$50 Bonsai Challenge - Will a visit to Tropical Expressions help me win?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A visit to Tropical Expressions bonsai store might just give me the upper hand in the $50 DIY Bonsai Challenge started by Carlos from @BonsaiYEAH and continued by @TheBonsaiZone.
See what trees and pots I considered, and then the final choice!
Of course, the challenge is not complete without the repotting, pruning and styling.
I am challenging Dave from @DavesBonsai next!
And maybe Gerardo from @gerardoforesthillsbonsai might want to get in on the action too?

What a tight little composition you put together, brother! The movement in the trunk is pretty wicked. You definitely nailed the challenge. And as always, loved the root work. I don’t envy the repotting with the way the pot is shaped internally. You’ll either need a shoe-horn, or have to crack it open like an egg.

Maybe it won't be that hard. That soil mix is pretty loose. You might be able to gently work enough soil free with a chopstick or bamboo skewer without damaging the roots too much. It depends on how thickly the roots fill in.

This is "Offurcially" one of our favorite videos!! Love this concept!! Really demonstrates that Bonsai is both affordable and "doable" for people like us, who haven't jumped into yet. Just a great and entertaining instructional video Jay. Questions (maybe a topic for future video?) Why do you cut so many roots of ? How does the plant survive with what seems to be no nutrients in the soil ? At what point would you need to transfer into a bigger "pot", if ever? How long and when do you know you can take the wire off ? The sphagnum moss role, is to hold moisture? This video should be shared a ton and could be called "How to Bonsai" 😁😁😁 Please don't feel you need to answer all the questions!! It's a compliment we had so many lol !! Have a great day and again, awesome video !! Cheers J&C 🌱🌱🌱
@BlueJayBonsai
2 жыл бұрын
🌟Thanks guys! So many questions.. this is supposed to be fun, not homework!! 😂🤣🐦💙
@BlueJayBonsai
2 жыл бұрын
🌟1. We cut off so many roots for several reasons. In this specific case I needed to just to fit the tree in the pot! Otherwise there was no room for soil. In general, we are trying to create a nice root base that widens and tapers into the soil, with radial roots coming out all around the tree. So root work is required to chop off non-radial, and uneven growth roots. We want the roots to be equal in size more or less. Cut the strong ones, let the weak ones grow.. Second, we want many fine roots, not a few big ones. When the roots ramify and grow many many fine ones, the branches above can also get ramified and grow more and more tapering in size of the branches. Also, it helps to promote smaller leaf growth, which helps create the really big (but actually miniature) mature tree effect. Some say - ‘as below - so above’.
@BlueJayBonsai
2 жыл бұрын
🌟With inorganic (or mostly inorganic) soil (we also call it substrate as we use no actual soil), we have to fertilize the trees. We need fast draining soil to prevent root rot and overwatering in the pot. It also encourages the fine branching root growth as mentioned in the last comment.. When you control the fertilizer, you can also determine if you want more fertilizer for initial quick growth for starting development.. or if you want you can use less fertilizer, because you now have a fat trunk and want the branches to grow with small internodes between leaves… which helps the miniature effect. Soil scientists such as Gardening in Canada also agree that this is the best way for soilless growing. We also draw inspiration from other soilless growing like hydroponics and the cannabis industry.
@BlueJayBonsai
2 жыл бұрын
🌟You have to check your trees daily and check all the trees with wire to see if it is ‘biting in’. (Actually the tree is starting to swallow the wire). A little bit of bite is ok as it gives a better chance of the branch keeping the new wired shape. Too much can leave deep scars that may never heal, or will take years to heal. Or of course, could choke off a branch and kill it. It all depends on the tree species, how fast it’s growing, time of year.. I think I will have take off this wire in the fall. But we’ll see. And yes, many times you have to wire and retire multiple times to get the final shape. (The only finished tree is a dead one 😂)
@BlueJayBonsai
2 жыл бұрын
🌟Yes, the sphagnum moss is great for maintaining moisture and insulating the roots from heat or cold. The fancy moss has the same effects, but definitely is for ‘show’ too.
I think pruning would be first so that it is easier for you to work with the tree roots and pot. Just a thought Jay.

Something different Jay. Try a Pereskia Grandiflora, Rose Cactus. Has a woody trunk. Ask. They might have one or can get it for you.
Really nice tree, well done! I was leaning towards the windswept style, but the final composition is actually better!
