Blue Jay Bonsai

Blue Jay Bonsai

Welcome to Blue Jay Bonsai.

We are a father and son team of Jay & James, newcomers to the world of bonsai.
(Note: James is off to University since Sept 2022 so I am mostly on my own)

Inspired by fellow club members @Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone and @MaybeBonsai, we decided to start recording the progress of our trees, and the things we see, learn and do in the world of bonsai, just to share with family and friends.
But, you are more than welcome to follow along and learn from our mistakes, and enjoy the journey with us.

*** Remember - we are real amateur hobbyists - so keep that in mind when watching (and laughing?) ***

I'm really surprised to hear and see your comments about no dieback on amur maples since my research into them has many people saying they do experience dieback, sometiems very unpredictably and considerably. I even saw one post on bonsai nut saying to leave as much as 6 inches for potential dieback! I haven't done much to my young amur so I can't speak to this myself. How is it faring now?

Oh it’s because there is oxygen in straight water. Think of hydroponics. But in wet water logged soil there is no oxygen so the roots will rot. I just learned that so had to share.

"Hello roots " is the best sign for a strong and healthy plant, especially in bonsai world.

I seem to be fighting a battle with mealy bugs on my trees. The first spray I did with neem oil was a bit strong, all my teas dropped their leaves. Now when I respray I just keep adding water to the mixture. I seem to have the bugs under control and the leaves are slowly coming back.

I love Ming aralia. I currently have three of them. They are a different bonsai subject for sure, but make a nice presentation in a very short time.

Making a bonsai tree is a very laborious task and preparing the plants in this way takes a lot of effort. You are a very hardworking person and your plants are very beautiful and nice.
