A great discussion, I’m glad you guys reviewed this album. I like all of The Delfonics singles and remember hearing Philly Soul on the radio when I was a kid. It was weird and cool at the same time hearing ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’ followed up by a radio edit of ‘Roundabout’ circa 1973.

I’ve really fallen in LOVE with with this early to mid 70s soul pop..Delfonics, O’Jays, Five Stairsteps, Spinners, Gil Scott-Heron, Issac Hayes, Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose (Too Late to Turn Back Now is a PERFECT song, one of my favorites ever!)..amazing stuff!! 🖤❤️🤍

I also thought of Jackie Brown. So cool you mentioned that movie, Joe. Tarantino is a master of movie soundtracks.

I really enjoyed this album. I'd listened to it way back in the early days of the Discord because I remember Joe posted a song from it so I checked it out. It was really nice to get back to it and really enjoyed it a lot. I liked side 1 the most especially "When You Get Right Down To It" and "Baby I Love You" but I still thought it was consistent overall. Just a great, easy listen. Yes, it's smooth but I think that is part of the charm. 4 stars for me.

I gave this a 4.0. It started strong, but faded on side 2. Just a little too smooth and too polished for my taste. A little grit would have helped. Still, it was an enjoyable listen and I will certainly play it again. It kind of reminds me of proto Barry White instrumentation, but without the Barry White bass. Thanks for the recommendation, Joe. I probably never would have found this one otherwise.

I love The Philly Sound, but I get Jason's point. I recently re-listenened to French Kiss by Bob Welch, and I wondered how it might've sounded even better without the Disco strings. Fortunately, I'm pretty good with The Philly Sound, so I love French Kiss, but I do get curious sometimes and I wonder if Bob's take on Rockin Disco might've beent better if it were more stripped down. Sometimes, it feels like adding that type of orchestration is just like yelling at me, "Hey! This is The Philly Sound!" Or "Hey, in case you forgot, this is supposed to be Disco with a splash of Rock!" That's not necessary because the rhythm section already tells me if something is Disco or Soul. On the other hand, I wouldn't even want to hear the Ojays without the orchestration. They were just too good with it.

I've always preferred the Philly sound to Motown at the end of the day and The Delfonics were sure a fine example of the subgenre. 4.5 stars for this one.

@@TastesLikeMusic I just mean that it doesn't immediately wow Jason, he doesn't go along with the Dischord, but he also doesn't go for the anti-quote "bowtie on funk". He's searching for how to describe how he feels in real time. Love your appreciation of the album too. I think when the Delfonics hit, they really hit. They're more of a singles band for me. "Didn't I blow your mind", "La la la means", "Ready or not" are faves, but your review makes me want to check this one out.

A good album, but not great. As Jason said: not enough grit; too smooth and polished. La La La Means I Love You" is a stunner of a song though not sure if the album version is the same as the single. I remember thinking what a great song, so moving it is. Bell and Hart? Looked up their later songs and not so impressed though but a fine first album. Disclaimer: coming out of Philly, it's the best we could do, which is a B+. I grew up near Philly and was always surprised that we couldn't be a little more musically competitive. Not that 'Expressway to Your Heart or the Intruders 'Cowboys to Girls were not fantastic songs. But we are definitely not a minny Motown. Just not in love with the O'Jays or The Bluenotes sound. In the Delaware Valley, many still live in shame and I don't mean cause I live there. A lot of good singers past their peak success days come by Philly for one last gasp in the 70s; cheaper studio rentals for Jerry Butler and Laura Nyro and it shows. So sad when Joe asked Jason "what's your goto album to Philly Soul? And Jason can't think of any it reminded me of Prince's Little Red Corvette: when it comes to the Philly sound, "oh no, ain't got enough gas". Prince was singing it about Gamble and Huff.
