Bonsai Air Layer Updates - Chinese Privet & Willow Leaf Ficus
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It's time to check on the progress of a few bonsai tree air layers in progress.. A Chinese Privet and a Willow Leaf Ficus. Will there be roots? or Will it be a failure?
Of course, if successful, a bit of (re)potting, pruning and styling will be needed!

The Privet is on the way but the Ficus roots are camera shy! Loved Matt's Schefflera, a real beauty!

What joy seeing those roots, thanku Jay. I’ve been standing my pond baskets in over large nursery pots to keep sun off but allow air circulation, you’re welcome!! God bless you 🙏✝️ ✌️🇺🇦🌻✌️

The subscriber pics section is uncommon to other KZreadrs. Thanks for sharing our trees on your channel as we progress and learn from you along the way. I love the privet's airlayer outcome. Good job! And for the willow ficus, I'd try to airlayer 1 branch again and the other branch into cutting. With ficus, I have had success with both methods.

I have successful airlayers with Japanese maples, junipers and forsythia. Although the forsythia callused over 2 times but eventually it struck roots. Isn’t it possible just to cut that ficus and root it like a big cutting? Or would that be too hard wood.
Good video nice sharing

Cool! 😎 For one "school day" with Nigel and two trees for the same prize! Keeping my fingers crossed the ficus will take this time.. 😶 Thanks for the update! 😁💚 I've been thinking of doing an airlayer on an oak close by, its too close to the train tracks and will be cut down eventually anyway, so why not. Might go prune it back these days and leave the airlayer for next year. Very nice schefflera Matt 💚💚💚

Nice air layers, I recently removed a Japanese maple air layer and it came out really nice. I tried not to mess with the roots too much, but I had to do some work. Shame on the ficus air layering, I would have just tried to root the cutting in water. I have used those types of plastics, but I was able to 3d print the size I needed. Thanks for sharing!!

..carnage is so necessary. Very nice Air layer and a cool free tree. Congrats! Also, I've seen tags held on by wire that was left on too long become a tourniquet, and well short story long roots! even without the cut or the medium or the hormone stuffs...zip ties are handy also.

Thanks for this. I have never seen those plastic air layer thingymajigs before - though I had heard of them. I presume they allow water / moisture to get in or are they so efficient that you dont need to worry about the moss staying moist? Love the volume of roots you got from that first Ficus :) I get the impression KW Bonsai are building a good group of creators now.

Cool! That was a lot of roots. Maybe the other stayed too dry? You can use butcher twine like a wick. insert it through the moss an into a cup of water near the same level, but not higher. The butcher twine will wick the water to the moss to absorb it.

@@BlueJayBonsai awesome!! I thought it was crazy when they told me about it in my class.
Hi Jay. Just a thought but Ficus are renowned for producing quite a lot of latex from wounds. Could this have helped your 'scabbing over' and hence the bridging of your ring-barking and no root formation as a result. I may be barking up the wrong tree but it's something that came to mind. 😀😀
