treats! Happy 15th birthday to Kai-Mook - Zoo Planckendael (B) - Zoovenirs (62)

Happy 15th birthday to Kai-Mook
On 17/05/2009, Kai-Mook was born, being the first ever elephant born in Zoo Antwerpen.
It got a lot of media attention. People could follow it live on a big screen at the Flamingo Square and it was broadcasted by the local TV channel. Kai-Mook was even officially registered in the city's administration of births.
In 2012, a life-size bronze statue of a playful Kai-Mook was inaugurated, created by the internationally known artist Ronald De Winter. It was placed in front of the Egyptian temple, where Kai-Mook was born.
That same year, the whole of the elephant family was moved to a vast new enclosure in Zoo Planckendael. Kai-Mook got pregnant and gave birth to daughter Tun Kai in 2018.
A lot of people became loving fans instantly and follow her still, visiting her and her family as much as possible.
At first, the elephants were just standing together in the outdoor enclosure. As soon as the zookeeper made the noise with the bucket, the elephants knew that apple treats would be thrown in the water. Sometimes they even play and dive into the water, but not this time.

Thank YOU for your comment, Terri Jo! 😀👍 As my travel time to Zoo Planckendael is much longer than the one to Zoo Antwerpen, l don't visit it often. But l didn't want to miss the opportunity to see Kai-Mook and the other elephants. This was recorded on Tuesday 14th because l couldn't make it on the 17th. Kai-Mook got a surprise treat on her birthday. I follow both zoos on Instagram and they both reported about it. They don't forget 'our' Kai-Mook's birthday, and the fans don't either! 😄👍

Aww, happy birthday! 🎂 Elephants are such lovely and intelligent animals, and it warms my heart to see them being treated well and celebrated.

Please read my reply to Terri Jo. Thanks! Imagine that whole herd in the much smaller enclosure in Zoo Antwerpen! At the time of Kai-Mook's birth, there were even more. Matriarch Dumbo died a few years ago. She was 40 years old and the only one coming from the wild as a youngster, so many years ago. I don't know the one from the other well enough, to be honest. And then certainly not from afar and outside. The daughters are already quite big meanwhile. It was easier when they were still younger. But l'm pretty sure it was Kai-Mook giving her daughter Tun Kai a push @3:36 😆😂 Kai-Mook is the biggest cow, and she has short tusks, but those are not always visible. I could only see that when l watched my original videoclip in close-up. The cow to the right is May Tagu, Kai-Mook's half-sister, recognizable by her crooked tail. She also has a daughter, Suki. And of course, elephant bull Kanvar is the biggest and with longer tusks. Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍 I had a reel on Instagram first about Kai-Mook's birthday, shorter than this video. Some of our friends commented on there already.
