I hated Second Hand News when the record first came out. On record the guitar sounded like a mosquito bug buzzing the ear. JMHO.

I’ve only heard 3 Neil Young albums so far so there’s not a lot of songs that I’m familiar with. My personal favorite is Old Man. Glad to see Heart of Gold and After the Gold Rush get represented.

Great lists. I agree with most of the choices here. As long as you don’t have any Yoko songs on here I’m happy. Personally Jealous Guy is my favorite song.

I wouldnt have thought this would be the case when I bought it in 1994 - but these days I listen to Teenager of the Year much more than any of the Pixies albums. It's a brilliant record.

'Blue bell knoll' is their masterpiece for me, I totally agree with Ryan here. 'Blue Bell Knoll", "Heaven or Las Vegas" and "Four-calendar cafe" are a fantastic trio of albums and the best they ever sounded IMO but BBK is definitely the best of all of them.

Of all of the albums in this series so far, I was most interested to see Dylan S's take on this one--and I am disappointed that he is lukewarm on it! Not so much because I love it (I don't), but because a surprising number of Dylan fans rank this one quite highly and I was hoping Dylan S could help show me the light. I end up revisiting this album quite a bit just because I find it interesting even if it isn't quite a favorite. With all of Dylan S's mentions of covers I'm surprised that Jerry Garcia's many live covers of Señor didn't come up but then again I don't know how Dylan S feels about Jerry and/or the Dead.

Joe seems like such a nice guy so it feels like quite a juxtaposition to see albums with creepy artwork (Holy Bible, Megadeth), dark goth vibes (N. Cave, NIN), Biggie's fairly explicit masterpiece, and a few radio friendly Alt-Metal classics (AiC, Soundgarden) that always felt a bit dark to me. But a great list overall. I'm glad to see STP and Live getting their flowers from both of you since these were some of the first CDs Pitchfork told us to place in the garbage when the Internet exploded and some of us let the hipsters rent space in our heads. I'm far from an audiophile but Definitely Maybe always sounded tough on my ears even though I think there is good music under that loudness wars mix. I need to spend more time with Grace as I never quite "got it" and it's reputation seems to increase with each passing year. Totally agree on 90s hip hop albums overdoing the skits that are at best, moderately funny on the first listen and annoying on subsequent listens. De La Soul needs to eat more crap for popularizing that terrible trend.

A very interesting record, a 3.5 for me! I really love the song Muchacha (Ojos de Papel) from it, and have it on my ‘My Songs of 1970’ playlist on Spotify, but it’s definitely a bit of a mixed bag. ❤ Also, I love the colorful long sleeve shirt, Jason! Very 60s and I love it. 😊

I'm a sucker for Color Humano-type extended jams. It's got psych of its era but also reminds of indie (Built to Spill?) many decades later. Ana No Duerme good- a bit like CSNY Wooden Ships occasionally.

The cover art is ahead of its time, anticipating the South Korean animation character Mashimaro - not to mention the Barbiecore music trend we're in at this instant coffee. Some of the solos could stand for a retake - a little sloppy, not unlike Claire Bishop's reasoning in her new book on the effects of the Internet and devices on contemporary art. I give it a 0.3, which is a hemp standard allowing for biodegradable plastics to be introduced on the US market and going against Big Oil obstructionism.

I'm also at 3.5 here, interesting pick...and yet you're right, it's not easy to do an album like this justice, especially in terms of comparisons with UK or US releases from the same era.

Really liked this one. I guess you could call it psyche folk, but it's a mixture of different elements including rock and jazz. The vocals are lovely, really tuneful as is the music. Some really nice background harmonies. The songs sound pretty different from one another yet hang together nicely. I checked out the lyrics to try to get a handle on what these songs were about. I think a lot gets lost in translation, but there seems to be a fair amount of surrealism going on. These songs often take the listener on a journey to different places with changes in tempo and time signature. "Color humano" is probably the most rock-oriented thing here. At over nine minutes, it is indeed a journey. It might stay in one lane a little too long at one point while the electric guitar peels off psychedelic runs, but I'm really not complaining: it's a cool song. But my favorite is "Plegaria para un niño dormido" which I think has the most exquisite melodies here, just gorgeous. I think I'm going 4.25 for this album which is "very, very good." I just can't completely connect to this due to the language barrier (which is usually the case with these foreign language albums). But this is fantastic stuff, and I would happily hear it a third time or more.

I went into this one expecting to love it. I did not. I enjoyed the rocker songs much more than the folksy songs, but the production did hold back the best played parts of the album. Color Humano was the high point of the album for me, which had me expecting more. Unfortunately, it never reached that peak again. I gave it a 3.5, but it is a light 3.5. Maybe with more listens I can grow to appreciate it more, but for now I am just not loving it like I wanted to.

I had pretty similar thoughts about this overall. I enjoyed it and thought it was a good listen but yes, definitely not a lost classic. I even found myself thinking "is a big part of why this is so highly rated on RYM because of the history around it?" when listening. It does feel very formative especially after already hearing better stuff Luis Alberto Spinetta would go on to do later. Even still, there were some good songs and it was cool to hear. It's always interesting to learn about the music from countries and scenes outside the albums we grew up hearing. Also a 3.5 for me.

Not a big fan of the 90's but '94 was one of the better years of the decade. Couldn't get to 25, so here is my top 11: 1. Definitely Maybe - Oasis (beat Blur this year but on the whole, Blur ended up with much the better back catalogue) 2. Monster - R.E.M 3. Dog Man Star - Suede 4. His n Hers - Pulp 5. Protection - Massive Attack 6. MTV Unplugged in New York - Nirvana 7. Parklife - Blur 8. Dummy - Portishead 9. The Holy Bible - Manic Street Preachers 10. File Under Easy Listening - Sugar 11. Sleeps with Angels - Neil Young Loving these deep dive shows!

I tried to convey it in my comment on Joe's list video... but 1994 is loaded. Love seeing Impossible Bird, Foolish (iykyk), Amorica, Teenager of the Year... all more than worthy choices that didn't make my Top 25. Dinosaur Jr. too. Great one. Smoking Popes! Completely forgot about that band. It seems like Sponge has had some strange resurgence as of late. Maybe their discography has been getting reissued? Really enjoyed both lists. Definitely one of my favorite years for music ever. But, I'm a gen-xer so... Surprised by no Sloan!

Great to hear your praise for Nick Lowe. I really only know The Beast In Me from The impossible Bird, will have to give the whole set a play. If he plays live near you I highly recommend. Especially if he is backed by Los Straitjackets. Blur - Parklife Jeff Buckley - Grace Johnny Cash - American Recordings Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Brutal Youth I am really surprised Elvis didn't sneak into either of your lists. Ed Kuepper - Character Assassination Morrissey - Vauxhaul & I Another one I was thinking would sneak onto at least one of your lists. Still my favorite solo Morrissey. Elliott Smith - Roman Candle Suede - Dog Man Star

I never heard of this band before. I saw the album Drastic Plastic within the albums listed by a seller on Ebay and sampled it and i recognized the first song since i have it on a 80's mix cassette that someone made me years ago. I purchased the original release album on lp and then Bill Nelson's On A Blue Wing original release album on lp too after i sampled it and i didn't put two and two together that Bill Nelson is the lead singer of Be-Bop Deluxe. LOL!

Get A Grip at #13??!! Are you "Crazy" ?(pun intended) You need to get a grip. You probably weren't even born yet when the album came out. None of you guys probably were. I've been a fan of Aerosmith since 1988. Get A Grip is a monster of an album! Easily one of the best hard rock albums from the early 90s. The 3 ballads are all "Amazing" (pun intended again) classics. The guitar work is top notch. Tyler's vocals are awesome. Kramer's kills it on the drums. Eat The Rich, Line Up, Flesh, Fever, Walk On Down...Also, get the international version which has the extra banger of a song Can't Stop Messin, which should've been on the domestic CD. Whats not to like?? The album is a burner from start to finish. These Gen Z/ millennials need to stick to critiquing their own era of music since they don't know jack squat about ours!
