Visit Zoo Planckendael (23/06/23) - zoovenirs (44)

Follow me on my tour in Zoo Planckendael, looking at some of the animals.
- Black lemurs are different in colour. The males are black, but the females are red. Babies are born with a red fur also, as a protection, because they cling to the females and don't stick out that way. After a few weeks, the colour of the boys changes to black. Not for Yuna, she's a girl.
-6 years old orangutan boy Ombak looked so sad and lonely, after losing his mom unexpectedly a few weeks ago. Orangutan babies and youngsters are cared for by their mothers until they are about 8 years old. Orangutan dads don't share the caring.
- One of the main differences between European and American bison is their size. European bison are taller, because they have longer legs. The American bison is heavier and has a hairier body, but its tail is less hairy.
European and American bison also hold their heads differently, and this has an effect on their diet. European bison hold their neck naturally higher, as they are browsers, whereas American bison hold the neck lower, as they are grazers.
The horns of the European bison point more forward, used for fighting by locking horns. The horns of the American bison point more sideways and upwards as they fight by butting and charging.

They are! I was there quite early and the ring-tailed lemurs were still warming up. Remember the meerkats in ZooAntwerpen? They also like to sit in the early sunbeams, belly towards the sun. 🥰👍 Thank YOU for your comment, Emily! 😀👍

It looks that way, indeed. 😉😀 But at the moment l was standing there and taking the photo, l thought it to be a sad sight because Ombak lost his mom recently. To me, it looked like he was thinking what to do on his own from now on... 😪 Fortunately, meanwhile, we got a post from Zoo Planckendael on Instagram, showing Ombak having fun in a puddle of mud, so it seems he's quite OK. Thank you for your comment, Leon! 😊👍

@leonsdenin Oh, l see. 😉😅 It was so funny and cute how (s)he was sitting there, indeed. 😄🥰 (S)he was still warming up with the sun on her/his belly, and apparently knew just the spot to do so. 😉👍 (S)he didn't even move when l passed there. The ring-tailed lemurs and black lemurs are living in a walk-through enclosure, so they are used to visitors.

Each time l visited Zoo Planckendael, l wondered about that, so during the last visit, l decided to take photos of both and look it up. I didn't expect so many differences! But l did expect that you would find it interesting as well. 😉😄👍 Thank you for your comment, Traci! 😊👍
