Het HAVENHUIS / PORT HOUSE - Antwerpen (Belgium)
Het HAVENHUIS / PORT HOUSE is a government building located in the Antwerp area of Eilandje and acts as the new headquarters of the Antwerp Port Authority.
The structure was designed by Iraqi-British artist Zaha Hadid. It opened in 2016, the year of her death. The quayside in front of the Port House was named Zaha Hadid plein (square) to honour her.
The older building on which it is constructed, used to be a fire station, and is a protected replica of a Hanseatic house. Thus, it could not be demolished and had to be integrated into the new project.
The structure resembles the hull of a sailing ship, referring to the world-known port of Antwerpen, second largest shipping port of Europe, handling 26℅ of Europe's container shipping.
The facets of the glass-covered facade refer also to the diamond business, for which Antwerpen is equally a world-known centre.

It was the first time l got 'up close and personal' to the Havenhuis. I always see it appear from a distance, sitting on the train to and from Antwerpen. When l got off at the station to where it is located the closest, it turned out the distance was deceiving. It was quite a walk still to reach it. 😄😛 Now that Jennifer and Sophie will come visit again (14 + 15th of August) , l wanted to find some other interesting sights to explore. This was one of them l got in mind. I actually find it amusing myself to do this. It certainly is something different from the zoo. 😉😅 Maybe other buildings will get our attention too. Wait and see... 😉😄 Thank you for your comment, Emily! 😀👍

It does, doesn't it. I was coming on purpose from another direction, from the train station that is closest to it, so from home by train towards Antwerpen.Walking towards it over a bridge, l saw it appear above the roofs of the wooden storage buildings (at the beginning of the video) and it looked as if it was sailing on top of the roofs. A sight you can't see, coming from the centre of the city. I always had seen it, sitting on the train to Antwerpen, so that's why l tried it out. It was quite a longer distance to get there than it appeared to be, though! 😉😀 Thank you for your comment, Jennifer! 😊👍

Oh yes, of course... you know this building from Instagram posts of the city! 😉😀👍 I'm not sure whether you can go up to have a look inside. We will have to find out when Jennifer and Sophie will be here. Maybe you'll have to book it. Thank you for your comment, Traci! 😀👍

@@carinagryp6264 you can go inside and have a tour with a guide as far as I know. I think the building itself is free and the part with the glass is with a guide.
