    Agree with Joe. This is the problem when you combine individual top 20 lists. People assume the big albums will make it, so they stuff their lists with obscure albums they want to make it, and the result is a completely random list.

  • @TheGerkuman

    @TheGerkuman

    Yeah. It may be a pain to ask people to compile longer lists, but you get a better result, because there's less you have to leave off. A fairer way would be to make a longlist for each decade, cut it down to about 50 for each (giving you 350) and then getting everyone to rank all of them in preferred order, collating the results and cutting it down to to the top 200. Would take a lot of work, but I think it would be more representative.

As I'm writing this, I'm imagining Barry (Jack Black) in High Fidelity, saying that line. It would've worked well with Jack's manic and passionate, over the top delivery.

    What I like about this list (comparatively speaking) is that Country and Jazz get some noticeable representation at the expense of Hip Hop. More variety of genres is always refreshing. As you mentioned, there were some artists over-represented and I saw some weak odd-ball choices, including those Motown albums that contain a few hits and lots of filler. For classic Motown, it's got to be compilations as the label was singles driven during their early peak. I didn't see a lot of Folk or World Music (Fela, Khan, Adé) so it still seems artificially skewed towards pop. The Top 20 looked pretty random but at least that provided some fun observations on your part. I'll echo an earlier comment and suggest Tastes Like Music attempt a list of this magnitude. Enjoyable episode.

    As a Brazilian and die-hard fan of Clube da Esquina, I have to say that it's a very "Brazilian" record (sort of like Acabou Chorare, which I personally think is peak "Brazilian"). Whenever I show it to my foreign friends, they usually react with a "OMG this is the most beautiful record I've ever heard" or "meh, it's alright I guess" (similar to your guys' reactions).

    I'm Brazilian too and love CdE but to see it so high in this list is weird. Honestly they shouldn't mix different cultures in these lists because it makes no sense. If they really wanted then make a top 30, top 50 Brazilian albums, then putting CdE at 12 or higher is fine.

    Any "greatest" list will suffer from personal preferences, but I agree with Jason's opinion. There's no need to include an album that wouldn't even make your top 8 list. I would go on to say that if you plan to list more than about 3 to 5 albums from a single artist on your "greatest albums" list, then you're probably compling the wrong list. If you're going to wave your favorite artist's flag that hard, then you should just limit your list to a specific genre, or time period, or simply the best albums by that artist.

It would make more sense to rank the "Top 100 Rock Albums from the 70s" or "Top 100 Hip Hop/Rap albums from the 90s", which is what you try to do on this channel. I couldn't agree more! 'On The Beach' is an incredible album. Arguments over whether or not it's better than 'After The Gold Rush' are immaterial, when you suggest that 'On The Beach' has "no good songs" 🤯 It's not that the album is suddenly back in vogue, it's more that it not being widely available until it was reissued on CD in 2003 meant that people had forgotten just what a superb album it is and it's finally getting its long overdue reappraisal. I like the TLM guys, but I find it hard to get my head around Jason slating 'On The Beach', yet he thinks that Graham Nash (very good, but easily the least talented songwriter of the four) produced the best CSNY solo album, while he also like the interminably dull Counting Crows 😬

    @@TastesLikeMusic His 70s output so incredibly strong and that long run of great albums almost unprecedented, especially when you include his first two albums from the 60s. With that in mind, I don't have a big issue with you saying On The Beach is his worst 70s album. However, I clearly don't hear American Stars 'n Bars (4 stars) as good as On The Beach (5 stars). On The Beach probably speaks to me that much because some of the tracks (in particular the entire side 2) are among his saddest and at the same time most beautiful songs. That's also the reason why Tonight's The Night is my favorite Neil album, because it's even sadder. And yes, After The Goldrush is at number 3, but only slightly ahead of the next one.

I sometimes find it hard to decide which one of 'On The Beach', 'After The Gold Rush', 'Zuma', 'Rust Never Sleeps', 'Harvest', 'Tonight's The Night' or 'Times Fades Away' is his best 70s album, but O.T.B. is easily better than 'Comes A Time' and 'American Stars and Bars' (both of which are very good - a clear sign of just how incredible his late 60s/early 70s run was).

    Amazing Grace is a kind of a live album. She wanted to do a gospel album, but wanted to get the feeling of a church with a gospel choir. So they decided to record it live in a church over a few days to give it that feel. But it was not recorded to be a concert album. There is a critically acclaimed documentary about it produced a few years back which may be why it's inclusion on this Paste list. All in all it is an absolute wonderful passionate album.... But, I still would not consider it one of the best 300 albums of all time, and as you pointed out not even her best of 1972

    Many of the placements on this list are totally wack but I do agree that I like the variety and the representation of some different things even if they aren't necessarily things I would pick. It's still a mess but I am going with Paste as the best even if I can't get over the fact that they put that Britney Spears album in there. I remember thinking that wasn't even a good album and obvious hits + filler collection when it came out, there's no way 25 years later that it sounds like anything but that. There does seem to be a lot of over-correction with this list as far as putting past agreed upon classics fairly low on the list. That aspect is annoyingly transparent. Even with my complaints this list is still my favourite of the three. 😂

    Aretha's Amazing Grace is a live gospel album. It is a stunning album. Surprised you both dismissed it so easily. You don't need to be a gospel aficionado to love it. The shows were filmed, but not released for decades due to a syncing issue that they were recently able to fix, it is worth watching. It is amazing how artists fall in and out of fashion. Everyone has their artist they can't believe gets snubbed. For me it is Elvis Costello. For a lot of his career he was the critics darling, but somehow he has fallen out of favor and I am not completely sure why. Too much of a catalogue making him seemingly unapproachable? Not having that singular album that can be added to a list with no discussion. Or maybe he hasn't gone dormant for long enough for people to miss him? He will be missed and hopefully appreciated when he is sadly gone.
