Cake Albums Ranked From Worst to Best

Today we're ranking the 6 studio albums from Sacramento's oddball alternative rock band, Cake.
****
Cake is an American rock band from Sacramento, California, consisting of singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, guitarist Xan McCurdy, bassist Daniel McCallum, and drummer Todd Roper. The band has been noted for McCrea's sarcastic lyrics and deadpan vocals, and their wide-ranging musical influences, including norteño, country music, mariachi, disco, rock, funk, folk music, and hip hop.
Cake was formed in August of 1991 by McCrea, DiFiore, Greg Brown (guitar), Frank French (drums), and Shon Meckfessel (bass) who soon left and was replaced by Gabe Nelson. Following the self-release of its debut album, Motorcade of Generosity, the band was signed to Capricorn Records in 1995 and released its first single, "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle", which hit number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks music chart and was featured on MTV's 120 Minutes; French and Nelson then left the band, and were replaced by Todd Roper and Victor Damiani. Cake's second album, 1996's Fashion Nugget, went platinum on the strength of its lead single, "The Distance". Following a tour of Europe and the United States, both Brown and Damiani announced they were leaving Cake, which led to speculation about the band's future; McCrea eventually recruited Xan McCurdy to take over on guitar, and persuaded Nelson to return.
Prolonging the Magic, the band's third album, was released in 1998 and went platinum, having shipped over one million units; this was followed three years later by Comfort Eagle, the band's first album on Columbia Records, featuring the single "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" which hit number 7 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Following a series of tours, including several versions of the Unlimited Sunshine Tour, the band released Pressure Chief in 2004, its second and last album on Columbia. After creating its own label, Upbeat Records, the band released Showroom of Compassion in 2011, which became its first album to debut at the top of the Billboard charts, selling 44,000 copies in the first week after release. Their studio output has been minimal since 2011, although they have continued to tour and have occasionally hinted at an upcoming album.

Fun fact, the bandname "Cake" doesn't refer to the baked sugary confectionery but rather the word used to describe when something accumulates somewhere you don't necessarily want it to, like when mud cakes on your boots and you have to scrape it off.

I'm really glad Cake finally won, I'd been wanting to dive into them more. Really easy discography to get through and listen to. I agree that Fashion Nugget is an easy #1 though, was blown away. 6) Showroom of Compassion - 3 5) Motorcade of Generosity - 3.5 4) Pressure Chief - 3.5 3) Prolonging the Magic - 4 2) Comfort Eagle - 4 1) Fashion Nugget - 4.5

I was a huge Cake fan back in the day. My list is pretty close to Jason's list. Motorcade sometimes goes ahead of Fashion Nugget for me, mostly because of Jolene. Prolonging sometimes hits 2 for me. I have two funny Cake stories... 1) Orpheum Theater, Boston (Oct 7, 2004): The Red Sox were in the playoffs and the fever was mad. At one point, during the show people started chanting Red Sox! Red Sox! Red Sox! to which McCrea replied, "Cake does not support your sports teams." The crowd booed heavily for a little bit. The bass player at the time sheepishly pointed to his Red Sox hat when McCrae wasn't looking. That seemed to appease the crowd. 2) Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, Hampton, NH (2006) - Cake took the stage and before playing anything McCrae told the story of getting ready for the show and overhearing two waitresses in the bathroom kibbitzing. One of them mockingly said, "Oh... I wonder which song they are gonna play last? The Distance?" Obviously, alluding to them being a one-hit wonder. So, McCrae then said, "So, we are going to play The Distance now. If that's all you came here to hear you are free to go when it's done." Of course, no one left. All Cake fans know, at least at that time, that they always closed with Jolene. McCrae is great and doesn't give a rat's ass, but his snarky ambivalence can sometimes tank a show. On the other hand, like in New Hampshire, it can raise a show up to a higher level.

Huge band for me in high school and I finally revisited some of their stuff last year to see how it still held up. Their discography sits comfortably among three tiers for me: Comfort Eagle and Fashion Nugget - "These albums defined my youth", Prolonging the Magic and Motorcade of Generosity - "Solid, but could've used a couple more great tracks," and the last two - "I just don't care anymore. The juice is gone."

I just don't care enough about Cake to justify taking time away from the 1994 deep dive and Prince. Between those two, I've got around 250 albums to get through.

It's got a 52/100 on Metacritic, and usually ends up at #5 or #6 on people's rankings. It starts out slow with the first 4 songs, but from Dime up through Tougher Than it Is, I think it's absolute gold.

Turns out they have a lot of catchy as fuck songs. * A very quirky band, almost a novelty act, but they have chops. The deadpan vocal style does sound suited for novelty music, but the vocals actually have a lot more to offer than that. * The lyrics tend to take a sardonic look at life and especially relationships. * They make excessive use of the vibraslap, which became a calling card by the end of it. But they also make use of a wide array of other percussion elements, a wide array of keyboard sounds, and other instruments like pedal steel. They combine an eclectic mix of styles and run it all through the Cake filter. * They have effectively Cake-ified many great cover songs, and it's definitely worth hearing the B-sides and Rarities collection because of that. * They can get really groovy, funky and danceable. They remind me of Soul Coughing in that way and especially in the vocals. * They are a highly consistent band, and every album has a standout banger, usually a smash single. * Their final album maintains their usual high standards, but I do feel it is a step towards ordinary. * Cheers mates!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Joe, would you mind qualifying your statement: “I’m not the alternative guy” (paraphrasing) I could be wrong, but I remember you liking quite a few bands that have been called “alternative” Is it just the label that gives you pause? In the 90s that was such a catch-all blanket term for numerous genres so maybe I have a different understanding of it than you do. There was a lot of bad mainstream pop/rock/R&B music infiltrating the airwaves back then, so I was happy to have any alternative to that!

If you removed 99% of the creativity, fun, and energy from They Might Be Giants’ music, you’d end up with a band like Cake. Granted, I think a couple of tracks like “The Distance” and “Never There” are solid enough to put on a 90s alt-rock compilation, but that’s where my enjoyment of this band begins and ends. I’d honestly take a band like Collective Soul or Third Eye Blind over Cake. Perhaps even Matchbox Twenty (“Long Day” is catchier than anything I’ve heard from the cakey boys.)
